Hardaway’s No. 10 retired by Heat

  • Print

MIAMI (AP)—Saying he was “overwhelmed,” Tim Hardaway beamed Wednesday night as he watched his No. 10 jersey raised to the rafters by the Miami Heat, never to be worn again.

With about 50 family and friends looking on, including the other two parts of the famed “Run TMC” trio—Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin—that he first captured NBA acclaim with, Hardaway’s oversized jersey was hoisted skyward before Miami opened its season against the New York Knicks.

“Tonight, I stand before you truly humble and grateful,” Hardaway said.

Hardaway had hugs for everybody—players, coaches, even referee Joe Crawford(notes), no small feat considering how much the player loved to clash with officials during his playing days.

Before he came to Miami, only three other players had worn No. 10: Kelvin Upshaw, Clinton Wheeler and Manute Bol. No one had since Hardaway left the Heat in 2001.

“Obviously, well deserved,” Mullin said. “Tim is one of the best players of his time.”

His is the second Heat jersey to be retired: Alonzo Mourning’s(notes) No. 33 was hoisted last season.

“It’s another great moment,” Heat president Pat Riley said. “I would say from the year 2006 until now, we’ve had a couple of incredible moments. Both of them are hanging from the rafters, our world championship banner that we’re so proud of—and there’s more of those in store for the future—and of course Alonzo Mourning last year, one of the anchors of this franchise.”

Hardaway is still the Heat career leader in 3-point field goals and assists, ranks fifth in points and steals, and is 10th in regular-season games played.

“His contributions helped build a successful championship franchise,” Mourning said.

The Heat presented Hardaway with a $50,000 check for his foundation, plus kept the Mullin and Richmond part of the night secret until the ceremony.

“To see him and Alonzo’s numbers up there in the rafters, I’m very proud of him,” Richmond said. “He deserves it.”

Tim, my fav point guard growing up!!!! man was fearless and would kill anyone with his quick first step or embarress any player with a simple yet effective crossover.. too bad bulls and rockets ran the decade.. but timmy definitely deserves his jersey up there.. too bad for the damn acl..

I have been an avid fan of the NBA and two out of three players I admire the most played for the Heat. One is Alonzo Mourning and the other one is Tim Hardaway. The last player among the three that I thought would play for the Heat in the past is Charles Barkley; unfortunately the proposed deal did not push through. I am so happy for Tim and Zo, their contributions to the league were felt the most during the times they spent in Heat uniforms and not with their previous teams. Team Hardaway, your back court greatness will always be remembered…

I don't know what was said about the gay thing. But all you who comment about hating gays and it's wrong are part of the reason our planet is falling apart. Hate is an despicable emotion. What is you had a son or daughter who happened to be gay, would you have them. You need to learn tolerance. That's what Christ taught. From a straight non-Christian Humanist.

I 'm happy for Tim, as far as comments about anything or anyone, and who gets offended, i like to offend some people in the face with my "FIST" or better yet send there asses to IRAQ and leave 'um there like some "nightmare on elm street" episode. Got too many panzziesyssies in this country, always complaining, while our guys r dying over there; yeah for once I agree, lets bring our guys home, and send the left, maddow's, oberman's, mathews's, so called civil rights monger's, talk show rev's and all u panzzies to IRAQ and leave um there; we got to cleanup this country, send'um home -- to "ROOST"!!!!!

Homosexuality is WRONG. Period. I think Tim Hardaway's comments were harsh and unnecessary, but it's not that big of a deal.

One of my fav all time players - love the heat and loved Zo and Tim tearing it up in the 90's. Tim had a swagger that was unmatched on the court - a real little b@lltearer.
Much props to Mitch Richmond as well - he was a beast in his day.

pat riley compared hardaway to magic often in terms of how they ran the offense. obviously, tim wasn't 6'9" and never played with kareem or worthy, but still a hell of a player.

alonzo quit on the nets after they dealt for him so that he could get "retire" and go play for a team he liked. not exactly a class act.

4dx: No one is calling for Tim Hardaway to be recalled in the same breath with Jordan, Magic and Bird. Hardaway was a stellar player for many memorable years on the Miami Heat. His jersey is getting retired by the Miami Heat not the NBA. Whining that Pippen's jersey isn't retired in Chicago is not Hardaways nor a Miami Heat problem- Take it up with Bulls Mgmnt.

Props to Timmy. A well deserved honor for any long time Heat fan to see. Haters need whine.

So what if he hates gay people.... Ok, he has a right to his own opinion. He probably should have kept his feelings to himself... but he has that right. What did that have to do with what he had done in basketball? His accomplishments with his team is still recognized and his stats are still there, so why treat him as if he don't deserve anything because of a statement he made 3 yrs. ago. How long is he supposed to pay for that statement? It's what wrong with this world today. We hold grudges for things we can not change. Forgive, forget, and move on! Congrats Tim.... Best of everything!

honestly being gay is TRULY WRONG. His statements were right, just harsh. It was a poor decision to air out his thoughts being he worked in corporate america. Shoulda kept his mouth shut. But good to see him getting recognition because he was a great player.

Wow I read a lot of comments but people tend to forget everyone is entitled to an opinion. Jersey retirement is based on the professional level of basketball skillz an he definitely had skillz Congratulation should be in order for one of the greatest point guards to play in the nba. REMEMBER this is the same person who gave up his starting all-star spot for Magic Johnson when he first back from the virus episode. Stats tell everything and he had amazing stats for a 6-foot point guard He was a joy to watch so congratulations Mr. Hardaway
