Kings Team Report
GETTING INSIDE
The Kings entered Wednesday’s game with the fifth-easiest schedule to that point in the NBA based on their opponents’ records. And it’s about to get much harder.
While eight of their next 10 games are at home, they come against eight teams with a combined record of 135-85 (.614). That includes Thursday’s game against Cleveland, two games each against the Lakers and Denver and matchups with Philadelphia, Phoenix, Dallas and Orlando.
Both games against Denver are at home. The Kings play the Lakers once at home and once in Los Angeles The Kings also play the Warriors in Oakland.
After that, it’s a six-game trip for the Kings, who are 3-11 away from Arco Arena.
So, Kings coach Paul Westphal was asked before his team’s 35-point comeback in Chicago on Monday, is his team ready?
“We’ll find out,” said Westphal, who has referred to this stretch of the schedule as “murderer’s row.” “I know these guys will give everything they have. But beyond that, what I’ve seen of the Lakers, I don’t see how they lose anyplace to anybody. And these other teams, we haven’t seen them yet. I don’t know how we’ll matchup. I know we’ll try hard. That’s all I can say for sure.”
Cavaliers 117, Kings 104 (OT): After LeBron James(notes) and Tyreke Evans(notes) wowed the crowd with a better-than-expected duel, Cavaliers’ Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes) became the unlikely hero. The Cleveland center hit three straight three-pointers in overtime.
NOTES, QUOTES
• In being outscored 13-0 against Cleveland on Wednesday, the Kings became the first team to go scoreless in overtime since Vancouver against Indiana on Dec. 1, 2000. Only one team pitched as big a shutout in overtime, as the Portland Trail Blazers did it during the 1982-83 season against Houston 17-0.
• The Kings have lost eight straight games to Cleveland.
• The Kings fell to 10-4 at Arco Arena this season with their loss to Cleveland on Wednesday. They will try again Saturday to match last season’s home-win total of 11.
Quote To Note: “There was a misunderstanding. Coach called for a four flat and Spencer (Hawes) came out to set a pick, and I told him I didn’t need a pick, so I came up anyway and it messed the whole play up.”—Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans, on the final play of regulation against Cleveland in which his jumper didn’t beat the clock and the game went to overtime.
ROSTER REPORT
Rotation: Starters—Point guard Tyreke Evans, Shooting guard Donte’ Greene, Small forward Omri Casspi(notes), Power forward Jason Thompson(notes), Center Spencer Hawes(notes). Bench—Guard Beno Udrih(notes), Forward Andres Nocioni(notes), Guard Ime Udoka(notes), Forward Kenny Thomas(notes), Guard Sergio Rodriguez(notes), Forward Jon Brockman(notes).
Player Notes:
• G Tyreke Evans had his share of highlight moments against LeBron James Wednesday. But his finish couldn’t compare to James’, as Evans missed eight of his last nine shots and wound up hitting just 11-of-25 overall. James had 34 points, 10 assists and 16 rebounds.
• F Omri Casspi continued to prove to the league that he has serious shooting range. The rookie hit three of six three-pointers against Cleveland. He is ranked seventh in the league, shooting 46.3 percent from beyond the arc.
• C Spencer Hawes has had most of his worst games against the league’s biggest bigs. Whether it was Portland’s Greg Oden(notes) or the biggest of all in Cleveland’s Shaquille O’Neal(notes), he typically wilted under their immense pressure and presence. But the third-year center had his best game of the season against the Cavaliers, finishing with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Medical Watch:
• G/F Francisco Garcia(notes) (right wrist fracture) is out at least until mid-February after his exercise ball accident on Oct. 9. The fifth-year player was bench pressing with 90-pound dumbbells in each arm when the ball exploded and the weights caused the injury that required surgery.
• G Kevin Martin(notes) is out at least eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his left wrist on Nov. 9. According to The Sacramento Bee, he has a CT scan on Dec. 30 and may return in early January.

B) Kevin Martin isn't selfish. Allen Iverson is selfish. There is no comparison between the two players. Super K will be back and make this team better.
C) Kenyon Martin is K-Mart. Kevin Martin is Super-K. I love it!

