The “We Believe” Warriors Charity Game - It’s Happening! a Fan’s Reaction
In my last article, I wrote about the excitement that's been buzzing around the Bay Area because of a possible charity basketball game between members of the 2007 "We Believe" Warriors, and the current squad.
Well it appears that the game has officially been confirmed. And let me tell you, this Warrior fan hasn't been this excited about something having to do with the NBA since the Mavericks took down LeBron and company in the NBA Finals earlier this year (a W's fan always has to root for the upset, right?)
So CSN Bay Area's Matt Steinmetz announced that the contest between the two teams will indeed be taking place at the San Jose State University Event Center, however it's on November 5th instead of the previously thought date of October 29th. He also managed to get his hands on the rosters.
The "We Believe" team will include Matt Barnes(notes) (who first broke this idea to the world with this amazing tweet back on October 12th), Jason Richardson(notes), Gilbert Arenas(notes), Antwan Jamison, Al Harrington(notes), CJ Watson(notes) and Ike Diogu(notes). They'll be taking on Monta Ellis(notes), Stephen Curry(notes), David Lee(notes), Dorell Wright(notes), Jeremy Lin(notes), Charlie Bell(notes), Lou Amundson and rookie Jeremy Tyler(notes).
Should be an awesome game right? Well I don't mean to nag, but where are Baron Davis(notes) and Stephen Jackson(notes)? Can you have a game with a group of players calling themselves the "We Believe" Warriors if it doesn't include the Bearded One or Captain Jack? I'm pretty sure that's not allowed.
Steinmetz is reporting that neither will be a part of the exhibition, which although very unfortunate, is the way that professional sports works sometimes (especially assuming that all the players are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and not for any pay - it is for charity).
It's okay though. I'll let it slide as long as they promise to play this video, or something close to it, a few times on the big screen during the game. Is it a clip of Baron Davis dunking on Adrei Kirilenko? Of course it is!
I wondered which team Monta Ellis would play for, and it seems that question has been answered. But where's Andris Biedrins(notes)? Would he go for the current squad or the We Believers? I'm sure both teams could really use his two points and two rebounds.
So that leaves just two burning questions. Number one - who would win the game? (Without Baron and Jackson, I have to go with the current Warriors). And number two - what is Antwan Jamison doing on the team? (Gilbert Arenas I understand, at least he's funny… or crazy. Whatever). But Antwan? Well he did go for 51 points in back-to-back games about ten years ago, so why not, let the guy play.
Regardless of who suits up and who doesn't, more than anything, it will just be nice to see some NBA players in action. Here's hoping that there will be more where that came from soon.
