Celtics’ Garnett itching to return after surgery

  • Print

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP)—The wait is almost over for Kevin Garnett(notes).

After leading the Celtics to their 17th championship in 2008, Garnett suffered a right knee injury last year that led to surgery to remove bone spurs in late May. He could only sit and watch as Boston lost to Orlando in the second round of the playoffs.

“It wasn’t pleasant for me at all to watch,” Garnett said Monday as the Celtics met the media before Tuesday’s official opening of training camp. “None of the basketball we played that I had to sit and watch was pleasant for me. I did it. I sat on the side because my teammates wanted me to sit on the bench, but other than that it was pretty excruciating.”

Garnett is back. He’s done all the rehab work, listened to what the medical people have told him and says he is playing without pain.

“I’m excited, man. I’m excited,” he said.

When Garnett was able to join his teammates on the practice floor for an informal 5-on-5 game last week, he turned another corner.

“No setbacks,” he said of his work coming back, adding he was “almost 100 percent and going forward.”

“Better than anything, I’m playing without any pain, which is something that I haven’t had for quite some time now, so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Garnett said that scrimmage last week left him “huffing and puffing.” But, he added, “It’s like riding a bike; it comes back to you.”

“I feel pretty good,” he said. “I don’t like to take time off. But it was for good reasons. My leg is right on schedule to where it’s supposed to be and mentally I’m refreshed. I think everybody is.

“I think the fact of how we got ousted last year against Orlando is still fresh in our minds and I’m sure (coach) Doc (Rivers) is going to use that for some motivational tips this year throughout the year. Other than that, I think everybody here is pretty much ready to go.”

Garnett is an intense competitor who has played all 82 games in four NBA seasons and 81 in three others. He missed 25 regular-season games last year before sitting out the playoffs.

He returns to a team that on paper appears to be better than the one he left. Leon Powe(notes) has departed (to Cleveland, which also signed Shaquille O’Neal(notes)) via free agency, but the Celtics made a major move by signing veteran big man Rasheed Wallace(notes), formerly the leader of the rival Detroit Pistons.

The Celtics also re-signed free agent Glen Davis(notes).

On Monday, as Garnett joined fellow Celtics stars Paul Pierce(notes) and Ray Allen(notes) to meet the media, Pierce said “it was like a breath of fresh air” when Garnett showed up last week to play in that scrimmage.

“I can’t even describe it,” he said.

Allen noted: “The teams that beat us, the team that won the championship (the Lakers), we want that feeling back.”

Said Garnett: “I think last year did one thing for us. If anything, it humbled us. It showed team is everything, not one or two players can get things done. I’m eager to see how we come in, our minds and how we all are, in camp.”

The Celtics have their 17 championship banners hanging on the walls at their practice facility. There is an 18th banner hanging, but it’s blank.

“I don’t know where that came from. It’s just there,” Rivers said. “That’s all I’m going to say. The players will know the meaning. Obviously, it’s an obvious meaning. … I’ll just leave it at that.”

Rivers wouldn’t admit hanging it.

“It’s just there,” he said. “Red (late Celtics patriarch Auerbach) did it. Blame it on Red.”

The Lakers were minus Bynum and Ariza vs the Celtics and the reffs get it right Laker fan now we got Artest and a more healthy Bynum to play with. Depending on Kobes hunger to get another title the Lakers will win next years title and it doesnt matter who we play................pre fer the Celtics so we can shut all of Bostons mouth............No Leon Powe, Posey, Brown, and Cassel who all played key in beating a Ariza less and Bynum less Lakers team who still put up 2 wins should have been 3 @home...................Boston ...........dont count on it your really not that good!

pathetic - we live in an age where you need 5 all stars (superstars even) to win a championship.... gone are days when teams have a superstar, an all star, and couple of decent role players.....

last of all where was farmar, sasha, bynum, odom, derrick and ariza at times, thoughout the playoffs?? the last three had some good games here and there. gasol, kobe, brown, were the most consistant on the team. thats y lamar had a hard time getting signe this off season not just cuz it was luxury taxes they were signing him for but u never kno who u gonna get night in night out with him. but thats the way he's been his whole career an that y miami let him go the first part of his career. i kno we can say the same about ray allen the last two years but for the most part of it has been cuz he's a jump shooter playing extended minutes which takes a toll on his legs. he'll be fine this season with the bench back in shape he'll have more rest for the legs. that really goes for all players.boston will have about a 10-11 man rotation for sure and still got room to sign one more if needed and wont match up with bostons height with wallace 6'11 baby 6'9 scal 6'9 williams 6'9 daniel 6'6. starters kg 6'11 perk6'10 pual 6'7 ray 6'6. other than odom 6'10 and josh powell 6'9 no one else is over 6'7 execpt luke walton and sasha.

