Road to success? Spurs hope so on rodeo road trip

  • Print

SAN ANTONIO (AP)—The San Antonio Spurs had just finished a dreary homestand with another loss when Manu Ginobili(notes) was asked: Might he or Tony Parker(notes) be traded to turn things around?

A reporter didn’t ask. It was a season-ticket holder.

Limping into an three-week road trip starting Wednesday that Tim Duncan(notes) says is the most important one yet, this is the Spurs: so inconsistent that the once-absurd idea of trading two of the Big Three is sounding plausible to some of their most loyal fans.

Ginobili doesn’t think he or Parker are going anywhere. But where the Spurs are ultimately headed may be determined in the next eight games.

The Rodeo Road Trip—the annual get-it-together moment for the Spurs—has arrived.

“We really need to get this bunker mentality together more than before,” Ginobili said after the Spurs went 2-4 at home in 12 days. “If we’re going to be the contenders we know we can be, this is the time we’ve got to show up.”

Mostly because time is running out.

The Spurs are 27-19—a bottom seed in the Western Conference if the playoffs began today, and certainly worse than most expected after the Spurs got healthy this summer and went on a spending spree to keep the window open for a fifth NBA title.

The record is the lowest winning percentage San Antonio has carried into Feb. 1 in the Duncan era. The Spurs also better get used to the road, because thanks to a frontloaded home schedule, they have just 12 games in San Antonio the rest of the season.

Panic is not a Spurs custom. Winning streaks or losing skids, coach Gregg Popovich and his veteran core keep the Spurs even-keeled and always mindful of perspective. They play for April and May, not December and January.

But February is a traditional turning point. Since the Spurs moved into the AT&T Center in 2002, they’re left homeless each year about this time by the annual San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Popovich has seized on the trip as an inimitable bonding opportunity—no families, no distractions—and with great success.

The Spurs are 40-16 in seven rodeo toad trips. The trek has traditionally propelled their final burst to the playoffs, and with San Antonio struggling to find traction, Duncan declared this trip crucial for the Spurs.

“We hope the results of the past are what we get now,” Duncan said. “Because we need to turn that corner. We’ve always used this trip to kind of get on a roll. Hopefully we can do just that and come back a better team than we’re leaving.”

What the Spurs want to leave behind is sloppy defense and unreliable shooting. Popovich began a season-long, six-game homestand last month flustered that “we’re scoring more points than we’ve ever scored in our lives, but our defense is really sub-par and it’s killing us.”

That much is true: the Spurs average nearly 101 points a game, a record pace under Popovich. But so is allowing 96.2 points to opponents.

When the homestand ended Sunday with a loss to Denver, Popovich turned his frustration toward the offense, even though the Nuggets were still allowed to shoot 54 percent. He criticized the team’s inability to make a basket at big moments.

“We can’t expect to shoot like this two out of every four games and expect to get anywhere,” Popovich said. “People got to step up and make some …. shots.”

The road trip begins against the Kings, followed by Portland on Thursday before heading to Los Angeles. San Antonio plays the Lakers on Monday and will face a team expected to be much more healthy than the team the Spurs blew out last month.

San Antonio may be the short-handed one this time. The Spurs have not said when they’ll get back Parker, who has missed the last two games with an ankle sprain.

“If we beat Sacramento or Portland it doesn’t make us all the sudden feel excited about the way we’re playing,” swingman Richard Jefferson(notes) said. “We’re looking for consistency over a 10, 12, 15-game stretch.”

Pop is a great coach and I think he has always done an excellent job of focusing on what his team needs to do to win. This seems to be one of the first years the team hasn't responded. I don't know if it is Jefferson, or a hobbled Parker, or a clearly cold Mason and Ginoboli, but their offense is shaky at best and their defense is nonexistent. That's where I struggle with thinking that this Rodeo Trip will turn things around. To make this turn around, they will not only need to win games, but do it keeping the opposing teams shooting under .500. They have the talent to do it and there are guys like Blair, Hill, and Duncan who are busting their chops to do it. And I think they do need Finley shooting and back in a groove. He gets a lot of slack from people, but is one of the Spurs best shooters and unlike Bonner is not a liability in the paint.

This years champion caliber teams are Cleveland Cavalier, Magics, Nuggets and fakers. This 4 teams will meet at Eastern and Western conferences final.

Sorry Spurs and Celtics, you are too old and too porous defensively to compete for title, unless you make some good trades before deadline. Hawks are dangerous, Mavericks are talented but too soft mentally, specially playing against fakers.

Cavalier will beat fakers in 6 games to win title.

Oh yeah, the Spurs will be fine. IF you consider fighting for the 8th spot in the playoffs fine.

