Rubio: NBA move too risky, complicated

  • Print

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)—Ricky Rubio(notes) wants to keep playing basketball in Spain, saying a move to the Minnesota Timberwolves would be too risky and complicate his life.

The 19-year-old point guard was sent from DKV Joventut to Barcelona on Tuesday after the Catalan club paid Rubio’s $5 million buyout clause.

Rubio, the Timberwolves’ fifth overall pick in this year’s draft, agreed to a six-year deal that included a buyout clause that allows him to leave for the NBA after two years.

“Going to Minnesota would have just complicated my life a lot. It was a risk and I didn’t see it so clearly,” Rubio said. “My priority was the NBA and it was impossible for the Minnesota Timberwolves to pay my buyout clause, so I wanted to stay home.”

Timberwolves president David Kahn traveled to Spain three times to try to work out a deal and appeared to have secured Rubio’s passage to Minnesota less than 48 hours before the player changed his mind.

“When the season ended, I entered the draft with the intention of going to the NBA,” Rubio said Wednesday. “But some things happened that kept me from being ahead of the rest and I ended up No. 5, which I was happy with, but it didn’t allow me the chance to go to the NBA. I tried, but in the end it wasn’t to be.”

NBA guidelines limit the amount of money Minnesota could have contributed to Rubio’s buyout at $500,000. Kahn said a package of endorsement deals and sponsorships had helped make the NBA deal attractive enough for Rubio and Joventut to enter into an agreement on Saturday.

“They could only put half a million into it, and I think that the deal with Minnesota had too many obstacles,” Rubio said.

Rubio said he was still committed to going to the NBA, even though there is no guarantee the starting point guard spot will still be around.

“I won’t lie,” Rubio said. “My objective has always been the NBA.”

Bottom line: Rubio's good, but he's not ready for the NBA yet. Also get the feeling from his comments that he's not quite ready to leave the nest yet.

with his lack of a mid range game, he's no Pistol Pete. Like so many Euro "stars" who come into the NBA overhyped (Kukoc, Marciulonis, Sabonis, Milicic, Schrempf etc), their games look great in Europe, but when they get to the NBA, they discover that it's at a whole new level.

Besides Nowitzki, can't think of one Euro who's come in and played among the NBA's elite.

After the way he handled the situation, he should not be allowed to play in the NBA until he pays Minnesota what an average 5th round pick would sign for a three year contract.

As I stated yesterday I hate how he handled the whole issue. But truth be told he needs to stay in Spain & develop. Watch his highlights he blows by slower guards & defenders. And he struggles with his mid range game. So he needs a few years to develop. Had he came to the Timberwolves it would have been nothin more then a fancy show of passing & every now & then blowing by somebody for a lay-up. I hate to say Brandon Jennigs was correct but he nailed it on the head when he said Rubio was "over hyped" and not ready for the NBA yet.

The reason the Wolves drafted all point guards is now clear -- it was always a risky proposition. As a Kings, fan, I'm glad Sacto picked Ty Evans. He's likely to be far more valuable than Rubio when all is said and done. Plus, I can't help but think that Jeff Petrie (Kings GM) had a clue that Rubio wouldn't jump the pond yet. The Wolves seem to have a cloud over them since that shady McHale-cooked Joe Smith deal. People in the twin cities deserve better.

Thanks 683 jeezee10 for the info on Minnesota's retaining the rts. to Rubio as long as he doesn't take a year off from pro ball. Isn't it kind of weird that with the multitude of NBA writers out there we can't confirm the important details of this issue? C'mon Yahoo! A little depth would be appreciated. I miss Steve Kerr. I think he was a much better writer than GM.

he is no different than eli manning, john elway, or bo jackson who where all willing to choose another alternative than play for a team they don't want to... he is being politically correct by making those statements. what he really wanted to say was, i don't want to play for the wolves because they don't have their stuff together good enough to warrant a player of my caliber.

i personally believe that foreign players should have to be 19 years old just like american born players or do a year of college or something, because for every pau gasol there's like eight overseas players who are drafted in the first round that should have never even been given the opportunity.

oh well, toni kukoc jr can try to fit in the nba in a couple of years, until then enhance enhancing his skills and body structure won't hurt his chances.

What's the worst punishment for the damned sissy of a Spanish weed?
Should the Wolves which hold his right let him rot in Europe? This way he couldn't get more sports endorsement contracts as the Euro market is limited compared to the worldwide exposure the NBA could give him.
Should he be taken two years from now and then traded to a cellar-dweller losing team?
It really depends on the conned Kahn if he wants to teach this brash idiot a lesson. And maybe on Jonny Flynn.

This attention to Rubio will just make the road for Rubio hard from now on. These praises that he is a brilliant player will work out against him. In the coming world competitions where he will compete, he is a marked "kid" as Toni Kukoc was . Remember the infatuation of the Bull's GM with Kokuc? Well, as Kukoc himself said, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen conspired to really embarassed him. They shackled him with their guarding in the Olympic games.
The NBA point guards who will face Rubio in future world competitions will do the same to him. He won't be as effective as in the last Olympics. They know whom to guard and they will learn his moves. The US Basketball Team players and coaches alike, will henceforth watch his Euro League games.

Post 676, BassoonMan, from what I read so far from columns and articles, the Wolves have the draft right to Rubio as long as he plays professionally in any pro league.
But if he stops playing pro for one year, then the Wolves lose their right. Bambino Rubio can then re-enter the NBA draft.
I have browse through the NBA rules but didn't find the rules. Maybe have to look over again.
