Daniels out as Pacers director of player personnel

  • Print

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—The Indiana Pacers say Mel Daniels no longer is the team’s director of player personnel.

Daniels has a long history with team president Larry Bird. He was an assistant coach for Indiana State in 1979, when Bird led the Sycamores to the national title game.

Bird said in a statement that Daniels was a “great basketball player who helped make the Pacers a well-known franchise.”

Messages left with the Pacers and at Daniels’ home were not immediately returned.

Daniels is a two-time American Basketball Association MVP who won three championships with the Pacers in the early 1970s. He has worked for the franchise since becoming an assistant coach in 1984.

Really hate the fact that we're a basketballl state (in spirit ,enthusiasm, energy)but have a kindergarden approach in managerial skills when it gets higher than high school.I thought the Bobby Knight-era had ended, how long do we have to see this in basketball?Poor managing-skills and sometimes the ones that have been managed don't realize they've been through this.Larry, don't you have enough money?

@Michael, your comments about the letters "NBA" means nothing. It's a reminder that racism is still the biggest cancer in our society & you're contributing to it.

Re: @Billy Ocean, you do have a point regarding Larry Bird running the franchise down. Since the Pacers' first NBA Finals appearence, the franchise hasn't been the same. Why is Bird still here after running the team down? Simple, HE'S AN INDIANA NATIVE STR8 OUT OF FRENCH LICK.

@COTTON PIQUER has no idea what he's talking about!! First of all people like you kill me giving Larry Bird so much credit for being coach of the year during his first year as coach of the Pacers. Obviously you've forgotten, Bird didn't build that team. It was Coach Larry Brown's team. He built that team up to what it was so all Bird did was pick up where Coach Brown left off. As for Michael Jordan not having success after his playing days?...you're sadly mistaken. Michael Jordan has had way more success than Larry Bird...think about the lifetime endorsements he has. By his second or third year in the league he was a household name. He has more championship rings than Bird. I'm not saying he was better than Bird because I respected his game eventhough I hated the Boston Celtics. Jordan was the scoring machine in Chicago when their biggest man was Orlando Woolridge...LOL...trying to play center! Please have your facts straight before you start mouthing off about Hall Of Fame players. Sportswriters like myself will eat you alive.

mel was one of my favorite players while i was growing up, what few aba games i saw, because i was at least 7 when it started & 16 when it ended, i still have visions of what it would've been like for him as well as artis gilmore & moses in their yonger days playing against the "established" players like kareem, bob lanier, sam lacey & any of the other guys who were also trying to break in & play at the time.

Mel Daniels have been around for quite some time. Perhaps it is also time for him to retire and leave the game to younger ex-players. I had the same comment about Elgin Baylor in his 70's, who is still squawking about his firing. The old ABA Pacers team, if any of you still remembered, had Roger Brown, Bob Keller, George McGinnis days playing against the old Kentucky Colonels. Mel is a good man for basketball, not a big dominating center at his 6'9" height but much more diligent as a rebounder than many of these big name centers of today. He had his own turnaround jumpers and a big smile. It's a shame for Mel to even be associated with Marquis.

#36 I bet you stayed up for months thinking of what three racist words stands for the three letters in “NBA”. You were determined to post it somewhere, even if it’s out of context and has nothing to do with the subject matter. Sheesh, ignorance is so unattractive...

Go back 2 the Burbs. Bird was NBA coach of the year, In his 1st season. Bird coached the Pacers to the NBA finals & a team ( at the time) record for wins in a season, (his 3rd).

Bird also drafted Granger & traded for Murphy & Dunleavy. Those are the Pacers 3 BEST players.
Bird also unloaded the Mental Midgets with Personality Disorders. Artest, O'Niell, Tinsley, Jackson, Harrington, Daniels ( not Mel) & Shawn Williams. Despite the almost untradeable contracts Issiah & Walsh signed them to.

MJ has ZERO success after his playing days. MJ didn't compare to Bird as a Player, & he does NOT compare to him after his playing days. Only NOW can Bird do something without the BAGGAGE left to him by Thomas & Walsh.

The Pacers continue their "whiteout" experiment as it now surges into the front office. hahaha
    JK people!

To be honest as director of player personnel he should be fired with who they have signed, developed, etc. As a Pacer fan all this will be over soon as Bird is on record as saying he is stepping down at the end of this season. Maybe now we can get a real GM in there who doesn't share MJ's management style of bad picks and spending PT hours in the office. For Bird and MJ to be so good on the court they are terrible off it. And don't even come to fans about how he was coach when Pacers we're doing good when true fans know he even admitted Dick H . and the other coaches were more influencial. And no lets not revist the glory days of Donnie Walsh since he was responsible too for the slide the last 5 years.

If Quisy can stay healthy -- and somehow manage some shooting range -- he would be a scoring machine. His sneakiness to the basket is unreal, and he's great at deflections. Keep in mind, the Pacers may look to resign him for less but I'm guessin' he'd prefer going somewhere else. He could be the missing piece for a championship caliber team. Btw, the guy's freakin' hilarious too: his favorite drink is Kool Aid!

Glad to see him go. Underachiever with the Pacers. Injury prone. Bye bye. He would have sat the bench behind Rush anyway.

LeBron will go to NY when the Knicks aquire Rubio, and Sign D-Wade and Bosh, and trade all 3, plus their first round draft picks for the next 10 years to the Cavs. That's the only way NY will ever get LeBron, because he's not leaving 30 million on the table to play in MSG.
