Luke Walton gets temp gig on Lakers’ broadcasts

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP)—Injured forward Luke Walton(notes) is trading his Los Angeles Lakers jersey for a seat behind the microphone.

Walton will fill in for radio color commentator Mychal Thompson when the Lakers play Friday against Minnesota and Saturday at Utah. Thompson will miss those games because of a death in his family, the team said Tuesday.

Television color commentator Stu Lantz will miss six Lakers’ games from Dec. 11-20 while his wife recovers from surgery. “Hot” Rod Hundley, a former Lakers color commentator alongside Chick Hearn and a former player on the team, will replace Lantz.

Hundley retired from full-time broadcasting after the Utah Jazz lost to the Lakers in the first round of last spring’s playoffs. He had been the play-by-play voice of the Jazz on radio and TV for 31 seasons.

Walton has been out with a back injury after playing in the season’s first nine games. His father Bill was a longtime broadcaster and studio analyst with the Los Angeles Clippers, NBC and ESPN.

    if the Lakers keep being willing to carry dead meat (Sasha, Walton & Morrison) on the bench, it will eventually hurt them at the wrong time!

    To Terrence #91, I went to that site. I could not find anything on the top ten sports sex scandals. When you hit the link, it only talks about Tiger. If they do have Kobe as #1, I would have to disagree because everyone in the world knows Kobe did not rape that girl. It would seem they would have Tyson as #1 being that he actually was convicted and served time for rape.

    Post #30 by bc clinton is the best basketball blog so far that I have read. He knows his stuff. He appreciates Luke Walton's role, low profile but effective in a triangle system. Luke rebounds, screens, always passes the ball to an open man, and more importantly, respects both teammates and opponents. He is a class act. I had the good fortune to see his dad Bill Walton dominate the middle with his rebounding and passing ability under the venerable John Wooden. Kareem found Bill a tough nut to crack during the Portland-Lakers rivalry, the only one to do that against Kareem. If Bill didn't have his foot injury who knows how many titles he could have won?

    I'm 35 yrs old I've been a true laker fan since 78. Win or lose their my team.
    I got married in 04 the wedding theme CUSTOM LAKER JERSEYS!
    The lakers have been knocked out in the first round,some lakers fans
    may have been too young to remember,but I'm just happy that their laker
    fans too! And for the haters don't be mad because your team is not and
    may never be on their level.
