James says winning more important than money

  • Print

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP)—LeBron James(notes) wants to be clear: Championships are more important than cash.

Not that the cash isn’t nice.

James on Monday clarified a remark he made last week in which the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar said getting a maximum contract next summer isn’t that important to him.

“Let’s get this clear: I said the max contract doesn’t mean more than winning,” James said. “I didn’t say, ‘I don’t need a max contract’ or ‘I’m not going to get a max contract.’ All I’m saying is that winning is more important to me than money at the end of the day.”

In New York for a game against the Knicks last week, James said “a max deal or anything like that doesn’t really matter to me at the end of the day. It’s all about winning for me.”

That led to speculation that James, who can opt out of his contract with the Cavaliers after this season, would be willing to play somewhere for less than the league maximum.

You have a hand full of pro athletes who play for the game; all of those that play for that reason is very few. when its all about the money it is not interesting anymore. now adays it is all about the money; big contracts or they don't play.what does that tell the average sports fan about the idolize player of theirs?

you guys need to get over that handshake error in judgement. lbj made a mistake. everyone makes mistakes and that one was pretty slight in the grand scheme of life. how about some of you who are so critical of lbj share some of your mistakes with the rest of us.
i can count only about 3 or 4 missteps over the course of his already extraordinary career. 1) he was caught speeding excessively a couple of years back. 2) he didn't shake hands when bounced from the conference finals, 3) he had his small child on the bench (during a game) a couple of years back, and 4) he went a bit far in disciplining his mother on the baseline a couple of years ago. saying that lbj threw his team under the bus by not talking to the media after losing in the conference finals(#2 above) is beyond absurd.
i have missed about 10 cavs games in the lebron era and in the 475 games or so that he has played, he could have (and possibly should have) thrown SEVERAL of his teammates under the bus in about 200 of those games, but he didn't. he has always made it a point to publicly say that the WHOLE team needs to make improvements/improve their play.
it is real easy for others to say take less when its not their money or livlihood on the line. one injury can change everything. see: grant hill, larry johnson, tracy mcgrady, antonio mcdyess, ralph sampson, bill walton, etc...

to all who think that LeBron would even consider the lakers keep this in mind.....no kobe= no phil jackson which then in turn = no lebron in LA. Face it the lakers wouldnt be close to having that kind of money available at the end of this season and kobe has at least 5 more GOOD years ahead of him....

Allow Kobe to hand you the Laker dynasty when he retires, you will have both the money and the titles.

consider their season is sucking and they might lose lebron and get nothing in return, they should trade him to the Nets. They can probably get 8 or 9 guys in return for him and then they can also make some more trades and improve the team.

Until mike Brown makes adjustments the way Rivers or PJ makes l they won't reach the elite teams. Orlando needs to find a multi layered approach to playing as well. 3 point shooting teams also lose at the hands of that game plan. What hurts Cleveland also what is hurts Orlando there not hungry and are predictable in their game plan..Lebron and Shaq.and Howard their lack of shooting profiency at the line is what also hurt them.Lebron and D.Howard both has to decide do they want a ring or do they want the accolades. They can have both like kobe and garnett or be like stockton and malone/ewing/Barkley. LWB-or Legends without Bling.Kobe has been in the league for 14 years now and each year he works on his game. The winners improve their games.Lebron and howard are great their just not elite players yet.Whether or not this is fair its true. The Bling is the Thing as in the thing that historian and fans that will measure a players worthiness for the Hall of fame.I don't know why Howard hasn't picked the brain of P.Ewing.Here is a difference between kobe and Lebron and even.Lebron was working on a movie and a book.Kobe was being tutored by Hakeem on a pivot move.

Come on you guys,PLEASE ! lets get real, Lebron is from Ohio and is loyal to his family, friends, and his team. this nonsense all started because he wore a yankee's hat to an Indians game. He is not now or never going to New York unless the Cavs do what the Indians' and Browns have done as far as their comittment to winning, and that is not going to happen. the Cavs are going to sign some free agent that most people would'nt beleive would ever come to cleveland and together with Lebron they will make history. 1st championship in any sport since 1964, 1st Basketball championship ever, multiple championships, NBA scoring champion, player of the year, MVP's, etc, etc, etc,

NBA salary differences to him doesn't make a huge differnce to his Net income per year. He makes the majority of his earnings per year through endorsements. Winning is more important for endorsements no matter what city he lives in.

