Allen Iverson: Not Pleased With Bench Role

  • Print

Update: Iverson reiterated his unhappiness with his bench role after Wednesday’s loss to the Warriors, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

Recommendation: Coach Lionel Hollins must have anticipated this, as he said before the game that Iverson would remain the team’s third guard behind Mike Conley(notes) and O.J. Mayo(notes). Iverson outscored both of the younger players 18 to eight and 14 respectively, so it’s hard to imagine Iverson not starting at some point. But he would probably land back on the bench if/when the team goes into rebuilding mode.

Ricky posted a comment saying A.I. should just shut his mouth and play. That Iverson isn't starting is unreal Ricky! A 6"0" guard who has completely made his mark on the game in many ways. Leading the league in scoring numerous times, individual awards, and several all-star selections. Give him the respect he earned. I fondly remember him crossing over Michael Jordan, and leaving him reaching for air. Possibly the fastest crossover people had ever seen, in his NBA career. There is alot of A.I. haters though, maybe Ricky's just one of them. Before you think somebody shouldn't be in the starting lineup, Look at Allen "The Answer" Iverson's stats.

If he would shut his mouth and just play, but NOO.......!!!!!, AI is all bout I, as in himself. What a goof,I can not even think that he was promised a starting job, period, right out of the gate.Mayo can score,Conley not as good scoring but a better playmaker ,AI,I think was brought in to help with these 2 guys and get 25 at most 28 min.a game.I mean if he looks at the problem here he can see he is going to get at least the 25 to 28 a game spelling the 2 guards. And as a 6th man well hell the World could be his LOL.

How is it that AI thinks he's so crucial to the starting line up of any team?!
How many teams has he led to the finals?
He doesn't seem to enhance any teams chances with his play. All he does is match the other team
shot for shot, all by himself, whether he makes 'em or not; never mind the other four players on his team.
Sit down and accept your new role!

People wanna be politcally correct when they know that AI is one of the greatest to suit up. Let the veteran play and cut this development nonsense out. When the team starts winning then the players will truly develop.

No one should be surprised about this. It was pretty easy to predict how this thing would turn out. There is a reason why few NBA teams were knocking at his door during the off-season's free agent market. I can understand why they decided to sign him (probably to put people in the seats) but in my opinion he was never a good fit for this team. The bottom line is that the Grizzlies have a lot of good young talent (ie: Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, O. J. Mayo, etc.) on the roster and are clearly a team of the future. Thus, it is important that fans show some patience and continue to support them. Unfortunately, you can't go from where they have been the past several years (since Hubie left as coach) to a playoff contender over night. You have to develop the young talent that you have and it is going to take some time. But there is "a light at the end of the tunnel". Mayo, Gay, and Gasol are the cornerstones of this franchise and with the veteran Zach Randolph providing some low post offense and rebounding the Grizzlies can match most teams position by position. Once these guys get use to playing with one another (kind of like the Hawks did) they are going to be a team to watch in the future. The smart thing to do is keep the core group together and try to add pieces that fit (like the Hawks did with adding Bibby) and that can provide some stability to this young team. The Grizzlies just added the wrong piece to the puzzle (though I believe Zach was a good addition).

Ya they need 5 guys with shoot 1st attitudes instead of 4 and one distributor. The fact of the matter is AI would probably get more offensive opportunities coming off the bench when the demarre carroll's of the world are in because memphis could let him dominate the ball. If he was doing his AI domination thing with randolph, gasol, mayo and gay in it would just be a waste of personnel.

Start A.I. Start winning games while waiting for your younger players to develop. I say bench Mayo and start A.I. at the no.2 spot.

Someody in that management needs to tell theirselves that with Iverson starting there will be more wins. Hollins is acting immature and unintellectually, This stubborness will not make players better. Starting Iverson teaches conley how to become a better player. Hollins stating that people are being hard on conley shows his stubborness. Start Iverson and make your team look good.

He should start over Conley, for now. Conley should be the sixth man off the bench.
