Riley: Heat standing behind troubled Beasley

  • Print

MIAMI (AP)—Michael Beasley(notes) is in daily contact with the Miami Heat and is working out under the direction of team personnel, with plans of being with the team when training camp begins later this month.

Speaking about Beasley for the first time since the 20-year-old entered a Houston rehabilitation facility last month, Heat president Pat Riley said Tuesday that he’s “confident … very confident” Beasley will have a strong season for Miami and insisted he still strongly believes in the No. 2 overall pick from the 2008 draft.

“I was told this by somebody: Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future,” Riley said. “You can’t put yourself above and beyond anybody. We all have periods where things haven’t gone our way for whatever reason, and we’ve all had an opportunity to grow. Because of what’s happened in the past, we hope there’s growth spurts for him.”

Riley could not reveal specifics about the manner of treatment Beasley is receiving, citing privacy concerns. Those close to Beasley, including his personal manager Bruce Shingler, have said repeatedly in recent weeks that they are not willing to discuss the exact details of the treatment.

Beasley checked into the Houston facility sometime around Aug. 20. A series of posts on his Twitter account raised many concerns about his well-being, including one entry that said “I feel like the whole world is against me I can’t win for losin.”

Several Heat teammates offered their support quickly through Twitter posts and reaching out to those in Beasley’s circle. Riley said Dwyane Wade(notes), the team’s best player and the NBA’s reigning scoring champion, was among the first Miami players to send Beasley a message.

“I’m not going to forgive anybody’s transgressions just merely because they’re 20 years old,” Riley said. “I think when you become a professional basketball player, a lot of things come at you a lot quicker than normal. There’s a lot of things you may be able to handle or not handle.”

Beasley finished his rookie season as Miami’s second-leading scorer behind Wade, averaging 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds. The Heat plan for this season include using Beasley at both small forward and power forward, and Riley said that hasn’t changed even though Beasley hasn’t been around teammates for several weeks.

Riley said Beasley had between 21 and 28 workouts earlier this summer at the team facility with other members of the Heat’s young core, including Daequan Cook(notes) and Mario Chalmers(notes). Getting into 4-on-4 or 5-on-5 games in Houston, however, has been impossible, Riley said.

“He could be a major factor for our team,” Riley said. “I’m going to continue to show that kind of belief and faith in him.”

NOTES: Riley doesn’t expect Wade to decide on whether to accept a contract extension with Miami until July, which is not surprising considering Wade has indicated several times that he will exercise his right to opt out of his current deal at the end of the 2009-10 season. … With 13 players under contract, Riley reiterated that the Heat—who are already about $3 million into the luxury tax threshold—will only add a player through a trade or if someone is willing to accept a non-guaranteed contract.

Bease, is going to be alright. Glad that he is getting the help he need. The heat has a nice team. But not a championship.

Wow never anything positive to say. Never stay focused on the original article. I guess this is the place to vent all your hatred towards the opposite race. We really have to stop stereotyping other cultures. It's pathetic. Beasley I wish you good luck on your recovery process for whatever it is your dealing with.

Other than that go LAKERS, COWBOYS, ANGELS AND BUCANEERS!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Chaddly, Post 46: You cannot dispute the lack of intelligence and upbringing of these NBA idiots. You are a typical liberal Democrat that will personally attack a person if you disagree with his opinions and facts. Look Chaddly, take your same sex partner out for either some fried chicken or grits and pork, whichever you desire. You are the typical NBA Blogger from either the inner city or the corn field.

Why do these post go from sport related to the color of ones skin, political views or where they come from. Mr common sence you should think before you type. You make yourself look like a idiot let alone a racist. It is funny how you get on someone about what they say and what remarks they make only to do the same thing. You need to grow up and shut up.You make whites look bad. Now that I think about it you make the human race look bad. Instead if giving advice you should take your own. Follow your own 8 little steps and do us all a favor and add one more.

    9. STFU tool.

Good luck Beasley. Lakers in 2010!

I think that Pat Riley is a stand up guy. But all you Beasley supporters should man up: The guy is a fruitcake, like Vince Young and Jay Cutler. They all lack education and brain matter. Not nice to say but you cannot change the behavior of these morons.

Love conquers hate, but it won't win a NBA championship lets get that straight. And D-Wade has had all that love and got eliminated in the first round. So, love, keep love in the bedroom and let's talk basketball already. Pat Riley has lost his mind. he's really starting to light a flame under D-Wade with moves like this. Riley needs more veteran winners on the court. Why he didn't go after Vince Carter is ridiculous. There were others, like Ron Artest. Riley is sticking the same ol players and D-Wade cannot be happy about that. Tough love aint gonna keep D-wAde around.

PAT RILEY HAS LOST IT. HE DOESN'T WANT TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP AND HE'S REALLY PLAYING WITH WADE. Just like Al DAVis in the NFL had success back when, Riley is right in that man's footsteps. BAD decisions for years to come for Miami. RILEY IS PUTTING HIS CHIPS INTO BEASLEY??? Since Beasley has been in the NBA, he's been nothing more than a Bonzi Wells, a guy who plays a role. THIS ATTENTION MUST MEAN THAT WADE IS GONE NEXT YEAR.

Beasley was a great college player, that's where his greatness ends. In the nba he is a role player. The heat threw away a great chance to draft a geat player and fell for all the college hype. Now look, smoking weed, depressed, and for what. He is young ,rich and talented,go figure.

Arien C, Post 37: You need to address your anger management issues. All that hate and rage. Aspiring to get out of the ghetto and live in the hills, watch Nascar, and drink Bud is quite a dream for you. Do this: In your ghetto neighborhood, go through your low life ass in fromt of a buss, sue Cleveland and retire to your Nascar dream world.

Riley has no choice but to believe in Beasley bec. besides for Wade, everybody on that team sucks, including Beasley. Beasley will never live up to his expectations, he doesn't play a definite position and he doesn't do one particular thing extremely well, he's an average player, definitely not a starter. Wade will leave Miami unless he doesn't care too much about winning a championship and wants to keep living it up in Miami

    mr common sense...
i kinew it, i knew if i questioned your position and intelligence you would assume i was a black inner city "ghetto" kid as you call me....ok, i'm white (A) (B) i've never been to cleveland, in fact i was raised in the couttry, listening to coutry music, watching nascar, shooting guns and drinking buds...my parents have been married for 37 years,
so, mr uncommon sense: how does all this fit into your little pre-conceived notions that you think people that disagree with your hateful remarks are from inner city cleveland and are black...you just suck...you can make fun of my grammer...i don't give a rats arse, does it look like i care?
to midas webley- maybe jeff was a nice guy...but i hated that whole team with a passion, and that whole face petting thing at the ft line got under my skin

i just dont understand. he is a millionaire. he has enough money to buy any car, yacht, plane, whatever he wants. cant he find something a little more productive to do with his time than smoking weed? he's a great player, but like a lot of them, he doesn't use his head and takes the NBA for granted.

Hey Carlo, Post 28: Got to you didn't I. You Puerto Rican grease balls all get so upset. You cannot afford to take any of this personally! It is only a blog. I love to take controversial positions and see the idiots make fool based remarks (like you). You always blame whity and the republicans first, because of the brain washing done in the inner city ghettos. Personally, I question whether of not people in the ghetto can be brain washed. TO BE BRAIN WASHED, YOU FIRST MUST HAVE A BRAIN.

One thing for sure, Carlo, If I ever need a brain transplant - I want yours since IT HAS NEVER BEEN USED!
