NEW ORLEANS (TICKER) —The Milwaukee Bucks try to remain in eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race when they visit the fifth-place New Orleans Hornets on Friday in the opener of a home-and-home series.

The Bucks moved one-half game ahead of idle Washington for the final playoff berth in the East with a 104-85 win at New Jersey on Wednesday.

Gary Payton scored 23 points and Sam Cassell added 22 for the Bucks, who began the fourth quarter on a 15-2 run. Rookie Marcus Haislip had six points during the burst.

The Bucks host the Hornets at the Bradley Center on Saturday.

The teams split their first two meetings this season, with the Bucks winning here on January 27, 108-93.

New Orleans is one-half game ahead of Boston for fifth place in the East.

On Wednesday, the Hornets defeated New York here, 101-96. Jamal Mashburn scored 25 points and Baron Davis 23 for New Orleans, which grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and outscored the Knicks in the paint, 42-24.
