Clips’ broadcasters suspended for Haddadi remarks

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Clippers longtime play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler and color analyst Michael Smith were suspended one game by the Fox Sports Prime Ticket cable network for their comments about Memphis center Hamed Haddadi(notes).

Lawler and Smith made their off-the-cuff comments about the Iranian-born center during Wednesday night’s telecast from Memphis. The on-air banter offended a viewer who e-mailed Fox to complain.

The duo did not work Friday’s night telecast against the Denver Nuggets at Staples Center. Michael Eaves and Don MacLean, who regularly serve as halftime and postgame analysts on the Clippers telecasts, substituted for Lawler and Smith at courtside.

“That’s unfortunate. It was pretty strange not seeing them there,” Clippers point guard Baron Davis(notes) said after the 106-99 victory. “Ralph and Mike are very classy guys, and they didn’t do it to hurt anyone.

“A lot of times when you’re commenting on games, it’s a source of entertainment. And a lot of times, people may take offense. But the viewers need to understand that it’s entertainment, and people are entitled to their opinion. I stand by Ralph and Mike because they’re great guys and they only want to support and help everybody in the league.”

Lawler, 71, is in his 31st season doing Clippers games, and Smith is in his 12th. Lawler has surpassed 2,400 regular season and playoff Clippers broadcasts in his career, according to the team’s Web site.

“We regret the remarks made by Clippers announcers Michael Smith and Ralph Lawler during Wednesday’s telecast,” Fox said in a statement about 2 1/2 hours before the game. “While we believe that Michael and Ralph did not intend their exchange to be offensive, the comments were inappropriate.

“We extend our apologies to Hamed Haddadi of the Memphis Grizzlies and to anyone who was offended. We have addressed the situation with Michael and Ralph and have taken appropriate action.”

The Clippers did not comment.

The transcript of the conversation between Lawler and Smith, which occurred late in the game, was printed on the Los Angeles Times’ Web site:

Smith: “Look who’s in.”

Lawler: “Hamed Haddadi. Where’s he from?”

Smith: “He’s the first Iranian to play in the NBA.” (Smith pronounced Iranian as “Eye-ranian,” a pronunciation that offended the viewer who complained.)

Lawler: “There aren’t any Iranian players in the NBA,” repeating Smith’s mispronunciation.

Smith: “He’s the only one.”

Lawler: “He’s from Iran?”

Smith: “I guess so.”

Lawler: “That Iran?”

Smith: “Yes.”

Lawler: “The real Iran?”

Smith: “Yes.”

Lawler: “Wow. Haddadi that’s H-A-D-D-A-D-I.”

Smith: “You’re sure it’s not Borat’s older brother?”

Smith: “If they ever make a movie about Haddadi, I’m going to get Sacha Baron Cohen to play the part.”

Lawler: “Here’s Haddadi. Nice little back-door pass. I guess those Iranians can pass the ball.”

Smith: “Especially the post players.

Lawler: “I don’t know about their guards.”

I was in the military and I feel it is stupid to even discuss this!! people from Iran are raised different from Americans, So how can anyone have an opinion when they are just ignorant? Stop being sensitive and if you are an Iranian and you live in America just seriously shut your damn mouth or open it with your own joke back because we gave you that right if you live here.

Post 57. Read my post again. I didn't say Iran didn't have its problems, every country does. You're missing the point. This isn't about Iran, it's about a basketball player and thats it. Plain and simple be professional, if not then get suspended, thats what happened here right? Post 70 says its best.....what happened to turning the channel if you don't like what you're hearing? Keep the politics out of it.

I was watching the telecast and thought Lawler and Smith were just making a very small joke about the fact that Haddadi was the first Iranian to play in the NBA and he bares more than a passing resemblance to Sasha Baron Cohen.

PC run amok! No wonder Army personnel thought twice about reporting an Islamic radical who voiced some really bad muslim rhetoric.

    PC is getting us killed.

Its coming down to it... Christians vs muslims... Let the war begin, simple God fearing people who understand only what is told that they must understand by idiots pretending to be some sort of link to heaven... Losers, but you can see that in all the disorder that they have in that part of the world. Tolerance to those who only believe as I do... Stupid, Stupid and Stupid.

We need to NUKE that part of the world to clean up the mess that is being created by a backward peoples...

More power to the two who spoke as they are allowed to do in our great country. This country lead by an ignorant president is going down the toilet, as you can see with the suspension...

Yeah Hate Me, But you have all along anyway, right?

A few years ago they made fun of Chris Kaman's hair and no one complained. I don't think these guys have an evil bone in their bodies and were just doing the normal, entertaining commentary, the thing that makes the Clippers games viewable.

It's too bad they weren't on hand to see the great victory over Denver. Their comments weren't even close to being offensive. I laughed out loud when I read the transcript. If they get suspended, then Sasha Baron Cohen should be put in jail.

EYE-run???? EYE-ran???? It's ee-ran, ee-qypt, ee-raq !!! Another case of American "intelectuals changing how a foreign place is pronouced. --- Peking was "created" because Americans could not pronounce "Beijing." ABU-GRAIB is ABU-GRAH-eeb not ABU-greyb.
If you ask the native -- they would say any pronounciation is okay (because they don't care how you pronounce things -- or they don't want to offend -- that's their culture).

Ralph & Mike are great, even when the Clips are getting their butt kicked they are always funny & entertaining. It should take much more than "one" compliant for them to be suspended.

Come on ! Really now ? While I understand the political sensitivity between the U.S. and Iran currently, can you "really" translate Lawler's and Smith's dialogue as harsh towards the Iranian community as a whole ? This wasn't of the mode of Jimmy the Greek or Howard Cosell "..Look at that monkey run !" or "..Black people are build differently... !" - this was harmless comedic commentary, perhaps a bit politically incorrect, but to warrant suspension without a simple warning ? Perhaps an apology by Fox and said announcer, but this ?

I agree with a previous poster, what if a sportscaster says "...Rudy "Gay" has a soft touch... ! Would gay people demand the announcers suspension ? This is getting more and more surreal to me.

#55 and 56....Obviously, you are not American. You have absolutely nothing to say regarding this American matter. You both are cowards!

You Iranian muslims believe and trust in allah so much that you have to leave your country? Where is the trust in good old allah?
What about stealing and cheating to obtain American benefits? I thought your little allah was your provider?

Bunch of ass clowns with a silly religion you are.

How is pronouncing an I incorrect? It sounds like eye. Whatever, maybe a little too much emphasis on the vowel, but who really cares? The guy is getting paid decently,. If Eye were in the NBA, I could honestly care less what people say about me. I would enjoy playing a fun sport, making a few million, and move on. things are said about our own citizens, look how Madsen got ragged on for his dancing skills after the Lakes won earlier this decade. Dances like a white guy. whatever, this is absolutely a non-issue. these guys are just trying to keep the commentating going.

Has Fox News commented on what Fox Sports did? I would think Fox gives bonuses for offending Iranians. (Or maybe a night off from covering the Clips is a reward? Oh, but they beat the Nuggets! Too bad they missed a rare win.)

Ironically, I think the suspension is drawing more heat and unwanted attention to Fox and the unnecessary remarks -- whether or not people find them offensive. Who would care this much if they had just apologized to the viewer, or had the announcers apologize on air the next game?
