Could Michael Kidd Gilchrist Be the Next Derrick Rose?
Kidd-Gilchrist posted 13 points and 13 rebounds against the Gators and is averaging 12.6 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game on a loaded Kentucky Wildcats squad, that many think may be able to win it all here when March Madness commences next month.
His best game came against then #4 ranked Louisville, when he scored a season high 24 points on 7 of 16 shooting. He has scored in double figures in 18 of the Wildcats' 25 games, which is impressive for a freshman that has to share the ball with the likes of Anthony Davis, Doron Lamb, and Terrence Jones, all of whom average double figures and are expected to be high draft picks in their own right.
NBADraft.net currently has Kidd-Gilchrist ranked #7 in their Mock Draft. The truth is, he could go even higher than that if he continues his strong play against ranked opponents and takes advantage of the stage that is presented to players in March, when they can dramatically improve their draft prospects by competing against the best teams in the country.
Kidd-Gilchrist is 3" taller than Derrick Rose, and NBADraft.net compares him more to Gerald Wallace. They note he's been in the top of his class ranks since his freshman season of high school and that he has a strong work ethic. Moreover, his versatility should enable him to play three positions at the NBA level, as he has the footspeed to stick with point guards and the size and strength to cover swingmen.
I think a more accurate comparisoin would be the Sacramento Kings' Tyreke Evans. Evans is also 6'6" and a three position player, and he put up 20-5-5 as a rookie, becoming only the fourth in NBA history to do so.
Could Kidd-Gilchrist be the fifth? It's not out of the question.
