Woods hit two free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining, lifting Portland over the Miami Heat 94-93 Wednesday night. The Blazers came back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, outscoring the Heat 29-14 in the final 9:11.
“Those were probably the toughest shots I have ever had to make,” said Woods, who scored 11 points off the bench, including 7-of-10 shooting from the foul line.
With Miami leading 93-92, Jeff McInnis missed a jumper for the Blazers, but Woods got the rebound and put up a shot. He was fouled and made both free throws.
“We just did a horrible job in the last minute and a half,” Miami’s Lamar Odom said.
Portland was without Bonzi Wells, who sat out the first game of his two-game suspension. Wells also was stripped of his title as team co-captain Tuesday after cursing at coach Maurice Cheeks during a 105-98 loss to Dallas on Monday.
Portland improved to 6-1 at home. The Blazers have won their last two games by a total of three points.
Wade, the Heat’s first-round draft pick out of Marquette, had 18 points in the first half. He shot 9-of-16 from the field overall and 6-of-9 from the line.
Miami was 4-of-12 on 3-pointers, and 8-of-20 in the fourth quarter.
“Our zone defense qualified for hero status for the game,” Cheeks said. “If it weren’t for the zone we wouldn’t have won that game.”
The Heat took their biggest lead, 79-65, when Caron Butler hit a shot with 9:50 left in the fourth. McInnis made a layup to start the rally and Damon Stoudamire hit two 3s to cut it to 86-82 with 3:11 to go.
Woods made two free throws to pull the Blazers to 91-90 with 54.2 seconds left. Odom put up an airball on a 3-pointer and Wallace hit a turnaround 10-footer with 23.8 seconds remaining, giving Portland the lead.
Wade drove into the lane and scored to give Miami back the lead, 93-92, with 9.9 seconds to play.
Jones hit back-to-back 3-pointers and a 20-footer to give Miami a 73-61 lead with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter.
Portland led by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, but Miami took the lead just before halftime.
Odom had 13 points and nine rebounds.
Vladimir Stepania had 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench for Portland.
Before the game, Miami activated forward Samaki Walker from the injured list and placed Jerome Beasley (lower back strain) on the injured list . … The Heat are 4-12 all-time at Portland. … The Blazers activated forward Ruben Patterson from the injured list Tuesday.