Are we a better team without K-MART? I say NO WAY !! The Kid is a great scorer and has the ability to score 30+ every game. He is an unstoppable force on the offensive end. He is clutch and he is efficient. No player takes less shots to make more points than K-Mart! And he's at the line so often that he scores half his total points at the line. All great scorers get to the charity stripe on a regular basis. Refs have given Martin the green light to drive and shoot for the "AND ONE", and he is the MASTER at the running one hander while being fouled. But his defense leaves a lot to be desired. K-Mart needs to go to a team that can afford to allow the other team's 2 guard to penetrate all the time. I think the Kings should move K-Mart to a contender in exchange for a good young C/PF that has all star potential at least, and a first round Draft Pick (which would be low from a contender). With Evans playing the way he plays, K-Mart's defensive liabilities are not necessary anymore. If we play good D, pass the ball around to make the other team's D work harder, and find the open jump shooter or post player that has the best shot! Westphal has installed an offense that is best suited for this team of young, fast players who can all shoot the ball out to the 3 pt line!
As for Garcia, I hope the Kings keep him, because he is a locker room guy that really is good to have on a team. His outside shooting is lethal when he is on. And he plays pretty decent defense. You can use Garcia at the 1 or the 2. He can be a primary ball handler and execute the offense. What a luxury when he gets back! Hawes is SLOWLY improving. He needs to let the 3 pt shot go for a while and move the ball looking for a better shot. If he was hitting them, that would be different, but he isn't so ... Udoka is a great utility guy that can play 1, 2, or 3! He has a very good jumper with range and can also mix it up under the basket for rebounds. The Kings have consistently out-rebounded their opponents in nearly every game. Consequently the Kings have been IN every game with a shot in the 4th to turn the tide and win. That is all you can as for as a coach, to be close going in to the 4th qtr, on the road, and have a chance to win the game. PW has coached very well getting the team into situations where they have a chance at the end. PW is much better than I thought he would be. With a lot of the same players from last year, PW is getting more effort, more hustle, more ball movement, and more scores. This has added up to MORE WINS! They went into UTAH and beat the Jazz in their HOUSE! Rare indeed. Then they imposed their will on Houston in the 4th to squeeze out a victory! Very encouraging signs! This team is young and will make young mistakes that will cost them games. But if the ROTY keeps playing lights out Point Guard, and the rest of the team is kept involved and motivated, the Kings are gonna win their fair share of games. What is the total? WHO KNOWS! I just want them to exceed 17 wins this year and then in the summer of 2010, they will have ~ 12 Million for 1 or 2 free agents. And they will have their own draft picks that we are stockpiling. The way Petrie is picking talent these days (Tyreke may turn out to be the best player in this draft!) we need all the draft picks we can get! So trade Martin to get a Very Good Center (like a David Lee as an example, or a Fesenko) , the Kings can make a push for an 8th seed and make some teams very nervous with the explosive style of play they have on display! 'Reke is unguard-able, and is getting double teamed as a rookie 8 games in. Jason Thompson is showing his skills in his SECOND year. Most players need 3, but NOT THOMPSON!!! Beno looks like the comeback player of the year if he can keep it up.The one spot we have some trouble at is Center, and trading Martin would solve that problem either in the draft or as an established player coming back in return.
I personally am excited about the youth and determination I see the Young Kings exhibiting on a nightly basis! There have been no games where there was any QUIT in them. Even when Atlanta came in and walloped the Kings, there wasn't a lack of effort, just a lack of execution and skills. Wait till this team has played together for 20-30 games and see how well they play together!! Even Better offensively and defensively?? That is EXCITING !! Other than the Atlanta game the Kings have played very, very well. I am so Jazzed about the potential of Tyreke Evans! He may be the Super Star we have all been waiting for!! Kid has all the Tools and no one (even Chris Paul) can stay in front of the KID! And he has a natural KNACK for making great decisions on the fly! He may be our "E" ticket out of the mediocre basketball they have played the last 3-4 years!!! Tyreke Evans is absolutely the "REAL DEAL !!" GO KINGS !!!! Go 'REKE, ROTY is in your future!
P.S. Those Myopic voters on the East Coast better have their TV's on late or recording and watching this kid, because he is PHENOMENAL !! He is playing like a 3rd year player just breaking out !! This KID is SPECIAL! He is the one who can take us to the Promise LAND! And he is SO young! Thank you Geoff Petrie for drafting the Kings PLAYER of the Decade!! GO KINGS !!!

I'd like to see the Kings put the best 5 defensive players on the court and see how they can do for a whole game playing strickly defence. Pistons won a few championships that way.
