Most 3-point field goals in an NBA playoff game by player
These are the players who have made the most three-point field goals in an NBA playoff game. One of the players has actually accomplished the feat twice, and during this post-season in 2011, he was one three-pointer short of accomplishing the feat a third time. Another player tied the NBA record for three-pointers in the 2011 post-season.
One of the players on the list averaged 26.0 points per game in 27 playoff games playing for my favorite NBA team, the New Jersey Nets. But he tied the all-time record for most three-point field goals in a playoff game while playing for another team.
Jason Kidd(notes) also played for my Nets for a number of years, but he does not make this list. He did make six three-pointers in his first playoff game this 2011 post-season though, which is his career high.
Most Three-Point Field Goals in NBA Playoff Game by Player
On May 8, 2011, Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks made nine out of 10 three-point attempts in a playoff game vs the Los Angeles Lakers. Terry had a fantastic game, as he made 11 out of 14 shots from the field, and one of two free throws. He scored a game high 32 points, as the Mavericks shockingly swept the defending champion Lakers right out of the playoffs, and coach Phil Jackson into likely retirement, with a resounding 122 -86 win.
Peja Stojakovic(notes) also made six out of six three-point attempts in the game for the Mavericks. The Mavs shot lights out from three-point land, making 20 out 32 attempts. Hard to beat anybody when they shoot like that.
Ray Allen has made nine three-point shots in a playoff game twice in his career. The first time he accomplished the feat was on June 1, 2001, while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks vs the Philadelphia 76ers. In that game, Allen made nine out of the 13 three-point shots he took. He scored 41 points in the game, and led the Bucks to a 110-100 win. Allen Iverson(notes) scored 46 points in the game for the 76ers.
The second time Ray Allen made nine three-point shots in an NBA playoff game was on April 30, 2009. Playing for the Boston Celtics, Allen made nine out of 18 three-point shots vs the Chicago Bulls. He scored 51 points in the game, his career playoff high, but the Bulls won the game 128-127 in triple OT.
That was a crazy playoff series that went seven games, four of which went into a total of seven OT periods. The Celtics won the series, but lost to Dwight Howard(notes) and the Orlando Magic in the next round. The 18 three-point attempts by Allen is the most in NBA playoff history for one game.
Ray Allen is, hands down, the all-time best three-point shooter in NBA playoff history. Twice he made nine three-pointers, twice he made eight three-pointers and three times each he made seven and six three-pointers in playoff games.
On May 11, 2001, Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors made nine three-point shots in a playoff game vs the Philadelphia 76ers. Carter took 13 three-point shots in the game. He scored 50 points in the game, a career playoff high for him.
In the first half of the game, Carter made eight three-point shots, which is the NBA playoff record for most three-pointers in a half. Carter scored 34 of his 50 points in the first half, 19 of them in the second quarter. The Raptors blew out the 76ers in the game, 102-78, but lost the series in seven games.
In the next series that year the 76ers played in vs the Milwaukee Bucks, Ray Allen also dropped in nine three-pointers in a game vs them (see above).
T-1. Rex Chapman - 9
On April 25, 1997, Rex Chapman of the Phoenix Suns set the NBA record for most three-point field goals made in a playoff game by making nine three-pointers vs the Seattle Supersonics. Chapman made nine out of the 17 three-point shots he took in the game. The 17 three-point shots was the NBA record for most three-point shots in a playoff game until Ray Allen broke it in 2009.
Chapman scored 42 points in the game, and the Suns defeated the Supersonics by a score of 106-101. But the Supersonics would win that series.
So far in the 2011 post-season, Ray Allen made eight three-pointers vs the New York Knicks on April 22. In the same game another Celtics player, Paul Pierce(notes), made six three-pointers. Pierce has also made eight three-pointers in a playoff game (in 2002).
In addition to Jason Kidd, Paul Pierce and Peja Stojakovic, mentioned above, Mario Chalmers(notes) of the Miami Heat also made six three-pointers this post-season, accomplishing the feat on April 27 vs the 76ers.
If anybody is wondering, the most three-point field goals LeBron James(notes) has made in a playoff game is seven. The most three-pointers Kobe Bryant(notes) (three times), Michael Jordan (twice) and Dwyane Wade(notes) have made in a playoff game is six.
