The Atlanta Hawks will not be in the playoffs. But Shareef Abdur-Rahim still believes they can close the season on a strong note.
They’ll look to continue doing so when they host the Memphis Grizzlies.
Atlanta snapped a three-game losing streak on Thursday with a 91-89 win over the Washington Wizards. Abdur-Rahim scored a team-high 24 points and hit a desperation heave at the buzzer to give the Hawks the win.
While he knew most of the crowd showed up for Michael Jordan’s last appearance in Atlanta, Abdur-Rahim was glad the Hawks could also put on a show.
“It was a nice win for us in light of everything that’s gone on,” Abdur-Rahim said. “We wanted to give a good showing, show that we have pride and we’re a good team, too.”
The Grizzlies also aren’t headed to the postseason.
Memphis has lost six straight, including Friday’s crushing 102-101 defeat against the Los Angeles Lakers in which it blew a 23-point fourth-quarter lead.
“We were playing the best game of the season by far,” Memphis forward Pau Gasol said. “Everyone was giving their heart until the fourth quarter. Then everyone relaxed, and the Lakers went on a four- to five-minute run eating away at our lead.”
Grizzlies forward Mike Miller’s back spasms limited his playing time again. Miller left the game with 7:40 left in the first period and didn’t return.
