Spurs’ Ginobili has rabies shot after catching bat

  • Print

Manu Ginobili(notes) has decided to stay away from bats in the future.

The San Antonio Spurs star says on his Facebook page that he had to be vaccinated for rabies after catching a bat and removing it from the court during a victory over Sacramento on Halloween.

Ginobili posted Monday that he doesn’t know if the bat had rabies but he had to get vaccinated to make sure he was safe. He also encouraged people to “avoid contact with bats, skunks, raccoons, rats and animals like that.”

The bat swooped into the AT&T Center on Saturday night and descended onto the court late in the first period. The bat circled and left only to return— briefly.

Ginobili swatted it out of the air with a bare hand and carried the creature off the court to thunderous cheers.

Neil C....I have read your post several times and still don't know what the hell you're trying to say or what your point is. Comment 50 & 51.....The point of my comment is that Vick only bankrolled his operation, he didn't personally do the things that everyone thinks he did. Manu personally smacked the bat out of mid-air as if he were playing handball or something. Seems like a pretty cruel way to "capture" a bat if you have the mindset that hurting animals is wrong. I personally would have done the same thing Manu did, except I may have stepped on the bat too. It just seems a little hypocritical to react a certain way toward Vick, but say nothing about what Manu did. I mean, that bat was pretty small and at the velocity it was traveling, combined with the impact because of the strength at which Manu swung, I really don't believe the bat survived.

The reason why they gave him the vaccinations instead of testing the bat first is because of the amount of time it takes for the results to come back and the effect the potential infection could have on Manu if he waited for the tests to come back. Compound that situation further with the fact that they are currently on the road until Nov. 9 where even if he discovered he was infected on the road, team doctors wouldn't be there to treat him. I know what you're thinking "there are doctors outside of San Antonio you moron!" The team would much rather it's own doctors treat it's players. Doctors in general don't wait for tests to come back in these situations, the best decision is to treat the patient as if there is an infection. Haven't you ever been bitten by a dog?

    Sorry Nathan, no comparison.

I'm sure you'd of caught it and stuffed it up your @ss. It's just a rodent with wings right? The animal rights, hetero-flexibles make me want to vomit. You rag on Vick, but have no issues with your own types slowly suffocating rodents in their intestinal tracts.

Nathan.....He did not kill the bat..he knock it down and the bat flew away when they let it outside. If he killed the bat they could of tested it for rabies. Good try though.

#50 - Where in the article does it say that he killed it? It just said he captured it and took it outside. Why would PETA be involved for that?

This story is so funny, but I am wondering wear all of the animal lovers are here. Why are they not bashing Manu the same way they bashed Vick? Vick bankrolls a dog fighting ring and they persecute him, but no one jumps on Manu when he PERSONALLY kills a bat with his bare hands, in a sold out arena with television cameras broadcasting it???? Come on people, if you're a fanatic for one incident, you need to reciprocate the same feelings in others. Maybe it's the fact that bats aren't household pets. Sounds like a HYPOCRACY to me. PETA, if you don't get involved and at least make a statement, your agenda will come to the forefront on this one.

#47 - My post was way funnier. Besides Kobe didn't rape the bat, it was consensual anal intercourse.

Being infected by a bat doesn't make you Batman, it makes you a vampire. You guys are thinking of a nuclear spider and Spiderman. Get your comic books right.

Now that BatManu KillNobili is a vampire the only way to kill him is a stake through the heart.