Road miracles aren't going to happen this year. Facts speak very loudly. Spurs are an average team, just a tad more. The Spurs have long missed the window to Steal some talent for Ginosebleed. Parker, as much as you don't like this, has never, ever been a true point guard. Facts speak to this. Age, beaten up bodies, it's all caught up with the Spurs. It couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of whiners. I have no loyalty to any NBA team. But when you should carry yourself as the champions you've been, and are, you should'nt blame any and every one for your failures. Their announcers on FS are two of the worst announcers I've ever listened to. They make me sick. Like spurs fans, they are close minded loyalists that can't even begin to see the truth. Or able to accept it.

Actually, Timmo, I think the dates are correct. Read some of the comments – they seem to be talking about the Spurs at the 10-game mark. I think the writer posted this story as an update to an old one.

Surprising the Spurs are 4-6, but at some point they will win 13 of 15 and be heading towards 55 or so wins.

As long as Pop continues his love affair with Michael Finley and Matt Bonner the Spurs will go no where fast! He talks about experimenting but he under utilizes Dejuan Blair, Hairston and Bogans. Maybe even use Theo a little bit more instead of bringinging him in for 1 minute and then out. I live in Dallas and have been a fan for a very long time, but Pop is flunking in his substitution rotation, and he shows no inclination to change anything anytime soon. We all understand that Pop is preaching defense, but Bonner is not the answer.

Just look at the Celtics...with the exception of the opening night win in Cleveland (against a struggling to mesh cavs team), they are struggling now too. All their wins early on that propelled them to such a great record early on were against crappy teams...many of them at home. Wins at home against: charlotte, chicago, NO, UT, and GS; Wins @ Philly, Min, NJ. And yet they lose at home against: Pho, Atl, & Orl; and lose @Ind. Oh, and they dont have any major induries yet. As a big fan of SA, I'm surely disappointed, but not enough to get worried. If it comes to All-Star break and they are at .500, then i'll be worried, but even then its not out of the picture for them to win their division. And Dallas? Please, all that they've done is win at home. They've lost at NO and SA, only beating teams in Min, Det, and Mil. The only teams that should be worried are ones that have all of their pieces healthy and have 2 or less wins.

Humans have a short term memory by nature. For anyone who follows the NFL, the Denver Broncos were legitimate Superbowl contenders 4 weeks ago...now? Struggling to hold off the Chargers and probably won't make the playoffs. That's sports folks, 10 games out of 82 and the Spurs are in trouble? Please, take that sh*t elsewhere! These are the SAN ANTONIO SPURS for god's sake!

Just a month ago it was "Spurs have best off season additions in the western conference". Now it's apparent that Dallas had the best off season. That after showing the Spurs the door in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Marion, Tim Thomas, Gooden, That little PG from France that can REALLY play. Mavs are stacked and ready for a deep run. Spurs look old and tired. Denver got no better. The Lakers got better simply because they have a healthy Bynum. Blazers are decent as well. Looks like the Spurs are free falling behind a LOT of talent in the West, not just because of injuries, but an inability to keep up with new talent in the conference. Even the defensively inept Suns look stronger than the Spurs. Oh well...Duncan got his rings...now he looks like Ewing in his later years.

the first ten games do not decide a champion and until it does there is no need to worry, the spurs will be in the mix later in the yr and if the lakers arent worried now then they will not repeat, why dont they talk about the lakers injuries they usually have like three articles on them anyways.

Its funny how people take the records in the first 10 games of the season so seriously every single damn year. I remember a couple years ago when the Jazz started like 11-0 and they ended up with like the 6th or 7th spot. Popovich has always understood his team and known when to worry and when not to...I think his current reaction to all this will speak for itself come April.

They need fresh and new legs in Spurs. I know that the Spurs don't want "hyped players" , but I think Lebron James would be a good choice next year since he will be a free agent. Iverson could also be another choice for I believe Popovich could discipline him. They need younger SG , SF & PF that they can depend on. It's time to rebuild Spurs. If Lebron wanna win a ring , it's best for him to join Spurs and build a younger team around him. Popovich is a very intelligent coach and a good disciplinarian and I'm sure he could still win championships with Lebron. If only Rip Hamilton is a free agent , he is also my choice for SG.

It's just the start of the season... there are still plenty of games to be played. They've won their first 2 games because the team was complete... parker, manu , timmy plus rj & finley. If they keep having "star" injuries after 30 games , then I guess it's the right time to say that they won't make it this year. Yup, this article is really a waste.

Nobody's crying for the Spurs, and they shouldn't. Chances are, they'll be around for the playoffs. As far as another title is concerned, yeah right. It sucks getting old.

Woe is me! My Spurs are 4-6. GASP!!! Come on. The spurs will be fine. This was a wasted article. Y rn't we talking about how good the hawks look, or even the suns, or the winless nets. The spurs have injuries (so does NJ) but they'll heal eventually and all will be good come first of the year. But seriously, how r the hawks this good? R they legit?
