Four reasons the Celtics should sign Dwight Howard this offseason: Fan’s take
When the Boston Celtics started the 2010 NBA season, they surely must have seen the writing on the wall. The entire NBA universe was talking about the Miami Heat and their acquisitions of LeBron James(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes). Boston did not seem to be worried. After all, they had their own threesome in Kevin Garnett(notes), Paul Pierce(notes) and Ray Allen(notes). As a longtime Boston Celtics fan, I felt rather comfortable with the team. In the end, both fans and the team alike found out that they were a horse or two short in their battle against the Heat. With a power-packed free agent market looming, Dwight Howard(notes) has been the name on Boston Celtic fan's lips. Here are four good reasons why:
Dwight Howard would help Allen, Peirce and Garnett age slower
The Celtics big three are getting older and even though they are fighting off Father Time rather well, they are soon going to show it. All three guys are capable of going stretches where they look like themselves from years past. Unfortunately, that is not something we Celtic fans can expect for long stretches of time without some help. Rajon Rondo(notes) fills this purpose well from the wing and Dwight Howard would provide the same thing under the hoop.
Dwight Howard would drastically improve the inside game
Garnett can still absolutely dominate the boards at times, but Howard can do it all the time. If you put these two guys under the basket together along with athletic guys like Pierce and Rondo dashing in from the outside, the Celtics should get every single rebound. No team would be any better under the glass.
Dwight Howard would ensure a great future for the franchise
Howard is in his prime and along with Rajon Rondo, it would give the Celtics a solid nucleus of talent to work with in the future. If you have that inside/outside combo, then you can be competitive and build around it. With the way things are going in Boston, all three of the "Big Three" could be gone in the blink of an eye. Having Dwight Howard and Rondo signed up to long term contracts could help out a ton.
Signing Dwight Howard sends the right message to the Big Three
Dwight Howard is a blockbuster acquisition to be sure. If Allen, Garnett and Pierce see him brought in, they are much more likely to hang around and finish out their contracts. It also sends the right message to us fans. Nobody wants to go back to the lean years again. Without Dwight Howard in the fold, we are a couple of retirement announcements away from that very thing. Rajon Rondo can not do it alone.
