Kings Team Report

GETTING INSIDE

The buzz that surrounded the Kings continued to build last week.

Overtime losses to Cleveland and the Lakers qualified as moral victories for a team that had the league’s worst record last season, and their defeat of Denver on Monday kept the good vibes going.

In downing the Nuggets, the Kings had defeated a team with a winning record for just the fourth time this season (they have 14 wins). Then came Tuesday, when the contract extension of team basketball president Geoff Petrie was announced and all involved proclaimed that the rebuilding effort was in full effect.

Until Wednesday’s buzzkill.

While their loss to lowly Philadelphia was only one game, it came with bigger-picture implications that the Kings will have to deal with. For starters, they were without starting point guard Tyreke Evans(notes) for the second straight game and may be without him for the next two as he recovers from a right ankle sprain.

This, of course, comes after they’ve spent most of the season without shooting guard Kevin Martin(notes) and reserve swingman Francisco Garcia(notes). The Kings have lost eight of their last 13 games and may be on their way to more in the ‘L’ column, as their next three opponents (the Lakers, Dallas and Phoenix) have a combined record of 68-27.

76ers 116, Kings 106:   The Sixers came back from a 13-point, second-quarter deficit to down the Kings at Arco Arena on Wednesday. They did it largely because of their long-range game, as Philadelphia hit 9-of-16 from beyond the arc. The 56.2 percent clip was well above their season-long total of 33.9.

NOTES, QUOTES

• While the Kings matched their home win total from last season Monday against Denver (11), they finished their homestand just 1-3 and play at the Lakers on Saturday.

• The Kings have scored 100 or more points in each of the last 11 home games. Overall, they are ranked fifth in the league in scoring (104 points per game).

• The Kings’ defense has fallen off recently, as they have allowed an average of 111.5 points in the last four games. They are ranked 27th in points allowed per game (105.2).

Quote To Note:   “I’m not saying we were overconfident, but we were not sharp. And when you’re not sharp against a team as talented as Philadelphia, and you let them hang around a little bit too long, and then they get on a roll, you lose.”—Kings coach Paul Westphal, on his team’s loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday.

ROSTER REPORT

Rotation:   Starters—Point guard Beno Udrih(notes), Shooting guard Donte’ Greene, Small forward Omri Casspi(notes), Power forward Jason Thompson(notes), Center Spencer Hawes(notes). Bench—Forward Andres Nocioni(notes), Guard Ime Udoka(notes), Forward Kenny Thomas(notes), Guard Sergio Rodriguez(notes), Forward Jon Brockman(notes).

Player Notes:

• F Jason Thompson recorded his 11th double-double of the season (15 points, 11 rebounds), but it was the rare case in which that didn’t result in a win. The Kings are now 9-2 when Thompson has a double-double.

• F Donte’ Greene tallied 17 points against Philadelphia Wednesday in what was his 17th start of the season. He has scored double-figures in his last three games.

• G Beno Udrih shot just 3-of-11 from the field against Philadelphia and appears to struggle more with Tyreke Evans out of the lineup. Udrih, who is shooting a career-high 52.1 percent, is now 18 of 46 in the three games in which Evans hasn’t played.

Medical Watch:

• G/F Francisco Garcia (right wrist fracture) is out at least until mid-February after his exercise ball accident on Oct. 9. The fifth-year player was bench pressing with 90-pound dumbbells in each arm when the ball exploded and the weights caused the injury that required surgery.

• G Kevin Martin remains out after having surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his left wrist on Nov. 9. He had a CT scan Wednesday and returns to the doctor on Jan. 12, with his return coming thereafter at an undetermined date.

• G Tyreke Evans has missed the last two games with a lingering right ankle injury. Evans is questionable for Saturday’s game at the Lakers.

first of all, they signed k-mart to a multimillion dollar deal not too long ago. so you really think they will put their rookie first over their franchise player? give me a break! that is like saying take kobe out of the game cuz he scores too much and does not pass the ball, or lebron as well. k-mart is one of the premier shooters in this league, and it's just unfortunate no one really knows what he is capable of due to injuries the past 2 years.
i have kmart on my team and i am anxious for his return. my only concern w/him however is his size. 175 lbs at 6-7 is really really skinny.

Once again, if the Kings made their free throws they may have one in regulation. Needless to say, Evans is a potential all-star somewhere in the future, but not yet. Coach Westphal insists th 1-4 flat offense is the way to go with the game on the line. However, opponents know what is coming and plug up the key. The Kings have some good outside shooters that are open when Tyreke tries to dribble down the middle and loses the ball. Westphal is a good coach, but come on, 1 0n 1 against Kobe (who I can't stand but admit he is one of a kind) the best defensive player in the league. Pass the ball Tyreke............

Kevin is not selfish. He, like D Wade had no reliable people to pass the ball to in the past. When Garcia started becoming somewhat consistent last year, Kevin shared the ball with him more. Kevin is a pure scorer. That's what they pay him for & he does it well.

