No more ‘silliness’: Wizards end more serious camp

  • Print

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—A year ago, Flip Saunders was an unemployed coach whose idea of a holiday was to spend a week watching Eddie Jordan run the Washington Wizards training camp.

He noticed rifts between younger and older players and lots of clowning. He didn’t like it.

Now in charge of the Wizards, Saunders has just completed his first camp with Washington, one with a more serious tone.

“Our younger guys have matured,” Saunders said. “I haven’t seen that silliness.”

The Wizards are done at Virginia Commonwealth University after seven days of practices capped by Tuesday night’s preseason win over Memphis. Gilbert Arenas(notes) seemed to emerge just fine, dishing out 10 assists in 24 minutes against the Grizzlies in his latest comeback from knee surgery.

“It starts with Gil taking a more serious approach and it trickles down,” center Brendan Haywood(notes) said. “A team is always going to take on the identity of its leader, and he’s taking on a more serious approach.”

Saunders, a veteran of 13 seasons and 587 NBA wins, set the more businesslike tone from the first day of camp.

“It was difficult,” forward Antawn Jamison(notes) said. “It was a much longer training camp than we were used to. We didn’t come in saying: ‘Let’s just get through training camp.”’

Arenas played just 15 games over the last two seasons due to three operations on his left knee, but his return has a team that won just 19 games last season talking big.

“As Gilbert goes, it’s safe to say we have a better chance of winning the championship,” forward Caron Butler(notes) said.

Arenas has nothing to say about his week of camp. He declined comment, saying he won’t talk again until next year’s camp. He isn’t blogging. He isn’t tweeting. He’s just trying to fit in, Butler believes.

“Have the guys who are comfortable doing what they’re doing, and ease your way back,” Butler said. “That shows a sign of maturity.”

Saunders has never coached in the NBA finals, but he has worked with a number of championship-caliber players, including Kevin Garnett(notes), Richard Hamilton(notes) and Chauncey Billups(notes). He needs Arenas to be that type of player if the Wizards are to achieve their lofty goals.

“Your elite teams have someone who can make something happen out of nothing,” Saunders said. “Gil is a guy who can make something out of nothing. He can take you into the upper echelon with his play.”

I'm just glad to see Gilbert Arenas finally maturing. I thought that maybe his ego would get in the way the rest of his career. I think he's a tremendous player but the whole scoring point guard thing is starting to become extinct. Coaches want the point guard to bring maturity to the floor and facilitate for teammates, I'm glad to see Gil finally buying in. I would've hated for him to end his career on a bad note. Good for him.

Kobe is still the man. As far as the rape case, he was never convicted, innocent until proven guilty hero.

This has got to be the team to watch this year. watch how they fall apart. gilbert, healthy will play only for himself. i don't expect him to last long though. a coach who doesn't know if he's coming or going. look at what he did with all the talent in detroit. those guys tuned him out & coached them selves to win as much as they did. his record speaks for itself in minnesota. he was only kept as coach for so long because he was friends with the owner. the wizards will be a class act circus this year.

    Gilbert,
    LOOK! JUST LOOK!
JORDAN = ''flu game' IN THE FINALS! yet he played.
Manhattan College's KEVIN LAUE (rhymes with 'wow') = NO LEFT HAND! yet he plays!
While you only have a jammed finger and you sit out on scrimmages?
Come on now Gilbert. Tape it up! Toughen up! Let's go now!

I work at the Verizon Center and Gil is in there all the time. U bloggers no nothing about him, only what U read. He lives in the gym, even before the injuries, him and Caron. At least 5hrs a day. Stop putting opinions on here. U mf's talk too much...he's healthy, his knee is great and he looks like the Gil from GS days, the Wiz will shock this year, and I'm a Laker Fan...

#1 you should watch basketball before posting on the internet. In his last healthy year Gilbert Arenas was 3rd int he NBA in FT attempts behind Kobe and Dwayne Wade. It is easy to think he is only a shooter when your only experience with seeing him play is a couple sportscenter highlights of buzzer beaters.

Gilbert Arenas to me is always those player who is capable of taking over games with his offense, however, when he struggles shooting the ball in a game, that puts him useless. he should figure out how to get the foul line more like Pierce or Kobe.

@david: your questioning arenases work ethic? to go from a 2nd round pick to one of the best ( when healthy) is amazing. And he plays basketball 5 or more hours per day. He's a workaholic, if you question his work ethich you obvious know nothing about habachi

Arenas' biggest issue is WORK ETHIC not his finger. Similar to many people like Gilbert, he doesn't want to EARN anything. He feels he should be GIVEN everything. Know what I be sayin dawg??????
