Nelson vows to stick it out with ‘difficult’ team

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Don Nelson planned to be retired now, not running what he calls “a very difficult team to coach so far.”

Seems it’s still getting harder.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Nelson stormed out of practice Thursday after a dispute with guard Monta Ellis(notes), the latest headache for the NBA’s most dysfunctional team. Nelson, second on the NBA’s career list with more than 1,300 wins, could have avoided it all by simply walking away—which was his original thought.

“Actually the organization wanted me to do two more years,” he said Friday morning following the Warriors’ shootaround. “I was ready to retire after last season and so I signed on for two more years and I’m going to oblige my contract.”

The problems started long before the season did. Forward Stephen Jackson(notes) said he wanted to be traded, a request he made public over the summer. Ellis declared on the eve of training camp that the Warriors couldn’t win playing him and rookie Stephen Curry(notes) together in the backcourt.

And with a 2-5 record heading into their game against the Knicks, Ellis— who was unavailable for comment Friday—may be right. But Nelson expects improvement as the season goes along.

“The talent is young,” he said. “There definitely is enough young talent, but it needs to mature and get better and we’re willing to do that.”

The Warriors’ youth is the reason Jackson wants out.

“I was told this summer, coming into this season, I just thought we were going to have more of a veteran team,” he said. “That’s what my understanding was and it wasn’t that when the season started.”

Nelson suspended Jackson two games for leaving the bench during an exhibition contest, but reiterated Friday that he won’t tell the former team captain to stay away from the club, believing Jackson can help the Warriors win games.

“I think it’s hard for him because when you don’t want to be somewhere it’s hard, but yet when you’re a good enough player I think he can help us and be a factor,” Nelson said. “Not easy for him, but that’s what he’s going to have to work through.”

Jackson said they don’t communicate like they used to, but he has no issue with Nelson beyond the money he lost from the suspension and still respects his coach.

“I think at this point I come out here and respect him as a coach and do my job and leave it at that,” Jackson said. “I think that’s the best thing for me right now, to give him the respect he deserves as a coach and do my job and once I leave the gym, then I’m on my own.”

Finally. I can't believe that everyone ( ?) is seeing what the real problem is with the team. It's always been Nelson. Red flags: 1.) that first great run at the playoffs he refuses to play Folye or Powell against Utah even though they're getting smashed at the boards. Runs the team into the ground. Ok, a past for that. 2.) Next season they get rolling after Jackson gets back, but hit a wall. Who's in the doghouse with Barnes ( sorry for your loss ), Pietus. He's gotta go, but Nelson plays him. P goes on a tear and the Warriors are rolling. Gets hurt & the team starts losing. Comes back and the team is on another tear. Pietus is the player who nearly took the team to the playoffs. If not hurt they win a few more games. They still need a spark and Barnes sits on the bench, can't trust him. Won't play his big men. Same old story, run team into the ground. 3. ) Next season Baron is gone ( a tossup on this ), Barnes is gone ( still can play ) and no respect for Pietus, bye. Randolph shows promise but not good enough. Wright isn't playing, not good enough. Etc. ) Let's not forget Harrington ( what do you mean I ruin careers ). Hope that wound in the back Chris doesn't hurt when the door hits you buddy. O, and thanks. Mr. Crawford, you can't play on "my" team. Let's play Chris Webber I can trust him ( nice try Chris ). HEY! Anyone else want to coach, I need to forcus my thoughts. I got carried away at the end but get rid of this man before it's too late. Avery Johnson was there and they keep this man when it's clear he's washed up. Mad at Jackson. Fine! It's only fair since he's mad at the mess and the BS. What would you do?

nelson is an @#$%, he doesn't care about the warriors, he only cares about his record.... that's why he won't try to develop young talent, or walk away now.

I am sad to see what became one of the most exciting teams in the league when they upset Dallas in the playoffs go right back to being a cellar dweller. I personally think Nelson just wants that paycheck and the record. Nelson has management wrapped around his finger so Warriors fans are probably going to have to wait until Nelson's contract runs out for him to leave.

They have to fire Nelson...he lost interest years ago and is only doing it for the money and wins record. He pulls guys in out and out of rotation from one night to next for no apparent reason. Remember last year how he fell in love with Kurz (for about five games) started him and now he's out of league? Randolph is immensely talented as is Curry and Nelson will screw up their development. Tonight, Randolph hasn't played hardly at all...after scoring 20 in each of last two games and being leading rebounder..go figure.

Fire Nelson. This team has no future with him. Fire him tomorrow. Fire him tonight. Just get rid of him. He's never won anything. He's a terrible coach.

