Cavs’ West faces more weapons charges in Maryland

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West(notes) was indicted Tuesday on additional weapons and traffic charges stemming from his Sept. 17 arrest for speeding on a motorcycle and carrying multiple weapons.

The eight-count indictment sheds no new light on why West, 26, was riding a motorcycle on the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County, Md., at 10 p.m. with two loaded handguns and a loaded shotgun. Prosecutors on Wednesday added an 8 1/2 -inch Bowie knife to the list of concealed weapons West was carrying.

It’s illegal in Maryland to carry concealed weapons and to transport loaded handguns.

West was indicted on two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of carrying a handgun, two counts of transporting a handgun, and one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving. The charges are all misdemeanors. Each weapons count carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.

West was initially charged with just two counts of carrying a handgun and with driving in excess of reasonable and prudent speed.

Court records don’t list a lawyer for West. His agent, Noah Croom, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

West has been treated in the past for bipolar disorder, and last week his wife filed a domestic violence report against him in Ohio. No charges have been filed.

West, who could still face a league suspension over the charges in Maryland, made his season debut during Saturday night’s 90-79 win against Charlotte, scoring 13 points in 24 minutes. He was expected to play in Tuesday night’s game against Washington.

Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry, who along with team doctors has been handling West’s delicate state on a daily basis, issued a statement following the release of the new charges against West.

“It is our understanding that today’s developments are part of the legal process that continues to take place with Delonte and he and his legal counsel will handle that,” Ferry said. “We will continue to take this matter very seriously and monitor and respect the legal process as it proceeds, but not speculate or comment about it.”

Cavs coach Mike Brown didn’t want to speculate on the possibility of West doing jail time.

“I believe in the process, I’m going to let it unfold and go from there,” Brown said.

After the arrest, West reported to training camp on time but missed the team’s first four practices without an excuse. He returned, but then left the team for a week to deal with personal matters. He missed all eight preseason games and Cleveland’s first three regular-season games.

West, who lives in Brandywine, Md., was riding a three-wheel motorcycle when he cut off a police officer on the beltway in Upper Marlboro, authorities said. The officer pulled him over, and the weapons were discovered.

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey said West will likely be arraigned by the end of the week, and the case could go to trial early next year.

AP Sports Writer Tom Withers in Cleveland contributed to this report.

i like delonte but what was he thinking? even if he's bipolar, Cleveland should have a bit more control over their players and their actions (and they are my favorite team)obviously something's wrong with West when he knowingly cuts off a cop with all that heat on him. i wish him the best though

Hey Bulldog. In Florida you can take a Law Enforcement class at any local community college. It's the same training that you would get at an academy. O'neal went to this and is a qualified LEO in the state of florida. With regards to him being a LEO in the state of Ohio is concerned, well that's easy. All he would have to do is challenge the academy requirements. Take and pass a series of exams and he would be eligible to be a LEO in the state. There you have it

That's not the point PEOPLE... David Stern, the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers are condoning behavior that is criminal in nature, meaning that as KIDS admire, respect, and aspire to be NBA players they see a double standard that goes against the rules (laws) set for society. Cavs should have immediately suspended him until the case was resolved, the NBA should've done the same. No question that Delonte needs help but "being off his meds" doesn't mean he gets a free pass to act out. He still has a responsibility to all the children who aspire to play in the league, and so does the NBA and each respective team. As soon as there's an indictement there should be immediate suspension from the team and league. That action would send a strong message to the youth on actions that would not be tolerated by the league. It doesn't mean Delonte is a criminal, but if indicted on felony charges then you don't get to play in the millionaires boy's club until cleared of the charges.... pretty simple, but seems like the team and league are more supportive of getting the "W" in the short-term. Sad.

Hey, I was also wondering if that worthless ONeal arrested him :) Isn't he some kind of deputy or something in Cleveland ? Why in the hell would anyone let him be an officer..just another pile of sh*t wanting all the attention. Why didn't he have to go through an academy ?? I don't think he went through an acadamy in Miami either. By law, he hasn't gotten the proper training. See what I said, we couldn't just go up and say I want to be a deputy. Seperate rules and laws for those in sports, hollywood, politics and music. I don't believe he has any law degree's, does he ?

Just another punk thug using a medical condition to get out of breaking the law. Just like all the crimanials in sports and in hollywood, as well as musicians, nothing will ever come of it. They all have different laws then the common man...they get away with murder, rape, sexual assault, using steriod and drugs, domestic violence, manslaughter, drunk driving and breaking every other law there is. And why is he still plating ??? Why isn't he behind bars like you and I would be ?? It's pathetic to say the least. All these individuals who do the crime, should do the time, no matter if they are in politics, sports, music or hollywood. They all get off with a " don't do it again". Then in a few weeks, they are at it again. Then the country wonders what's wrong with todays youth....I will tell you, it's all these losers who think that the law doesn't apply to them and hardly ever have to spend time behind bars, that's the problem. How many times can you even break company policy and keep your job and even get huge bonuses for it ? NONE !!!

Smart people or non convicts might get pulled over with a few guns or whatever but they would NOT be loaded so who was he going to kill. and for the morons who think rap music makes you killer there would be a hell of a lot more dead people don't be such racists and make the stupid pay for there crimes.

Why do people still not know how to correctly spell "loser?" For every correct "loser," there are 10 "loosers." If basketball players are "loosers," does that mean they are the opposite of "tighters?" In all sports, isn't being loose a positive thing, as opposed to being tight? But anyway, I digress...

Eric H, our resident Yahoo! doctor, claims that bipolar disorder is nothing more than an excuse for holding on to the past and not letting go of the anger. Our dearest Eric H, a bit of advice: please stay in school, or at the very least, go back to school. Learn how to educate yourself on topics you know absolutely nothing about before ever speaking or writing again. It will do you so much good to not look like an ignorant moron in front of the entire world. Now, turn off the PS3, go back to your PC, and Google "Bipolar Disorder."

Delonte has a medical issue. He should still be judged by the local courts for what he did wrong. But people don't need to bash the guy, especially when they have no idea what his mental state may be like while going through these bi-polar episodes. Hopefully he gets treatment soon and can serve whatever judgement goes against him and then get back in the game. He doesn't fit the bill to be called a "thug"- all you haters and black robe-wearing perfectionists out there!
