Mavs coach Popeye Jones charged with driving drunk

RICHARDSON, Texas (AP)—Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Popeye Jones is free on bond after being arrested on a drunken-driving charge in suburban Dallas over the weekend.

Richardson police say motorists reported a sport-utility vehicle being driven erratically Sunday night. Officers found the SUV stopped with Jones at the wheel.

Spokesman Jonathan Wakefield says Jones declined a breath test, but officers believed he was drunk. There was a minor struggle when police tried to arrest him and Jones was taken to the ground, causing minor facial cuts.

Jones is charged with driving while intoxicated. Wakefield said Monday he won’t be charged with resisting arrest.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, in an e-mail to The Associated Press, declined to say whether Jones faces any discipline.

    Havent seen the pics, but two things Im sure of...one if he was dui or dwi then he deserves whatever punishment his lawyer can plead down...two pop is 6'8" ugly as hell and probably running about 260 these days..so if Pjones gave him/them ANY amount of anything that could POSSIBLY be construed as resistance.oh they were definitely trying to put him down. It is quite possible that Mr Tx peace officer may have gotten a little exuberant in his law enforcement duties that night. If you dont believe that, ask Robbie Tolar about police in Texas. If Popeye Jones was in fact Dui then he committed a crime but that doesnt make him a "thug." Is Billy Gillespie a thug?? Is Eddie Sutton a thug?? Is Tony "Im sleepin at the light" Larussa a thug?? All coaches, all DUI, none accosted by the police, none considered thugs....

    DONE.. you idiots are fun....this is too easy...whos next??
    ps...There is no such thing as the "race card." Race always has and will always be a divisive point in this country, and even as improvements in relations are made, there will always be those who cant let go. The difference is that most of those people who are yelling about someone pulling the "race card" are members of groups who are historically RARELY discriminated against and really ahve no clue what its like on a day to day basis..and dont give me any affirmative action BS because then I will go DEFCON-5 on your candy arse and nobody wants that....

    Black, white is doesn't matter. Famous person or average joe doesn't matter. Driving drunk is driving drunk period. Police need to get the jerks off the road before they kill somebody. Think about it. The life police save may be yours!!!

    He's probably guilty as hell, but the Richardson cops absolutely suck, for the most part. Don't know that it matters if you are black or white, I'm white, and they're the rudest most condescending pricks I've ever met.

COWBOYS are STILL YOUR AMERICAS TEAM & Mavs are a GREAT ORG. How many here have never been drunk ?? Should this guy go to court & get slammed YES ........ but you cant blame all of sports on the screw ups

    1st off it wasnt Dallas, it was Richardson & I live here. The cops here are asses to everyone BUT they do do a job others dont want to do. I could care less if he was black, white or pink with purple polka dots driving while drunk is a crime & it needs to be taken to court. END OF STORY

    Just checked & also saw his police mug shot, he is defiantly black. the dallas news said police declined to charge him with resisting arrest. i'll bet the cops are defiantly white. they dropped the charges because they knew there would be a race issue. if the cops are white, we know jone resisted arrest, that should tell them right away what type of person they were dealing with, most likely. a black man trying to use the race card. should have charged him with resisting. the dallas police are going to be hearing from sharpton soon so why not nail the scum bag.
