Nash guides Suns to surprising fast start

  • Print

PHOENIX (AP)—The Phoenix Suns are supposed to be an aging NBA afterthought, a team that a couple of years ago saw its best title shot slip away.

Few could have foreseen the way this team has bolted out of the starting gate. With Steve Nash(notes) as good as ever, Amare Stoudemire on the mend and an array of sharpshooters firing away, the Suns are off to an 11-3 start.

Going into Tuesday’s action, coach Alvin Gentry’s team was tied for the best record in the league.

“It’s a lot of fun. My teammates are great,” Nash said. “We’re playing in a fun style where we move the ball a lot. We’re not really a fastbreak team like we used to be but the ball still moves. I think the guys are just playing hard for one another.”

“We enjoy each other on the court and off and it makes all the difference in the world when you have that singular vision and everyone buys into it.”

Nobody was talking that way a year ago, when many players, including Nash, weren’t buying into new coach Terry Porter’s system. Porter wanted a slower game, a defensive-oriented style, a system that, except for Shaquille O’Neal(notes), failed to match the personnel at hand.

Porter was fired at the All-Star break and O’Neal was traded to Cleveland in the offseason. Now the court is wide open for Nash and his teammates to do what they do best.

Stoudemire is back, wearing protective goggles following serious eye surgery that sidelined him for the final 29 games last season. He leads the team in scoring at 19.9 points per game.

“He’s probably 80-85 percent now,” Gentry said. “I still think there’s a little bit more that he can do for us, but he’s getting better and as he gets a little better, our team will get a little better.”

With O’Neal no longer clogging the middle, Nash and Stoudemire again are making the pick and roll the tough-to-defend heart of the Suns’ offense.

“The spacing is good. Everybody’s comfortable,” Stoudemire said. “It feels great when guys know where they’re supposed to be and then when the ball comes out to them they’re ready to shoot or pass because the rhythm and flow is perfect right now.”

Gentry promised to return the team to the high-flying style of coach Mike D’Antoni, and while the Suns might not quite be the “seven seconds or less” squad of those days, they still are a highly entertaining bunch.

Phoenix leads the NBA in scoring with a 110.35 average and is the only team that has topped 100 points in each of its games. The Suns are making 44.4 percent of their 3-pointers, a better percentage than eight teams are shooting overall from the field.

At the controls is the 35-year-old Nash.

“I think he’s playing right now better than he did the year he got the MVP, either one of them,” Gentry said.

Nash is averaging 17.1 points and an NBA-best 11.6 assists per game. He already has two 20-assist games and is shooting 52 percent from the field, 44 percent on 3s.

But numbers don’t really describe his play, the way he is weaving through towering defenders, then softly tossing the ball—with either hand—off the glass for a layup, or somehow finding the open man.

The question, of course, is whether this team will prove to be any good over the grueling 82-game season.

“I think going in I kind of knew we’d be better than what people thought,” forward Grant Hill(notes) said. “What that means overall, it’s still too early to judge. But I think we’re good. We like each other. We play hard and have good chemistry. We’re defending.”

Gentry won’t call his team a title contender. The aim is to just get back to the playoffs after missing them in a dysfunctional 2008-09 season.

“I just think this is a special group of guys,” Gentry said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen but I do know that night in and night out we’ll compete and play extremely hard and try to play together, and to me as a coach whatever happens after that I would be willing to accept.”

Won't "pound my chest" on a Phoenix blog but (Jethro) was bad-mouthing the Lakers on their blog so we thought we'd come over and "pound some chest". Jethro- you must not be a sports fan as their are luxury taxes in basketball and hockey. Football is reaching parity and baseball have the Yankees. Sucks, doesn't it? Small market teams in baseball have it a lot worse than basketball (re:Yankees/Red Sox/ Mets). Of course, if you know sports, the Mets are a shining example of having a blown up team salary and not win. In basketball, you have the Knicks blown up team salary and we know where they are at. As for the last 10 years, Phoenix may have beaten the Lakers but the Lakers also have 4 championship rings during that same span (pounding my chest!)! So, from the numbers provided, the Suns beat the Lakers but never got any further, cuz the Lakers took Phoenix's game when the Lakers lost. Such an intimidating bunch of basketball players the Suns have as they thought beating the Lakers would produce them a championship! LOL. Lets add up the championships during the last 10 years. Lakers have 4, Miami won 1; Detroit won 1; Boston 1; San Antonio the rest. Where is Phoenix? Till the Suns win one, they can't "pound their chest" until they become champs in basketball. Don't want to rub it in but hey, spotted you on the Lakers blog and just returning the favor...

i think nash is a good player it is not his fault they got shaq just as don't think it will be lebrons fault he is stuck with shaq now, lebron and nash may be the best players never to win a ring odds are against both of them playing where they play and the owners and coaches they play for great for the regular season but neither coach will win in the finals and neither do 2 man teams. This year as long as healthy it's all about the lakers and the celtics As far as the doofs who keep crying rapist why do you think she went to his room,TO GET PAID!! she went to his room by her own free will, he was just stupid enough to fall for it just like every athlete on the road women throw there bodys around hoping for a good time or a payday she got both she got more money than she could ever earn. really pretty sad !

