Yao Ming targeting next season for return to NBA

  • Print

SHANGHAI (AP)—Houston Rockets center Yao Ming(notes) hopes to return to the NBA next season as he continues to recover from surgery on his left foot.

“I’m definitely recovering and the recent results of my checkups allowed me to make this long trip back to Shanghai from the U.S.,” Yao said on Friday.

He was in Shanghai to help launch a public service announcement about protecting sharks by the San Francisco-based conservation group WildAid.

Houston lost its 7-foot-6 center for this season when he had surgery in May to repair a hairline fracture in his left foot. Yao has said he wants to allow enough time for his bones to fully heal.

“I might be completely recovered by next season,” he said.

He has been a spokesman for WildAid since 2006.

    Rockets fan for life here.

Hopefully we get Yao back next year, get rid of Tmacs contract and sign a great free agent to go with Ariza, Yao, Scola, and Brooks.
If Yao is healthy, we might beat the Lakers last year. we still took them to 7 games. Im still bitter over the refs showing favoritism to the Lakers, by allowing Kobe to throw elbows, and When Artest gets in his face, he gets thrown out of a playoff game. what a joke. Oh, and Derek Fisher did an open field tackle on Scola, and opnly got suspended one game. he should have been gone the whole series for intentionally trying to hurt a player. LAkers suck, get help from the NBA (17 of 21 home games this year) and are crybabies. Go Rockets

    TOP 5 GREATEST CENTERS EVER

    5. Shaq
    4. Olajuwon
    3. Wilt
    2. Russell
    1. Kareem

Frankly, if Walton were able to stay healthy, he'd have been 5. Shaq was a dominant force, but his game is limited.

    Holla!

Post #66. You are an idiot if you think the Rockets are better off without him. They should get rid of TMac, the guy is a jinx. Without Tmac playing last year, we advanced to round two of the playoff series. Don't take me wrong, TMac is good player. It's just that the guy is a f$@ken bad luck. Oh btw, Sieu@#$% whatever your name is. Do all of us a favor, learn how to spell correctly before you post. Maybe you should go back to wherever you came from and stay there! We don't need another dumb sh$t posting stupid comments in here.

There are at least 5 centers that are head and shoulders above Houstons 7'6 center. Amare, Gasol, Duncan, Howard, and on his good nights even a worn Shaq makes a good argument. Although these stars are obviously superior I believe Houston should keep him: A. Big men are hard to come by B. currently they are starting the shortest center in the league. C. Houston can take pride in knowing that there are only a handfull of players better than theirs WHILE HE'S ON CRUTCHES. LOL !!! Yao and the Rox do more with less year after year. We're over 500 with a midget center. We beat the Lakers with a Umpa Lumpa, 3 unknowns, and a guy best known for standing really close to Kobe last year.

There's only 1 real team in the NBA.....The Golden State Warriors.
And the best big man is still Nate Thurmond...even at 112 years old Nate the Great rocks.
Now take them other little kids out for their cookies and milk.
    Go Warriors!!!!!!

While true that Yao will never be like Olajuwon or Shaq, he is still the best center in the NBA....yes, i said best center in the NBA. Look at the head to head comparison with Howard. Yao OWNS him!!..end of story!!

To Ron L,shaq was the focus on those lakers teams that won 3 rings dude not kobe. Shaq was the most dominant player in the nba in that time period. People were afraid of him and not kobe bryant. I'll give you that he was old and over the hill when he went to Miami and played with Dwayne wade, but not Kobe. Kobe was the secondary star and not the first option on offense in LA. The ball almost always went in to Shaq first and he posted up,scored or passed it out for a open shot. That's a main part of the reason why they could play together because Kobe felt he was playing in Shaq's shadow in LA.

To Jordan W’s comment “Shaq has four rings and was a leader for every run”.
This really shows how much you know basketball. Shaq had Kobe in LA and Wade in Miami. That’s why he won four rings. Without these two superstars on his team, he would not have won anything. If Yao had a Kobe or a Wade, he too would have won four rings. And if you are comparing McGrady to Kobe or Wade, I say there is no comparison.