wut i am wondering is how effective gasol willl be since he hasnt took a break and played in europe the whole off season. how much effect will this be on this season.. he didnt give his body no time to heal and we all kno how grueling the NBA is espeically if u playing in june by that time u reached 100 games. resting is key to repeating.

first off it was LA that had the christmas day circled cause of the last game they had lost by 38??????? remember. As for beating the celtic with ease u outta ur mind. KG had missed the games prior to LA on christmas because of the flu not an excuse just trying to get it right for ya and it was won by 9 and that game couldve went either way. broke boston 19 game win streak .when they played in febuary it went to overtime LA won by 1 point and ray allen missed the go ahead shot to win. both those games LA was dominated by boston in the paint which was wut we saw in the finals. celtics weakest point was the bench and thats where LA had advantages. broke bostons 12 game win streak. yeah both teams were in good health but only one team had a complete bench and that was LA. boston tried to fix that by allstar break with no luck of adding mikkie moore (good intensity but is foul prone) and marbury. niether one worked out then they lost KG, scalibrine, powe in the first round. yeah imma boston fan but i tell it like it is when the season started and that bench changed and LA was said the team to beat i agreed but i said boston was champs til they are completly out. With that said clearly boston has made the best addtions of the off season. Artest comes as an upgrade but at a sacrifice of loosing chemistry giving up ariza i wouldnt be suprised if they trade him back for ariza. ron needs the ball in his hands to be effective u saw that when they play in the playoffs this move may hurt the offense since they already got one guy who will disrupt the offense. it takes alot to sacrifice shot attempt when u have these caliber allstars come together

Terror Squad I hope your not sugesting Bynum or Ariza is anywhere near the caliber player KG is!! Yes I'm a Celtic fan but Im a basketball fan too. I keep it real and give props where their deserved. I hate the Lakers as celtic fan but I appreciate how great they are as a team and organization. Kobe is the best player on the planet and you now have another both ends monster in Ron Ron, Pau, Odom, Bynum should be better. IYou guys are stacked. But don't say the Celtics suck, makes you look like a @#$% retard. If everyone stays healthy it will be Lakers and Celtics in the finals and it will go 7. Who will win depends on what team executes the best. Time will tell, but keep it real dude.

I've got to agree with you Sully A. I'm a Lakers fan but I cringe when I see some of the comments that these so called Lakers fans write. I think a lot of these idiots are actually Raiders fans that have jumped on the Laker's bandwagon. I guess I should cut the Celtic fans some slack since the Celtic idiots that post on this site are no more representative of all Celtic fans than are the Laker idiots that post here too. Just because some Celtic fans and some of their players are clueless morons doesn't mean they all are.

I for one am glad I won't have to watch Garnett make a total ass of himself from the bench. Every time the cam pointed his way he was making idiotic grimaces. I used to like him as a player, but I just didn't know he was so stupid and unsportsmanlike.

Last year the Celtics were talking chit all year just like they are now. After the Lakers beat them Christmas day they vowed things would be different when they played in Boston. They talked for months about how they were looking forward to that game and how they had an off game on Christmas. They talked about how they were going to show the Lakers the true Championship Celtic team when they played at home. They claimed to be disappointed when they found out the Lakers would be missing Andrew Bynum again and how they wanted the Lakers at full strength. They even rested up KG for the two games before they played the Lakers because this was going to be the biggest game of the year for them. All Talk, the Lakers beat them with ease in Boston.
Rasheed Wallace is a great pick up for them and they should be one of the top teams in the league but the competition as also improved both in the east and west and the bottom line is, the Celtics have yet to show that they can beat a healthy Laker squad. I don't think Celtic fans realize how fortunate they were to win the Championship in 2008 and how unlikely it is that things will fall into place just right in the near future. Hopefully all the playoff teams will stay healthy this year and whoever eventually wins it all will have earned it legitimately.

God there's some @#$%s in these blogs. Lakers fans and Cavs fans are the biggest of them. What do you just haunt blogs so you can write smack about other teams or players and crap like "lakers4life" or "LBJ MVP". I enjoy the Lakers but you guys are idiots. Also get an education and use proper grammar. To the people who control these blogs is there any way you can screen these idiots.
