Grizzlies officially waive Iverson

  • Print

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—The Memphis Grizzlies officially have ended their relationship with Allen Iverson(notes) by waiving the 10-time All-Star.

The Grizzlies announced Monday they had mutually agreed to end a one-year contract with the former league MVP.

But the team did not waive Iverson until late Tuesday afternoon.

Iverson began an indefinite leave of absence on Nov. 7 to deal with a personal issue. The 34-year-old guard played only three games with Memphis, all in California. He averaged 12.3 points and 22.3 minutes coming off the bench in each.

AI always wants to perform a man show on court. That's why no team wants him.

Go AI, We love you and we will support you all the time... We missed you playing on the court. I will be a fan of any team you choosed to play with... You still have a lot of guns to fire.... Play as starter you deserved to be..

Lack of a point guard Chester? Are you watching the same Houston Rockets I am? I believe Brooks put up 33 points against LA on Sunday night. He has been the facilitator of this Rocket team. AI would kill the chemistry. There is no way I'd take AI on my team.

    It's ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOCKETS BALL!

I live in Memphis but the Lakers have been my team since I was 10, long before Memphis even thought about getting a pro team, ok I just had to mention that because people always ask about that. I think Iverson should've waited because he was going to get a starting position eventually. Iverson is so impatient, he can't just come in and take someone's position like he thinks he should, he's a great player but it doesn't work that way. I just hope he get's they opportunity to play again, it may take a while because he has done this to many times. I hope his career is not over because of his own ways that he's stuck in.

If A.I. is head and shoulders above Conley by the end of the season, Memphis needs to draft another guard. A.I. is NOT the answer for the Houston Rockets, because last season in the playoffs, they were playing team basketball. Iverson will not allow them to do that, which would stagnate the team and individual players growth..., he was a very good player, but some of the success he lacked was due to his style being a lot about him. It could have been more about the team. I personally liked I. Thomas game better than Iverson's!

A.I. would fit in good with the Houston Rockets. Their lack of a point guard would enable him to finish out his career. While Brooks and Lowry take note.

Had A.I kept his mouth shout got in top shape and played to his potential he would have been starting within 15 games because he is still heads and shoulder above Mike Conley and you could not have kept him on the bench while the team continued to lose. They would have lost close to the same amount of games but would have been entertaining and sold tickets which was the main reason he was signed to start with.

Interesting comments @isom some of it is true and makes sense but there are some flaws to a couple of your other statements. Honestly though my biggest beef is with your statement on Iverson's relationship with his former coach Larry Brown

Your Statement -- "Players that outgrew their selfishness long enough to win championships Michael Jordan and Coby."
Spelled Kobe, not Coby. And when the Chicago Bulls were winning their championships, there was no way Michael Jordan was taking a back seat to anyone, and there is no way Michael Jordan would have willingly come off the bench during that run. Iverson has averaged 6.7 assists a game over the course of his career, that's not bad for a selfish guy.

Your Statement -- "The coach that left Philadelphia and went to Detroit when Allen Iverson was in Philadelphia. They but heads all the time over practice and the owners allowed Iverson to basically run over their head coach. He won two championships with Detroit. Why ? because Detroit won as a team."
    What's Wrong?
The Coach, Larry Brown, and Allen Iverson did butt heads in the beginning, but they turned that around and both came to very much mutually respect each other, and both will say now that they loved working with each other. Larry Brown and Iverson spoke very high of each other during their finals run and when Iverson won the MVP. So did Iverson run over the head coach? No he did not. Did Larry Brown win two championships in Detroit, no he did not. He only won one championship with Detroit and that was in 2004.

You're wrong, Iverson wouldn't come off the bench even if it was for the Lakers. That would probably make him want to start even more actually. Simply put, unless he's starting, he's not going to want to play. That's just how he is, and that's why only teams like Memphis and Charlotte are offering him contracts.

i understand AI wanting to win - wanting to play but he fails to understand that as a professional on the side of 30, he should have set an example about putting the team above oneself.

he was injured early on, missed pre-season and was slowly integrated into the team.

it was just no excuse for him to yap about playing time 3 games early in the season not to mention just coming back from injury.

i have no respect for the guy. sure an awesome baller but he hasn't gotten off that streetball rep.

he belongs to the AND1 videos.

one would thought that at a certain age he'd grown, mellowed and matured into a veteran leader and perhaps posting a legacy.

it's sad to see him go and relegate himself to a petulant child.

Yo i love AI we cant judge him on his short comings as a human being but his numbers dont lie.
F you all i would love to have him join the lake show where he would come of the bench. Which i dont think he would mind because when kobe gets his breather the floor would be his. No reason AI and fisher cant split pt both aged vetrans. Plus you put AI under the coaching of phil jackson gonna turn him around quick, Plus the potential of finally playing for a ring i think would put him in check aswell.

wow, how funny that Marcus f seems to do his homework on stats when he's trying to tear down A.I'S professionalism to playing bball, I wonder if anyone ever offered him a contract? Hmmmmm didn't think so; he spends to much time trying to rain on other's parade, why don't you do yourself a favor, record your best a-game present it to some coaches and see if they'll SIGN you on!