Nash is an outstanding point guard who deserved the two MVP titles. He makes the entire phoenix suns team go. Everyone needs to stop hating and give him the respect he deserves. Though I do agree he does not play great defense and he probably wont win a title in his career he is still an MVP caliber player.

Yusef- Wow. First off, thanks for letting all us know that LeBron will eventually win championships. Can you tell me the lotto number tonight too? How do you know LeBron will? The best players do not always win championships. LeBron's best chance at it was last year and he choked in the conference Finals. And don't think having Shaq there gives him a better chance, he just isn't right for Cleveland's style of play. Plus, all the guys you named who are better than Nash are probably better than Nash, but Nash didn't have to compete with a fella named Michael Jordan for his MVP trophies. And there's a big difference between regular season MVP and Finals MVP. He was the best player on a top-tier team with the highest scoring offense, deal with it.

And you argument about how they should give out MVP after the season like baseball is just stupid. The 2 MVPs this year didn't play in the World Series.

Nash could very well lead the Suns to the Finals. We're only 1/4 into the regular season, there's a lot of basketball to play and right now they're looking pretty good.

    To A.S.,

"What difference does NBA Finals make over conference finals?" Players are drafted by teams in professional sports to lead their teams to Championship games. Greatness is defined by ability to WIN in the post season. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant are considered legends because of their ability to win in the post season. Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkely, and John Stockton at least led their teams to the NBA Finals. Virtually, all NBA Hall of Famers have played in at least one NBA Finals game, especially those AWARDED TWO MVPs.
Steve Nash has never led the Phoenix Suns to a single NBA FInals appearance. When he left the Dallas Mavericks, the Mavericks went on to play in the NBA Finals. Nash IS NOT A WINNER.

STEVE NASH= MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY!

    Mximus,

The Phoenix Suns will not be playing in the NBA Finals this year. Yes, they are off to a hot start, but in December, they will have to play the Lakers, Celtics, Magic, and Cavaliers. We shall see how good they really are in December. The Lakers, Nuggets, Spurs, and even the Mavericks are better than the Phoenix Suns in a seven game series. Right now, the Lakers have the same record as the Phoenix Suns. Kobe Bryant and his LA Lakers will probably represent the Western Conference in the 2010 NBA Finals. KOBE FOR HIS SECOND MVP!

STEVE NASH= MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY WHO HAS NEVER PLAYED A SINGLE NBA FINALS GAME!

    Yousef,
You're as stupid as anyone can be. Steve Nash does not need a prove stamp from idiots like you. If you can't figure out the Suns have been screwed by Stern and his refrees then you should not come here and spit your nonsense. what difference does NBA final makes than a conference final? I'm sure you're one of those who would say "HE DOESN'T HAVE A RING" if Nash actually reached the finals before.

Some people argue for the sake of arguing!!! are you saying Toni Parker, D-Haward, or Jameer Nelson are better players than Nash?

Jethro, are you aware of the fact that the NBA had to borrow money last year and that the luxury cap is helping the league? News flash, all teams buy championships, some owners are just richer and more willing to spend money than others.

When tempted to respond to outrageously biased and ignorant posts please consider that the perps are most likely shriveled souls who’ve become ego invested in their favorites and their villains. Their predictable themes sometimes even mimic logical discourse but are based on mere assertions that are convenient for their rants. Their passion rarely has any focus other than deluded validation of their moral and intellectual conceits. The passion is not about the player or the team; it’s about them, always.

So what you are saying yusef that when the Sun's are in the nba finals, you will come on the site & admit you were wrong? Suns have already had one champsionship stolen by Stern when Nash was playing. What makes you think they can't get there again. As far as I'm concerned the rapist has won 1. The other 3 were Shaq diesel. As far a Labron goes he's good, but he plays in the east where there are 2-3 good teams. The west has 8-9 good teams. I know you are not that smart, but find someone to help you out a little. I'm sure there is some kind outreach program.

OK all you Laker fan party poopers that come in here and pound your chest about how Nash doesn't deserve MVP or how great your team is I have one thing to say to you...

How well have the Lakers done against the Suns in the playoffs in the last 10 years????

    That's right Suns OWN you!

