Can Jeremy Lin Lead New York Knicks to a NBA Championship in 2012? Fan’s View

Is there any New York Knicks fan out there who thought the team would win five straight games with an undrafted free agent point guard from Harvard named Jeremy Lin leading the way? What Jeremy Lin has accomplished over the last five games with the Knicks has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Jeremy Lin Has Led Knicks to Five Straight Wins

Jeremy Lin has been so good over the last five games, he's averaged 26.8 points, 8.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, that Knicks fans might as well start dreaming. Can Jeremy Lin lead the New York Knicks to a NBA Championship in 2012?

I'm a New Jersey Nets fan in the NBA, but root for the New York Knicks because Carmelo Anthony is my favorite NBA player. So I watch the New York Knicks games.

Back on February 1, 2012, I wrote an article calling for the Knicks to play Jeremy Lin at point guard. In the article I pointed out that Jeremy Lin had played well at Harvard in college, and in the NBA D-League, where had a triple-double on January 20, 2012. I also pointed that Jeremy Lin was averaging 22.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 12.0 assists, and 2.3 steals per game per 36 minutes played for the Knicks through February 1, 2012.

I closed the article by saying that Jeremy Lin could turn out to be a player in the NBA. So I was a supporter of the Knicks playing Jeremy Lin a full two games before the current win streak began, but even I had no idea he could play the way he's played in leading the New York Knicks to five straight wins. The five straight wins have moved the Knicks record to 13-15, and put them clearly in the running for the playoffs.

Knicks Have Won Five Straight Playing Mostly Without Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony

Jeremy Lin has led the Knicks to five straight wins without the Knicks two best players, Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, playing in most of those games. Melo has a strained groin, and Amare's brother died in a car accident. A lot of people have wondered if having Stoudemire and Anthony back will be a good thing for the Knicks.

Jeremy Lin Has Made All His Teammates Better

Over the last five games, Jeremy Lin's play has lifted the play of almost all the other players on the Knicks. Steve Novak went from scoring 41 total points on the season, to scoring 62 points over the last four games. Rookie Iman Shumpert went from making 37.2% of his shots, to making 20 of 40 (50%) shots over the last three games.

If Jeremy Lin Gets Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire to Play Better Knicks Can Win NBA Championship in 2012

If Jeremy Lin can also lift the games of Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks two best scorers on the season, how good are the New York Knicks going to be? If Jeremy Lin can keep playing like he has over the last five games, and he can keep helping all of his teammates to play better, why can't the New York Knicks compete for the NBA Championship in 2012?

Knicks should be happy with making the playoff this season. don't get jaded and put way too much pressure on the young Lin. If he meshes with the other 2 stars, things will get better.

Jeremy Lin is certainly an intriguing story and seems to have broken out of the NBA circle into everyday watercooler conversations. Can Jeremy Lin win an NBA title? Certainly not on his own. But as people are pointing out, when Stoudemire and Anthony are back on the floor you've just added a pretty good player to an already decent team. The Knicks are in a tough division with both Boston and Philadelphia to contend with, but if Lin keeps playing to his potential and the Knicks get healthy, anything could happen.

There are no great teams in the league this year. In the playoffs this team has as good a shot as any of the top teams. No team will want to face them come playoff time.

I think it will take one year for the chemistry to jell enough for an NBA championship. The 2004-2007 Phoenix Suns with D'Anotni didn't have as much talent as they have now but came very close to winning it all. The system works. Go Knicks.

Im a Life long Knick fan and New Yorker myself, and I like what Lin's doing at point. But all this needs to be tuned way down. Having a kid come in and play 5 good games is one thing. To start mentioning him in with elite players is way too soon. Equally ridiculous is the notion to trade Carmelo if he can't fit in with Lin. Or to even think that having Jared Jefferies and Bill Walker on the court is better than having Stat and Melo. Things will work because Lin is competent at point, and that has been the problem all along. Carmelo was asked to do things he can't do, and he was hurt most of the time. Either a lot of this "controversy" is something made up by the media, or it's a lot of people who don't undertsand basketball. I can't believe that Knick fans who have any knowledge of the sport could have such short memory and say such stupid things- Go Knicks

Carmelo is not considered a top player, at least not in the same league as Lebron James or Dwayne Wade.
That's why he is not scrutinized as much ...

Basically, Carmelo peaked early. He peaked when he won the NCAA title.

It is all about Carmelo's ego and how D'Antoni deals with the lineup. If he allows Lin to be point, have him run the offense, and let him dish the ball to Stat and Melo, they have a shot to make a run. If he lets Melo control the offense, they are back where they were prior to these 5 games (nowhere). Melo has to buy into this philosophy and D'Antoni has to force him into it. Melo must be an unselfish player in this new system, which he has never shown to be before.

A lineup of Lin, Fields, Melo, Stat, and Chandler is very exciting if they can play together with Lin running the point. The bench will be strong as well.

Please be a TEAM player for once MELO!!!!

This may be the biggest stretch I have heard in quite some time. First off lets think about this 5 straight victories, not bad but only two came against playoff teams right now, the lakers was a nice win at home but that came the night after the lakers at a battle against the celtics and squeaked out a victory, and then beat a 13-9 utah jazz team at home. They also beat 3 under .500 teams in washington, new jersey, and minnesota. Yes the timberwolves are much improved but still under .500 AND the knicks should have never one that game. So after 5 games people are talking nba championship? yeah its a cute story and I am sure Lin will be a good player for quite some time but lets get real as soon as carmelo and amare come back the team will not be any better neither one of those guys plays defense so its taking time away from the shumperts and novaks of the world. Lins scoring will decrease drastically and it would be a strech to say the Knicks even get out of the first round in a pretty top heavy eastern conference.

So many people are overlooking the defense. The defensive side of this team has stepped it up. They are averaging 91.2 points against in this streak. He indeed, is making the team a better TEAM on both sides of the court.

Fact of the matter is, Carmelo is not a winner in the NBA. Although not a Lebon fan, it is funny to me that while Carmelo is often touted as the NBA's most talented scorer, he hardly gets criticized for his lack of success in the playoffs and "imma get mine" attitude while the rest of the NBA's top talents, especially Lebon and Dwight, get their games dissected and poked at daily.
In my opinion, it is ignorant to believe that the Knicks have been on a 5 game winning streak DESPITE Stoudemire and Anthony being out, but instead to accept the possibility that the Knicks are actually a better TEAM without all the star power. Stoudemire could certainly compliment Lin nicely as he does not constantly need the ball in his hands and running through him in order to make a strong impact on a game, but if you have watched the Knicks for the last year, it is as if everyone, led by Carmelo, is always trying to go one on one and make a spectacular individual play for the Garden crowd. With Lin in the lineup, you can tell that every single player on that team loves the kid, loves playing with him, and has risen their level of play to match his. Just by looking at the excitement on Jeffries, Fields, etc when playing with Lin as opposed to playing with Carmelo, it is clear to see that the Knicks will NEVER contend for a title if they continue with the atmosphere and style of play that they have built around Carmelo Anthony since his arrival in New York.

Not sure about championships, but definitely see NY as one of the contenders after Chicago and Miami if they keep this up!
