Updated NBA mock draft: Take 3

1. Chicago Bulls – Derrick Rose, PG, 19, 6-3, 190 pounds (Memphis freshman): Chicago appeases the locals by taking the player that fits the culture and direction of its organization. He also brings an incredible amount of talent to the table.

2. Miami Heat – Michael Beasley, PF, 19, 6-9, 235 pounds (Kansas State freshman): No hesitation here. The Heat are happy to take the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year honors.

3. Minnesota Timberwolves – O.J. Mayo, PG/SG, 20, 6-5, 195 pounds (USC freshman): Mayo adds talent to a backcourt that had high expectations but has little very little thus far. This may not be his first choice, but they call it a draft for a reason.

4. Seattle SuperSonics– Jerryd Bayless, PG/SG, 19, 6-3, 199 pounds (Arizona freshman): Bayless isn’t ready to play the point full time, but he’s the best value at this pick and suits the Sonics’ needs better than anyone else.

5. Memphis Grizzlies – Kevin Love, PF/C, 19, 6-9, 255 pounds (UCLA freshman): This may be a reach, but Memphis likes Love and needs to take a frontcourt player at all costs.

6. New York Knicks – Eric Gordon, SG, 19, 6-3, 215 pounds (Indiana freshman): New York needs a lot of everything and can’t afford to be picky about positions at this point. Gordon fits Mike D’Antoni’s offense and might be the best athlete in the draft.

7. Los Angeles Clippers – Russell Westbrook, PG/SG, 19, 6-3, 187 pounds (UCLA sophomore): The Clippers need to upgrade their backcourt in a major way, so taking the local kid here makes sense, especially with an eye on the future.

8. Milwaukee Bucks – Joe Alexander, 21, 6-8, 230 pounds (West Virginia junior): The Bucks have a big need at small forward and will want to take a player with great athleticism and upside and a high intensity level.

9. Charlotte Bobcats – Brook Lopez, C, 20, 7-0, 260 pounds (Stanford sophomore): Lopez slips in a major way and the Bobcats will be ecstatic to get a player as big and polished as Lopez. He’ll also take pressure off Emeka Okafor.

10. New Jersey Nets – Danilo Gallinari, SF, 19, 6-9, 209 pounds (Armani Jeans Milano, international): Gallinari is the best player available here, and may be one of the biggest steals in the draft at this point.

11. Indiana Pacers – D.J. Augustin, PG, 20 , 5-11, 175 pounds (Texas sophomore): The Pacers feel fortunate to secure the best player available at their biggest position of need – while also filling their necessity of drafting a player with strong character.

12. Sacramento Kings – Anthony Randolph, SF/PF, 18, 6-11, 220 pounds (LSU freshman): Geoff Petrie knows his team is lacking athleticism in a major way, and will be very happy to scoop up Randolph after he falls a few spots lower than he probably hoped.

13. Portland Trail Blazers – JaVale McGee, C, 20, 7-0, 237 pounds (Nevada sophomore): The Blazers could be too intrigued by McGee’s all-around talent to let him slip any further, even if it will take him considerable time to develop. They also could very well trade this pick.

14. Golden State Warriors – Donte Greene, SF/PF, 20, 6-10, 220 pounds (Syracuse freshman): Golden State isn’t married to any of their forwards for the long-term, and Donte Greene would be an excellent fit for Don Nelson’s offense.

15. Phoenix Suns (from Atlanta) – Robin Lopez, PF/C, 20, 7-0, 255 pounds (Stanford sophomore): The Suns were in love with Joakim Noah last year and Lopez is the closest fit to that this season. He will bring them major energy off the bench and some much-needed size.

16. Philadelphia 76ers – Kosta Koufos, C, 19, 7-1, 245 pounds (Ohio State freshman): The Sixers need to upgrade their frontline and Koufos would complement the team’s existing personnel.

17. Toronto Raptors – Brandon Rush, SG/SF, 22, 6-7, 211 pounds (Kansas junior): Bryan Colangelo fills his two biggest needs by picking up an outstanding perimeter shooter who just happens to be one of the best defenders you’ll find on the board.

18. Washington Wizards – Darrell Arthur, PF, 20, 6-9, 215 pounds (Kansas sophomore): The Wizards are in a position to draft the best player available and will like the athleticism and skill-level that Arthur brings to the table.

19. Cleveland Cavaliers – DeAndre Jordan, C, 19 , 7-0, 260 pounds (Texas A&M freshman): At this point in the draft Jordan’s upside and physical tools outweigh the many question marks about his skill level.

20. Denver Nuggets – Nicolas Batum, SF, 19, 6-8, 214 pounds (Le Mans Sarthe Basket, international): The Nuggets are in a position to draft the best player available and will like the defensive ability, passing skills and all-around talent Batum brings to the table.

21. New Jersey Nets (from Dallas) – Marreese Speights, PF/C, 20, 6-10, 245 pounds (Florida sophomore): The Nets need size after taking a SF with their first pick, and are yearning for an athlete who can play both frontcourt positions.

22. Orlando Magic – Courtney Lee, SG/SF, 22, 6-5, 200 pounds (Western Kentucky senior): The Magic have been looking for a quality SG for some time now, and Lee is a high character, extremely versatile defender who can space the floor for Dwight Howard.

23. Utah Jazz – Alexis Ajinca, C, 20, 7-1, 225 pounds (Hyeres-Toulon, international): The Jazz feel like they are missing an athletic player in their front court and could afford to develop Ajinca on their D-League team until he’s ready to play

24. Seattle SuperSonics (from Phoenix) – Serge Ibaka, PF, 6-10, 230 pounds (L’Hospitalet, international): Sam Presti can afford to swing for the fences with his second first round pick and hope that Ibaka can achieve his incredible upside down the road.

25. Houston Rockets – Douglas-Roberts, SG/SF, 21, 6-7, 200 pounds (Memphis junior): The Rockets are looking at slashing wing players who are tough and can defend, and CDR surely fits the bill.

26. San Antonio Spurs – Roy Hibbert, C, 21, 7-2, 272 pounds (Georgetown senior): After losing Tiago Splitter to Spain, the Spurs could use a good young big man to add to their aging rotation. Hibbert has the type of character and pedigree that the Spurs covet.

27. New Orleans Hornets – Mario Chalmers, PG, 22, 6-1, 190 pounds (Kansas junior): The Hornets don’t have a true backup point guard and Chalmers suits their style of basketball. He can defend, shoot and is excellent in transition.

28. Memphis Grizzlies (from L.A. Lakers) – Nathan Jawai, C, 21, 6-10, 282 pounds (Cairns Taipans international): Memphis needs all the size it can get, and Jawai has plenty of that, as well as some nice upside.

29. Detroit Pistons – DeVon Hardin, C, 21, 6-11, 250 pounds (California senior): The Pistons get a tough, defensive-oriented athletic backup center to add to their stable of promising young players.

30. Boston Celtics – J.J. Hickson, PF, 19, 6-9, 242 pounds (N.C. State freshman): The Celtics shouldn’t be too concerned with positional factors this late in the first round, and could go with an athletic freshman who could develop into a steal in a few years.