@51 Frank L- I really hope you read this
The Kings were one of the best teams in the NBA the beginnign of this decade, no question. The Warriors had a short run, but were one of the most exciting teams in the League. You want all-stars? Alright here we go..
    Tim Hardaway
    Mitch Richmond
    Chris Mullin
    Chris Webber
    Peja Stokavijc (sp?)
    Vlade Divac
    Elton Brand
    Antwan Jamison
    Gilbert Arenas
    Latrell Sprewell
and that's just off the top of my head.
Then you add players like Hedo Turkoglou, Baron Davis, Mike Bibby, Jason Richardson, people who could be all-stars.
So your logic fails you. If you want to roast the California Basketball teams besides the Lakers, do smoe research first so you don't look like a fool.

having the most number of wins as a coach doesn't really matter, fans keep tract of who actually won the most championships. i personally do know that phil jackson won 10 rings as a coach, but i don't even know how many wins lenny wilkins have as a coach. Nellie wants to stick out just to have a chance at that all time winning list, but if your team doesn't win ( or just don't want to win playing for you ), then those wins doesn't matter. it's time for nellie to go and let someone else handle the team. this team is full of young mismanaged talents. when a player plays bad, that's the players fault, but in this case, nellie had a riff with stephen jackson, as well as with monta, when that happens, it's on the coach, that means the players just doesn't respect him anymore, so you gotta go.... like now..!

If SJax wants out that's his right and frankly his energy isn't helping the Warriors. But bottom line Don Nelson needs to go. I agree the quicker he's gone the better the Warriors will be.

Nelson has never won because he never commits to defense; he's put up a million decent seasons with teams that cant defend. And now he's so impressed with his own 'genius' that he plays endless mind games with his players. No doubt he has a clever offensive mind, but he should be an assistant. At least Steven Jackson wants to win; Nellie gave up on that along time ago.

JimT... funny I once thought the same thing about the Nuggets. In '93 or '94 I was dragged to McNichols to see the Nuggets. They got skunked by a Jordan-less Bulls team. It's good to see the Nuggets have come a long way since then. Give GW a chance to get out of this mess, and you may be suprised.

wow this is yet another sign that nellie should just be fired. he's done, he was done last summer and the ridiculously clueless GM and owner still wanted him back. never mind that an uncommitted coach cant get players motivated, nevermind that nelson hasnt gotten close to coaching any kind of contender in years and of course nevermind that the warriors look straight up bad right now. so instead we get an unmotivated nellie who is sorta mailing in his trickery and matchup based style of coaching which by the way was never really that effective anyway. this team needs a committed coach who will instill discipline and a system that can get this team to improve. gimmicky stuff isnt going to work. you know like starting 2 undersized guards, neither of which is really a true pg. like bringing one of your best players off the bench because you dont like his game. like starting corey maggette at pf. there are so many things to point to. nellie is mailing it in and his players know it. fire him now before he does damage that takes 10 seasons to recover from. its not like he's ever done that before though right? oh yeah never mind.

Chosen One - Post 55, You missed that Webber and Richmond are both former Warriors. Maybe they didn't make allstar teams there, I forget, but they made their names and great starts there. And like all the rest moved on. There's a toxic atmosphere around the team here, inside and outside the organization. Riding BART to a game one night the talk was all about the clubbing and dancing afterwards and not the game. So maybe Oakland gets what it deserves. Too bad.

Call the players what you want to, you may in fact be correct in some of the cases (thugs, babies etc.), but Don Nelson is a terrible coach. He may have the second most wins in the history of the game but that just means he is great at getting coaching jobs and surviving off of a less than earned reputation. Don't forget that he was "consulted" on all personnel decisions. Therefore he should be held partially accountable for the players he has now.

The NBA should just contract and get rid of some of these eternally pathetic franchises (Warriors, Grizzlies, Clippers for example) and just have a smaller pool of professional players. Then we wouldn't have so many overpaid prima donna's complaining about playing a game for millions of dollars.

personally i'd rather see Nelson not stick it out. He's hanging around to hopefully beat Wilkins all time wins record while not even coaching this team. They don't have any semblance of an offense, or identity. When is Nelson going to learn that just because the smalls beat the bigs during celtics practice in the 60s doesn't mean it's going to work in a real game. If i can only get 300 million people to donate a dollar to me, i'll go ahead and buy the team, and make them into a winner.

I thought the million-dollar contracts for these whining thugs include a phrase "shut the fcuk up and keep working"?? Where else can you get your paycheck and keep threatneing your employers and keep adding conditions to your work?? All I can say is the GSW organization has made serious misjudgement on characters all these years. They just can't bring in MEN to the team. All they have is a bunch of gheto thugs who happen to shoot a few balls into the hoop when they FEEL like to.
