Suns eye Blanks for GM job

Cleveland Cavaliers executive Lance Blanks has emerged as a frontrunner for the Phoenix Suns’ general manager’s job and will interview with franchise officials on Friday, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

After Dell Demps and Jeff Weltman passed on the Suns job, owner Robert Sarver and new president Lon Babby have turned toward Blanks, a well-regarded assistant GM.

Weltman, the Milwaukee Bucks assistant GM, became the top candidate for the job after Demps, a former Spurs vice president, chose the New Orleans Hornets over the Suns, but Weltman has decided to stay with Milwaukee, sources said.

A big part of the apprehension about the Suns GM job among potential candidates is how little authority there will be under a new president and a hands-on owner. Cleveland GM Chris Grant has a close relationship with Blanks and strongly values him as his top aide. Both Grant and Blanks moved up a spot with the departure of former GM Danny Ferry.

Blanks was a first-round pick of the Detroit Pistons in 1990, and eventually moved into scouting and front-office positions with the Spurs in 2000. He joined the Cavaliers with Ferry as an assistant GM in 2005.