    A) Did someone really say "cancer the team up?" How do you cancer a team up? Is it possible to cancer a team down? Here's some advice. Read a book, learn some new words, and quit pretending you know what you're talking about. No one who says "cancer a team up" should be allowed to give their opinion...

    B) Kevin Martin isn't selfish. Allen Iverson is selfish. There is no comparison between the two players. Super K will be back and make this team better.

    C) Kenyon Martin is K-Mart. Kevin Martin is Super-K. I love it!

Oliver...how can you say that Martin is selfish. First off, he is one of the best players in the NBA at moving without the ball and he was becoming a better passer before the injury. You, like a lot of other people, also forget that Martin led the Kings in scoring when Artest and Bibby were still here and those two both averaged more shots/game than Martin. Martin only had the ball so much last season because they had no one better. Tyreke was struggling early this year. Now that Tyreke has picked up his game, Martin will come back and help the team by doing what he does best.

For you fantasy goons... Kevin Martin is a decent guy to have on your team... however, if you're the Sacramento Kings... you'd just prefer him stay OUT. Kevin is a selfish player.. it's always ME FIRST with him...

and it's not a coincidence the KINGS started WINNING and playing with passion after Martin blew his wrist out....

Coach isnt going to allow him to come back and cancer the team up like he always has...

    hey kevin, pass the ball.

or better yet... just watch a Kings game... and watch Tyreke Evans.

man you guyz talk up a storm so here we go and ya aint really saying anything......

i know most of u watch football and u prolly know bout the raiders being Sacramento fans, some ov u prolly actually live in California, that being said i think dishing K-mart would be the worst mistake in Kings recent history its like the Raiders giving up garcia, i mean he aint doin much but the "star" that they put all their money is a bust (Jamarcus Russel and at an earlier time Robert Gallery) im not comparing Tyrekes production to J-Russel im jus saying THINK ABOUT IT: K-Mart leaves Kings get some old ass veteran who (if its a center esp) has to be injury prone moreso than K-mart and a draft pick which could be gud but also could bust y not just throw garcia on the bench and green too than toss K-mart and Evans out ther its a win win......
ya got k-mart drawing the defense and kicking it out to nocioni or getting to the stripe PLUS a yungster like Evans can watch more FIRSTHAND from the best onehanded, falling away from the hoop and still getting the and one PLUS making the FREE shot, in the game (i know dats not a sentence idc)
case and point-the Raiders dished Garcia and now their stuck with the premodonna who dont know when to do what......... with no back-up becuz the guy that was doing work is now INJURED.......... so lets recap..... IF Udrih gets hurt than ya got a star PF who prolly cant dribble like JT and no back-up PG becuz ur waiting for the draft while ur team, which the Kings definitely CAN make at least the first round the way thing are goin, sits around getting the shyt kicked out ov em and than the snowball effect takes hold of the team and turns us around

bottom line: K-Mart will ALWAYS be an essential part of the NEW YOUNGER FASTER KINGS. and as far as his defense goes, i gotta say hes got some pretty gud plays in his hall of fame, yet still needs to work on it....... he aint doug christie-some ppl are born with defensive qualities about them and they know its there they jus gotta figure out how to use it when and ov course gotta strengthen it and it shows no matter what the profession others have to learn it from square one........

Coach Westphal, I suggest you teach those youngsters how to shoot free throws. The last two games may have been won or at least a lot closer if the free throws would have gone in.

In my humble opinion, you "trade Martin" guys should give a little more thought to how nice it would be to have a bunch of threes in the net and force some of those individuals guarding Evans to back off. Right now Evans holds the ball much too long and is double or triple teamed. Evans sometimes tries to dribble through those double teams and loses the ball. The defense will not be able to drop their guys in order to double or triple Evans. That will create much more room for Evans to go to the basket. There is no doubt that K-Mart is the best shooter on the team and draws a lot of fouls. Between Evans and K-Mart they should be at the foul line all night long. Also the bench will be greatly better........So just hold those "trade Martin" thoughts and lets see what happens when Martin returns.

@RiseAbove: If you actually listened to his interviews it would review that he is one of the most humble players in the NBA. Compare that to LBJ and KOBE. LBJ says that no one should wear the number 23 just becuase he aint gonna wear it. How@#$%y is that?

kevin Martin is so weak, i cant believe so many people like this guy. I mean ya he can put up 30 a night, but the team isn't gona win many games cuz he couldn't gaurd my grandma. Do u see how that guy drives to the hoop, falling back one handers, are u F*%$ing kidding me. Go up strong n put the ball in the hole. I was so disgusted watching martin, trying to show everyone its his team, he had the ball in his hand way to much when he was playing, get this guy out of town, He thinks hes so cool, jus listen to him do interviews, no kmart ur not Jordan, and kobe and lebron n wade Play Defense, so if u wana be an all star its starts with defense bro, WE DONT NEED U IF UR NOT WILLING TO PLAY DEFENSE OR BE A TEAM PLAYER, N YES WE R BETTER WITHOUT KMART, ITS A FACT.

