Lakers Team Report
GETTING INSIDE
The Lakers will head into 2010 staggering a little bit, but certainly standing high as defending NBA champions.
It might’ve been different if the Lakers hadn’t escaped Sacramento in double overtime on Saturday night and then rallied from 15 points behind against Golden State on Tuesday night.
The Lakers lost the other two games they played in their stretch of four games in five days to close 2009: versus Cleveland on Christmas and at Phoenix on Monday night.
“I already told them they have to get better,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said immediately after the victory over Golden State.
The Lakers got some poor play over the last stretch from veterans Derek Fisher(notes) and Lamar Odom(notes). Ron Artest(notes) was out the final three games with a concussion—revealing lack of depth at small forward with Luke Walton(notes) out and Adam Morrison(notes) not ready for prime time.
Center Andrew Bynum(notes) is still struggling also after looking like a surefire All-Star while Pau Gasol(notes) was out with a hamstring strain. Through it all, the Lakers are 25-6, although that includes 17-3 record at home.
Lakers 124, Warriors 118: Kobe Bryant(notes) (44 points) and Pau Gasol (27) had season-high points to carry the Lakers. Bryant also had 11 assists, and Gasol had 12 rebounds and three blocks.
NOTES, QUOTES
• Kobe Bryant was cited as “amazing” by Golden State coach Don Nelson after scoring 44 points and making all 16 foul shots Tuesday night despite a fractured finger. Bryant has won the past two Western Conference Player of the Week honors.
• Does the Lakers’ defense miss Ron Artest? One night after losing to Phoenix, the Lakers gave up 55.4 percent shooting from the field to Golden State without Artest again. Phil Jackson said it hasn’t been Artest’s individual defense as much as simple chemistry.
Quote To Note: “To me, basketball is basketball.”—Lamar Odom, on dabbling recently at small forward while Ron Artest has been out.
ROSTER REPORT
Rotation: Starters—Point guard Derek Fisher, Shooting guard Kobe Bryant, Small forward Ron Artest, Power forward Pau Gasol, Center Andrew Bynum. Bench—Forward Lamar Odom, Guard Jordan Farmar(notes), Guard Shannon Brown(notes), Guard Sasha Vujacic(notes), Forward Josh Powell(notes), Forward Adam Morrison, Center DJ Mbenga(notes).
Player Notes:
• F Ron Artest met with reporters Tuesday night for the first time since his Christmas night fall and subsequent concussion, saying he was carrying Christmas presents into his house when he fell onto concrete.
• F Adam Morrison did not play a minute Tuesday night against Golden State even though Ron Artest was out, an indication that Phil Jackson did not want to use Morrison and his shaky defense against the high-powered Warriors.
• G Jordan Farmar got to finish the game Tuesday night and actually played more minutes than starter Derek Fisher, which was a surprise.
Medical Watch:
• F Ron Artest (concussion) might return to action Friday night but is still having some dizziness.
• G Kobe Bryant (avulsion fracture in right index finger) is playing with a splint on his finger.
• F Luke Walton (pinched nerve in back) is out at least until early January.
