Knicks top Maccabi 106-91 after bizarre delay

NEW YORK (AP)—NBA or Europe, regular referees or replacements, the rules are the same: Two technical fouls is an automatic ejection, and anyone ejected must leave the floor.

Maccabi Tel Aviv wanted a pass on that rule Sunday.

The New York Knicks’ 106-91 victory over the Euroleague team featured a bizarre delay in the third quarter when the visiting coach refused to leave after he was ejected.

The game was halted about 8 minutes when Pini Gershon continued to linger near Maccabi’s bench—a delay that included a rabbi trying to intervene by asking the NBA’s replacement referees calling the game to allow Gershon to stay.

“I explained that this is not a regular game and the kids are watching and (it’s) important that there will be peace and forgive him,” Rabbi Yitchak Dovid Grossman said of his discussions with the officials. “If you forgive him, I can speak to the children and say, ‘You also forgive. If you have a fight, you forgive.’ But he says this is the law, that you must obey.”

Gershon eventually left after a lengthy discussion with the referees, his assistant coaches and NBA security personnel. A security official said Gershon told them he didn’t care if the game was stopped before he eventually agreed to leave.

“He likes the crowd, the crowd likes him very much,” Maccabi’s Yaniv Green said. “They’re coming to the game to see him even more than they’re coming to see us. He’s quite a character, like you saw today.”

Nate Robinson(notes) scored 19 points, and David Lee(notes) added 14 points and 12 rebounds for New York.

Former Michigan State player Alan Anderson(notes) scored 20 points for Maccabi Tel Aviv. D’or Fischer added 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Apparently frustrated by the officiating, Maccabi picked up four technical fouls, including two on Gershon in a 53-second span of the third quarter. Strangely, the second came after he screamed at official Ben Taylor in front of his bench following an offensive foul called on the Knicks’ Al Harrington(notes).

With fans chanting “Macc-ab-i!”, Gershon didn’t seem to be listening to any of the basketball officials. Once the appeal from Grossman, founder and dean of Migdal Ohr, failed, Gershon finally exited.

“I’ve never experienced that before, but I mean there’s a first time for everything I guess,” said Robinson, who approached the Maccabi bench in an attempt to figure out what was happening.

A Maccabi official said Gershon would not comment, and the NBA is not allowing the replacement officials to comment during the preseason. The regular staff is locked out during a labor dispute.

Wilson Chandler(notes) and Harrington, back after missing the last game with a knee injury, each scored 11 points for the Knicks, who also beat the Israeli team in a 2007 exhibition. Maccabi visits the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.

The 2007 game drew the largest crowd for an exhibition at Madison Square Garden. That was a night contest, this game began at 1 p.m. EDT, a more convenient time for Maccabi’s fans overseas but it left the upper section of seats empty.

Maccabi’s roster featured Maciej Lampe, a second-round pick of the Knicks in 2003. He was traded early the next year to Phoenix, where he would later play for Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, in the deal for Stephon Marbury(notes). Lampe finished with 14 points.

Darko Milicic(notes) didn’t play for the Knicks in the second half due to an upset stomach.

Proceeds from the game will benefit Migdal Ohr, the world’s largest orphanage.

What's next. LeBron will get tossed and will not leave the court until he talks with President Obama or his buddy Jay Z sings a rap for the fans. It's getting to where you cannot watch a televised sporting event without a Jerry Springer incident.

actually Nate, (52, 53) its exactly because the guy is Jewish. Otherwise, why would the rabbi be there? Perhaps they feel they are the CHOSEN ones? Racism, or perceived racism, can sometimes be a self fulfilling prophecy

Jewish people always want to be treated better. Thats because they have the Talmud telling them that they deserve it. Others are just like farm animals, here to be milked by them. Read it- search hatred, jew talmud, sanhedrin...

The ref was 100% correct and I'm really glad he didn't allow the rabbi or anyone else to persuade him to allow the Tel Aviv coach to stay after he was initially ejected. If international teams want the air-time and extra revenue generated by playing against NBA teams, they need to follow NBA rules (and certainly shouldn't be treating NBA referees like dirt in any game, exhibition or otherwise).

Coaches at any level know they aren't supposed to berate the officials, yet the Tel Aviv coach did it anyway and got exactly what he deserved - a one-way ticket to the showers. Nice job by the ref for standing up for himself and not allowing some jerk of a coach to treat him like crap just for doing his job.

What an amazing series of events. A coach gets ejected from a CHARITY game- probably for the first time in history. Now the coach refuses to leave the court, and a Rabbi jumps into the dispute, pleading with the refs to forgive the coach. because of the kids watching the game. So the lesson for the kids is ignore the rules of the game?

I'm not Jewish, and not especially religious. Many of the commenter above are, however, acting an blatantly anti-Semitic manner. Such behavior is UNAMERICAN, # 50, 47, 41, 30 and others. Get a life and quit blaming other people for being different than you.

While I think that overseas games should be played by INTERNATIONAL RULES, both teams agreed before the start to play by NBA rules. So the home team itself should not have played the religion card. Doing that was a cheap shot, but YAHOO should cut the comments here in AMERICA of any form of hate speech.

    Grow up.

    Hi,
As a complete non-believer if all religions, I'd like to site all the negative religious based comments as further reasons why I don't believe! This is about basketball. This guy was an idiot and obviously he wanted some attention, like anyone who yells and screams when they don't get their way. These are the rules and if you really pay attention to the sport, you'll see that miscalls that changed the dynamic games can be somewhat discussed but once the official has had enough there is a line not to be crossed without concequence. There is only one inconsistancy that I've always dispised, arguing a call in hopes of getting a makeup or sympathy call in the future. Badgering officials just muddles up the game and I think players and coaches shouldn't be allowed to approach officials randomly and that a respectable avenue has to be placed for discussion but not harassment. That covers the issue and with no attempt to add faith or nationality into the mix. There are plenty of sites you can go spread hatred and bigotry, please stop choosing sports as your conduit for your personal belief in higer power. Remember that exersice in writing where you write the word or topic down where you can refer to it as much as needed to stay focused on it, try that folks. BASKETBALL
