Ricky Rubio talked up by NBA rivals in waiting

  • Print

MADRID (AP)—The NBA’s quick swing through Spain didn’t yield Ricky Rubio(notes), although it did provide plenty of anticipation for one of Europe’s biggest talents.

The Spaniard’s decision to play at least two more years at home despite being drafted fifth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in June had left many in North America puzzled.

But for some NBA players the move made sense.

“He’s still so young. It’s good for him to get a couple of more years playing over here and then make the transition over,” Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams(notes) said Wednesday as his team prepared for a preseason game against Real Madrid.

“I think he’s a great player. He’s definitely going to be a good player in our league, he has all the skills—ball handling, court vision, he knows how to lead a team. It’s just a matter of maturing and becoming a better player.”

When DKV Joventut failed to reach a deal with the Timberwolves, the 19-year-old Rubio was dealt to Barcelona, where he agreed to a five-year deal but with a buy-out to leave for the NBA.

Former Michigan player Louis Bullock says Toronto Raptors guard Jose Manuel Calderon is the example Rubio should follow.

“He waited, got a lot of years of Euro league under his belt and also with the national team, and when he made that jump you saw the immediate impact that he had,” the Madrid guard said. “Ricky could follow in those footsteps. He definitely has the tools and the talent, but the NBA is brutal.”

Rubio is a player “ahead of his time,” according to Utah’s Russian forward, Andrei Kirilenko(notes), but he still needs more time if he is going to arrive in the NBA with the confidence to lead a team.

“This kind of expectations, everyone expects him to play at the highest level and to be a major star in the league,” Kirilenko said. “It’s hard to predict because it’s such a tough league. A lot of stars come into the league and disappear and a lot of stars come into the league and shine.”

Rubio is among, perhaps, Spain’s best ever crop of players, which include Pau Gasol(notes), Rudy Fernandez(notes) and Calderon. Spain is the current world and European champion and finished runner-up to the United States at last year’s Beijing Olympics, when the world learned about Rubio.

“They’ve been one of the best countries in basketball for a while,” Williams said. “We finally got back with winning the gold medal, back to the top, but they’re probably our strongest competition.”

Jazz forward Carlos Boozer(notes) expects great things from an opponent he knows from Beijing, but remained weary of predicting anything.

“Every player plays good before they get to the NBA, but when they get to the NBA, we’ll see,” Boozer said.

And another thing Why are people so biased about the euroleague; these "gay" comments are so inappropriate. People shouldn't take them so lightly & talks crap cause u can end up embarrassing yourself. If people missed this, NBA European Tour is taking place as we speak and even NBA teams acknowledge the strength of European teams.
Euroleague teams have beaten NBA teams five times as part of the NBA's Europe Live Tour since 2005.

I’ve bumped into italian, greek, polish, fans & i've seen chinese/japanese fansites personality-wise he is a very likable person or it could be that he looks like he can’t scare a fly i think that's why they are so enthrall by him idk but it's working for him

Deron Williams is an idiot. He should play basketball and not speak. Great player, but holy @#$% is he stupid. Same with Wade.

You certainly don't hear either of them talking about going back to school ever...it's a shame.

Rubio has too much baggage. I am sure he knew the money he took for the past couple of years from the european team will cost him this year for nba, but he did it anyway. Oh well, now he gets to wait. Too bad. Amazing talent. That dude is special.

Ernest, not everyone is calling Mr. Rubio gay other than a couple of uneducated neanderthals. I agree with the rest of your post though.

"The Judge" must be an NBA All-star or past NBA player ... I mean hes calling out the European league as a girls league, that's bold. Shoot he's so good he could play anywhere in Europe and also school Ricky Rubio with one arm tied behind his back.... hell i wonder who he is, so i can get tickets to see him play at the Staples Center, see if he can backup what hes saying

The NBA is stupid. I have it on good authority that a good 15% of the players in the NBA are closet homosexuals so your comments about gay Spain are not homophobic, they're just stupid. Like NBA basketball. The whole thing is a hype, a pseudo-sport where the rules are bent in deference to idiots like you who like dunking and saying stupid stuff like "get that weak *@%$ out of my face!" It's retarded and they know that morons like you will watch and pay retarded prices for sneakers and jerseys and get all excited over a game that is, until the later rounds of the playoffs COMPLETELY FIXED. Why do you think they get so many dunks? Because, especially up until the later rounds of the playoffs, they LET EACH OTHER DUNK, because they all know they'll make more money that way, because morons like you can't tell the difference.

The NBA is stupid. Stephen A. Smith is stupid. You're stupid. Basketball is completely stupid.

Why not put Evans in the same sentence as D.Rose, they played against each other in AAU and Evans got the better of him.

First of all, Ricky Rubio is a Spaniard not a Mexican. I'm guessing you lack a formal education as well as being homophobic.

I definitely have to agree with the fact that Rubio is all hype. He hasn't done anything significant to prove his worth. Yes, he's young and shows alot of potential but there's alot of guys out there with the same tools and don't get the same HYPE. i think the fact that he's from a continent where there are so few prospects helps tremendously...All this to say i think he will be a huge BUST anybody that's capable of playing the game at that level that they're saying is at woudl not turn down the challenge, they would WELCOME it!!! ask Lebron if he would've preferred to wait two more years before coming to the league!!!!

I like Boozer's comment cuz it's true. Look at Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Marvin Williams and many many more.

I just don't see what all the fuss is about, ooh he can pass like Havlicek, but can he take over a game and score?

Pretty Ricky aint there yet, but in two years who knows? When Serbia played half court and roughed him up at Euro Championship (1st game) he seemed lost. All this publicity will put a target on his back from PGs around the NBA. You think CP3, D-Will, Rose, Augustin, Evans, Flynn, Parker, Rondo, Nelson, Jennings are gonna let some skinny Spanish kid show them up? As of now he is the 3rd best PG on Spanish team.

On thing for sure is that Pretty Ricky will get major endorsements once he comes to USA. He's already in the USA Gillette commercial with Tiger and Jeter. He's like the missing Spanish Jonas Brother, separated at birth.

Expect millions of teenage girls from Mexico to Puerto Rico to take a sudden interest in Pretty Ricky once he does put on an NBA jersey.