I agree with Jordan W. Yao Ming is overrated. Houston aquired him and McGrady with the hope of delivering a championship to houston. Several Seasons later they finally advance to the 2nd round after constantly being elimated in the 1st round when they did make the playoffs, only to lose to the lakers. Also he has not played a full season since the 2003-2004 season. Since that time each season has been plagued with injuries. The only reason Houston keeps him around is because he generates so much money from china for the franchise. He'll never be a great center like Hakeem or even o'neal. He's just a decent player and if it was not for the fact that he has the entire country of China behind him with there huge pockets, the franchise would have traded him long ago.

The Good Thing Is He'll Be Healthy Next Year,The Better Thing Is The Rockets Will Be Able To Get Rid Of Him For A Much Higher Price.

Can we get some common sense please? Like you said Jordan, they took the Lakers to game 7... with a sorry excuse for a player in Ron Artest, who I might add played like crap the whole series....you talk like Shaq was the focus in LA.... ummm... how about Kobe was?!?!? Though I cant stand the Lakers... its a team sport. Shaq won in Miami...... because of Dwayne Wade. The problem isnt with the players we have because with everyone healthy we win.... flat out can run things. You have your top two players out and you still run your mouth about losers??? They fought to the end and werent supposed to even make it past game 4. Lakers will not win this year... they were lucky Boston was plagued too or they would have faced another sweep~

People who still saying yao is overated, and hating on him and all this other crap, dont know one @#$% about NBA ball.

He's a big man. Bigs get injured alot easier than small guys. Look at Walton, Shaq had some injuries, Greg oden is plagued. Big men just fall alot harder. Thing with Yao, he gets up and keeps going, 110%. Yao is probably by far the most team oriented player that you will find. He ain't gonna go out there and dunk it on everyone.

And you post the nate robinson dunk, but how many people have nate dunked on?

What about this one you forgot to post. Yao on Lebron... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF3VQ-PZ4AA

and what aboutt his swat on Lebron in the same game?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9kvqP095oI

Anyways..go back into yourw hole jordan w, cause you obviously dont know crap about ball if you calling yao overated.

why do we have people like jordan w? im pretty sure the topic is about yao ming and not about the kobe rape thingg. last time i check yao ming has been a top 10 fantasy player when hes healthy and playing. this is a simple concept to understand. dwight howard has been getting less touches this year due to vince carter, rashard lewis and a getting health jameer nelson when he comes back. dwight howard cant finish easy baskets in the paint other than dunks, but the point im making is that teams they can foul dwight howard as many times as they wish and hopefully he miss about half of his fre throws. apparently this does not apply to yao ming who shoots at 85 percent from the free throw line and has better all around offensive game than dwight howard. that being said dwight is rank lower than yao is because of points and free throw percentage. nothing more nothing less... stan vangundy offense option 1) vince carter 2)rashard lewis 3)jameer nelson 4) dwight howard dont agree with me look at last years stats and compare it to this years stats.

p.s yao ming will always be a top 10 fantasy player if hes healthy.

jordan w. last time i check rockets took lakers to game 7 and 3 of those games was without yao...and who said they couldnt win with a yao and ron artest less.

If Yao and Tmac were ever healthy they could have rivaled what kobe and shaq did. Maybe better cause kobe's a ball hog and shaq can't shoot.

What-ifs and fantasy league ratings, are you guys serious? He can't jump or run, his reaction time is horrid and more important he can't win. Oh well, glad to hear all your reactions, I will be thinking about you all and smiling every time I watch the Rockets next season. Even better when Yao comes back and sucks worse than ever. I think the Yao/Rockets fans have oficially taken over the Kings fans for the most excuses.

    @jordan w

did you watch the lakers/rockets series last year?! the rockets were beating them pretty handily until yao ming went down. the lakers arent the champs last year if yao stays healthy...

yao ming was DOMINATING in the playoffs before he got hurt. portland got killed by him in game 1, then proceeded to double and triple team him every play the rest of the series, and the rockets won.

i am not saying dwight howard sucks, by any stretch. all i am saying is that dwight howard gets dominated when he plays yao. howard is better on the defensive end that yao (although he cannot guard yao at all) and yao is 10X better than howard on the offensive side. yao will be back and yao will get a ring, and they you can eat some crow.