Jade that was the most logical reaction all this back and forth about role model issue and lebron that i have read so far. My sister Heidi is a pediatric nurse and has to deal with infants and sickness and even death sometimes and she has found away to still be happily well adjusted.Lebron leaving his team to face the media to answer for their performance was much worse then the handshaking issue.Stan Van Gundy and all coaches and players are expected to make themselves available to talk to the media. Why is Lebron exempt from following the same rules If he chooses to be a sore loser then I would assume he will be a arrogant winner as well.He might be a millionaire and be known as king james to me he is a product and victim of his own press created image and nothing more. When he wins a ring then he is a winner.

I'm from Cleveland, and I'm a Cavs fan. But I say this Lebron to NY or where ever crap is becoming a bit of a distraction and Lebron isn't helping things by his comments and actions. If he remains uncommitted to resigning with Cleveland through this season, the Cavs should seriously consider trading him.

Annon .Unless you were apart of the lakers organization you cannot say for certain how things went down.Do you personally know kobe and what kind of person he is off the court.? To speculate about the lives of sports stars without knowing the whole story is being gullable.I wouldn't go by gossip as a reliable resources to decide what kind of person Kobe is or isn't.I As long as the Lakers organization are putting out the best products possible what they do in their personal life is their biz.Phil dates the owners daughter.Who cares.!As long as phil and jeannie Busses work ethic isn't compromised what they do is their biz.Why bring up the rape case anways.?What does that have to do with Lebron showing bad sportsmanship?.I noticed when someone brings up lebron someone brings out kobes rape case. Those are two different separate issues.IAnnon if you are going to tag kobe as a classless human being then at least be consistant .and call MJ a gambling cheating arrogant jjerk who caused his father to be murdered.

I don't think its healthy to look up to sports stars or musician and actors. There not perfect they have shortcoming. How can anyone act outraged by a behavior of a Millionaire Basketball player.?There built up by media to be gods of their perspect sports.Soldiers at war or a cop or fireman at 9-11 are heroes not famous stars of their fields. To the fans its a opportunity to appreaciate and marvel at the talents of basketball players to those who are playing the game its their livelihood.Don't ask anyone in the spotlight to be super human.Their trying to excel at their chosen field. there also human beings.Look at Jordan he proved what is wrong with sports.Jordan finally showed what happens when you're not born with humility for a God Given Talent that other people fostered and nutured. Those who save lives and protect our country daily are heroes not steroid filled baseball players or arrogant self righteous NBA millionaires.

The worst part was leaving the court and throwing his teammates under the bus for making them face the media scrutiny for losing without their leader..That was gutless.Even after losing Stan Van Gundy's team lost he took it like a man..Why should Lebron not have to live by the same rules of conduct when it comes to working in the field of proffessional sports. The Media created this King James persona.I don't like that he didn't shake hands. The problem I have that he didn't take his loosing like the rest of the players who have lost.Lebron isn't the God of the Hard wood. He's not bigger then the game.No player is bigger then game,

I agree with Annie. These men are playing a game this is their lifes work. There not playing to the subject of awe and admiration.Anyone who makes a musician or a actor and athlete a role model needs to seriously reconsider their priorities in life. Those who serve in wars defending our country is a hero. The fireman and Cops at 9-11 were heroes. My father was Harvey Korman I didn't love my father more because he was famous or wealthy. He was my father first a celebrity second. If he was the best comedian in the world thats great for his fans.I cared more about how he treated his family and friends and those in the public that inneracted with him.Lebron to NBA historians and their fans he will be known as a great player those off the court will remember how he dealt with his fame in public. My father was humbled and gracious and self Effacing about his fame.

iI don't think anyone can compare cheating on ones wife and sportsmanship on the court..Look at MJ everyone tagged him with the God of basketball. The media has build Lebron from his time in high school to now to be a Basketball god without earning it.When Lebron wins a ring then he is a winner. His petty sore loser behavior would tell you that lebron isn't a winner yet.I could say that I'm the best father in the world that doesn't make it so.The Cavaliers Franchise and anyone in the media that put the tag of king on Lebron has created a Monster with the Ego bigger then his smile. If everyone is afraid to confront Lebron with the truth then those who choose not to hold him accountable has no place to complain about his arrogant behavior.Barkley and stockton and Karl Malone are great players and are winners in life.Their just not armed with NBA Bling.Lebron might view himself as a winner in life but for those who play the game he is just another flashy guy like Dominique Wilkins and Patrick Ewing great players but not Championship caliber.