I won't say that Martin doesn't play defense. But Dude isn't a defensive stopper, and probably never will be. Part of the reason that Jason Thompson was fouling out of games is because K-Mart could not or would not stay in front of his man. Now that Tyreke is at the 2, Beno playing better "D" at the PG, there are a lot less guards just getting to the rim and getting the "AND ONE". With JT NOT in foul trouble, he has concentrated on guarding HIS man and getting offensive and defensive rebounds. He HAS done that like an allstar. He is turning into an automatic double double every night! When his outside jumper is going he is unguard-able! Too fast for nearly ALL power Forwards, and too BIG for most small forwards. He is having a breakout year! Maybe "Most Improved"? Not having to constantly come over and try to stop K-Mart's assignment from dunking the ball has helped JT look a lot better.

Are we a better team without K-MART? I say NO WAY !! The Kid is a great scorer and has the ability to score 30+ every game. He is an unstoppable force on the offensive end. He is clutch and he is efficient. No player takes less shots to make more points than K-Mart! And he's at the line so often that he scores half his total points at the line. All great scorers get to the charity stripe on a regular basis. Refs have given Martin the green light to drive and shoot for the "AND ONE", and he is the MASTER at the running one hander while being fouled. But his defense leaves a lot to be desired. K-Mart needs to go to a team that can afford to allow the other team's 2 guard to penetrate all the time. I think the Kings should move K-Mart to a contender in exchange for a good young C/PF that has all star potential at least, and a first round Draft Pick (which would be low from a contender). With Evans playing the way he plays, K-Mart's defensive liabilities are not necessary anymore. If we play good D, pass the ball around to make the other team's D work harder, and find the open jump shooter or post player that has the best shot! Westphal has installed an offense that is best suited for this team of young, fast players who can all shoot the ball out to the 3 pt line!

As for Garcia, I hope the Kings keep him, because he is a locker room guy that really is good to have on a team. His outside shooting is lethal when he is on. And he plays pretty decent defense. You can use Garcia at the 1 or the 2. He can be a primary ball handler and execute the offense. What a luxury when he gets back! Hawes is SLOWLY improving. He needs to let the 3 pt shot go for a while and move the ball looking for a better shot. If he was hitting them, that would be different, but he isn't so ... Udoka is a great utility guy that can play 1, 2, or 3! He has a very good jumper with range and can also mix it up under the basket for rebounds. The Kings have consistently out-rebounded their opponents in nearly every game. Consequently the Kings have been IN every game with a shot in the 4th to turn the tide and win. That is all you can as for as a coach, to be close going in to the 4th qtr, on the road, and have a chance to win the game. PW has coached very well getting the team into situations where they have a chance at the end. PW is much better than I thought he would be. With a lot of the same players from last year, PW is getting more effort, more hustle, more ball movement, and more scores. This has added up to MORE WINS! They went into UTAH and beat the Jazz in their HOUSE! Rare indeed. Then they imposed their will on Houston in the 4th to squeeze out a victory! Very encouraging signs! This team is young and will make young mistakes that will cost them games. But if the ROTY keeps playing lights out Point Guard, and the rest of the team is kept involved and motivated, the Kings are gonna win their fair share of games. What is the total? WHO KNOWS! I just want them to exceed 17 wins this year and then in the summer of 2010, they will have ~ 12 Million for 1 or 2 free agents. And they will have their own draft picks that we are stockpiling. The way Petrie is picking talent these days (Tyreke may turn out to be the best player in this draft!) we need all the draft picks we can get! So trade Martin to get a Very Good Center (like a David Lee as an example, or a Fesenko) , the Kings can make a push for an 8th seed and make some teams very nervous with the explosive style of play they have on display! 'Reke is unguard-able, and is getting double teamed as a rookie 8 games in. Jason Thompson is showing his skills in his SECOND year. Most players need 3, but NOT THOMPSON!!! Beno looks like the comeback player of the year if he can keep it up.The one spot we have some trouble at is Center, and trading Martin would solve that problem either in the draft or as an established player coming back in return.

I personally am excited about the youth and determination I see the Young Kings exhibiting on a nightly basis! There have been no games where there was any QUIT in them. Even when Atlanta came in and walloped the Kings, there wasn't a lack of effort, just a lack of execution and skills. Wait till this team has played together for 20-30 games and see how well they play together!! Even Better offensively and defensively?? That is EXCITING !! Other than the Atlanta game the Kings have played very, very well. I am so Jazzed about the potential of Tyreke Evans! He may be the Super Star we have all been waiting for!! Kid has all the Tools and no one (even Chris Paul) can stay in front of the KID! And he has a natural KNACK for making great decisions on the fly! He may be our "E" ticket out of the mediocre basketball they have played the last 3-4 years!!! Tyreke Evans is absolutely the "REAL DEAL !!" GO KINGS !!!! Go 'REKE, ROTY is in your future!

P.S. Those Myopic voters on the East Coast better have their TV's on late or recording and watching this kid, because he is PHENOMENAL !! He is playing like a 3rd year player just breaking out !! This KID is SPECIAL! He is the one who can take us to the Promise LAND! And he is SO young! Thank you Geoff Petrie for drafting the Kings PLAYER of the Decade!! GO KINGS !!!
