The Nets acquired Alston, combo guard Courtney Lee and veteran big man Tony Battie from the Magic in exchange for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson in a draft-day trade Thursday. Advice: The Nets have their point guard of the future in Devin Harris, so Alston will have to get accustomed to coming off the bench - something he hasn't done regularly since his 2003-04 season with Miami. While the Nets say they like what Alston brings to the club, they were largely motivated by his $5.25 million contract that ends after the upcoming season. Overall, this trade gives New Jersey about $18 million of salary cap relief going into the 2010-11 offseason. |

G Rafer Alston, G Courtney Lee and F Tony Battie were traded from the Magic to the Nets in exchange for G Vince Carter and F Ryan Anderson. "The trade we made (Thursday) provides our franchise with numerous options in the long-term development of our team," said Nets president Rod Thorn. "We believe that in Courtney Lee, we have acquired a young, dynamic player who will be a very good player in this league for a number of years. Rafer Alston has proven to be a quality player in this league for a number of years, and Tony Battie will provide a strong veteran presence off the bench." |

The Nets acquired Alston from the Magic on Thursday as part of a three-player package for Vince Carter, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports. Recommendation: Alston, who started for the Magic after being acquired in a midseason swap with the Rockets, will join the Nets and likely assume the role as Devin Harris's backup. There's a possibility Nets coach Lawrence Frank will play both guards at together at times, but this definitely knocks Alston's fantasy value down a notch or two. |