Truth hurts and now go back and rub your own pewsys and pray you don't have to play us in the playoffs. If you're not worried about the Suns in the playoffs then you just don't know your history. Yeah we made a mistake and had that EX-LAKER Shaq on our team and we suddenly became lame but that's history. But you have to realise that the only people that like your team are bandwagoners, frontrunners and ppl that live in Cali. The rest of the country thinks of your team as a bunch of arrogant head cased prima-donnas. You are the Yankees of basketball. All your rings you bought and it don't take a rocket scientist to figure out if you have the money to go over the luxary tax you can afford better players. Teams like the Lakers is the reason why they need a hard cap with no luxary tax exceptions. The league would be better if teams like the Bucks and Pacers had the same chance at the begining of the year as all other teams. The Suns are a small market team like the Pacers and the Bucks plus they play in the western conference. So when they send teams like the Lakers home in the playoffs like recent history as shown that's an accomplishment greater then getting a ring you buy. When you lose the rest of the country laughs. The fans of the Lakers come around spouting off how great they are and show zero respect for any other team. This lack of respect is what fires up the other teams that will beat you and enjoy beating you. When will you figure that out?

I know that there are a lot of Nash supporters out there, BUT GREAT PLAYERS FIND WAYS TO LEAD THEIR TEAM TO CHAMPIONSHIPS. Steve Nash will go down in history as the only two time MVP to NEVER HAVE PLAYED IN AN NBA FINALS GAME. He can win games in the regular season, but he can't do anything in the post season. Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, and John Stockton at least took their teams to the NBA Finals. Nash can't even do that. LeBron James will eventually win a championship, Kobe already has four NBA rings, and D-Wade led the Miami Heat to the 2006 NBA Championship. They are far superior players to Steve Nash, yet they don't have the MVPs that he does.

STEVE NASH= MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY!

    yusef,

think about it first, stockton had malone, gary payton had shawn kemp, jason kidd had a bunch of other stars in his team but with steve nash, he did have stoudamire but he is not the heart and soul of the phoenix suns that's why he was awarded with the MVP award.

On another note, jason kidd should have won the finals MVP when his New Jersey Nets fought the LA Lakers in their finals match a couple of years back. Unfortunately, Shaq won the award.

I will agree Nash's defense is not the greatest. But look at the other mvp's. Lebron James good passer, scorer & rebounder not very good shooting percentage from field or 3. Kobe Great scorer, good defender, passing(non existent), Dirk good scorer & rebounder, passing (non existent). You can go down the list & everyone who has won the MVP has some weaknesses. Not one is perfect in every aspect of the game. It is the league MVP, but they also consider where your team would be without you.

Your stupid post takes everything out of context! Go back and analyze the Stockton, Kidd, and Payton years and see who else was playing in the NBA at that time..... Jordan and an ongoing list of Hall of Famers.....that's why they didn't win an MVP.

John Stockton is one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. He helped the Utah Jazz to two NBA Finals appearances. Yet, he has no MVPs and STEVE NASH DOES. Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, and especially John Stocton all accomplished more in their careers than Steve Nash. Nash gets all the hype from the media.

Like Major League Baseball, the NBA should hand out its MVP after the end of the season. An MVP should be rewarded to the BEST PLAYER IN THE ENTIRE NBA SEASON, NOT JUST THE REGULAR SEASON. If this had occured, there is NO WAY NASH WOULD HAVE WON A SINGLE MVP.

STEVE NASH= MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY!

Steve Nash is a great player, but I don't know how he's won MVP twice. He can score and pass, but his defense isn't all that good. An MVP candidate to me is someone who is good in all categories and has lead their team to success, which he hadn't done in the years he won MVP. I don't think the MVP voting should be until after the playoffs. The person who wins should be someone who has guided their team through the season and the playoffs.

First off the guy that says the 80 lakers couldn't play D has got to be kidding. Cooper was one of the best defensive player's I ever say. Magic wasn't strong enough? WTF? Magic in his prime did whatever he wanted. Kareem, Worthy, et al....high lever defensive players. And I freakin' hate the Lakers.

Secondly, Steve Nash is a clutch shooter and a creative playmaker. Granted, the Suns style is such that one questions whether they can win in the playoffs. But he deserved his MVP awards.

Lebron James? When Larry Bird was his age, he was averaging about 5 more rebounds per game than Lebron. When one consider the athleticism of Lebron relative to Larry, that is quite a tell. LEBRON JAMES IS A 6'9" INCH ALLEN IVERSON. If Cleveland wanted to win they should start watching the 80's Celtics and see how they used Larry Bird.

yousef, what? the mvp is handed out before the finals, and it's not like they're going to hand it out based on if a player has made the finals before. id say lebron is more overrated. not that nash is a better player or anything, but lebron has been annointed the next coming of MJ without winning a finals? i mean, thats the standard you're holding nash to, postseason success, and bron-bron has choked. yeah, he beat the pistons pretty much single-handly, then he follows that up by getting swept in the finals? come on. then he loses in the east finals to the magic when he was hugely favored. come on. if you wanna bind nash's success to his team's success, do the same for lebron.
