Mike Brown will leave Cavs’ West on bench

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP)—Delonte West(notes) sat under the basket after practice on Monday chatting with teammates. Cleveland’s troubled star was expected to face reporters for the first time since taking two leaves of absence during training camp and missing the Cavaliers’ first three games.

Instead, he quietly slipped through the door and out of the building.

He wasn’t ready yet.

West has already shown he’s good to go on the court, and coach Mike Brown isn’t placing restrictions on him, although Brown won’t start West on Tuesday night against Washington.

“I’m not worried about his minutes if he’s active,” Brown said. “There’s no coddling or anything like that. If he can play, he’s going to play.”

West made his debut for the Cleveland Cavaliers during Saturday night’s 90-79 win against Charlotte, scoring 13 points in 24 minutes.

It was a turbulent offseason for West, who has battled bipolar syndrome. He could still face a league suspension for misdemeanor weapons charges against him in Maryland. Last week, his wife filed a domestic violence report against him.

Brown said Monday he is “definitely going to go with what we have right now,” meaning Anthony Parker(notes) will continue to start and West will continue to come off the bench.

“I’d like to take a look and see how we’re going to play right now,” Brown said. “Only time will tell, but I’m definitely going to go with what we have right now, the way we have our starting five.”

West started 64 games for the Cavaliers last season and averaged 42 minutes in the playoffs, when Cleveland was eliminated by Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals. West can play either guard position and evolved into the team’s second-most important player behind LeBron James(notes).

The Cavaliers are 2-2 after opening the season with losses to Boston and Toronto. Brown and James both cautioned during the preseason that Cleveland could get off to a shaky start until West’s situation was resolved and the new faces blended with the old.

After one week, that’s already happening.

“Having (West) back is huge,” guard Mo Williams(notes) said. “He had a great game when he came back. As a team, you see sparks where we can be elite. Then you also see times where we can improve.”

Throughout the preseason, Brown referred to West’s situation as a day-by-day process. Now that West has been cleared and has rejoined the team, Brown isn’t anticipating further setbacks.

“He’s here just as much as LeBron is here or Shaq or Mo,” Brown said. “There is nothing special or different I’m thinking about doing with Delonte. In terms of all that other stuff, I don’t even think about it.”

First of all Michael can you have someone proofread your comments before you post them, please buddy. It takes me like half an hour to read thru your gibberish. I really hope you're not past sixth grade because then "no child left behind" must have looked past you.

Second of all you tard monkey, don't use the argument that it only took Kobe 3 seasons to win a championship, he wasn't even the best player on the team, Shaq won the Finals MVP ALL THREE TIMES.

Third of all, how long did it take Kobe in win a regular season MVP? How long did it take James? Yeah you're probably not going to answer that one.

    Fourth of all, GED.

What a bunch of BS Micheal. Kobe got his in 3 seasons, why is that- Shaq plain and simple, it was Shaq that was MVP 3 times in the finals not Kobe. Robert Horry and Sam Cassel won rings in their 1srt year does that make them better than Kobe, because thats what you are saying. Lebron has had little help lets be honest just like MJ had little help, once the right pieces click then the championships will come its just the reality of it hes that good. Im a fan of basketball not a Lebron fan but the guy is the real deal and sorry lakers fans Kobes MVPs are done while Lebron is playing

Brandon and the rest of you poll heads...labron's going on 7 seasons..no ring, took m.j 8 seasons...kobe got his in 3 seasons and is a 4 time n.b.a champion and for real for real the best player in the n.b.a...labron has no "d" he cant dribble and his shot is not one to count on,remember he passed the ball 2 seasons straight.dont go with the hype because l.b is over rated just watch the kid play and when he looses he runs off the court like a cry baby.when they were sweeping under 500 teams in the playoff he was mr.light the fire but when them magic boys blew out his weak flame he was bitter.l.b leaves cleveland oh well,he wont get a ring in new york and thats a fact..lakers back2back ...ha ha ha lames....

look delonte does this every training camp. It's always something, when he has nothing to do or focus on he drifts and get in trouble. Once he has basketball back in his life, he will be the delonte we know and love. He might be a huge pot-head but on the court he works extremely hard.

    Go Delonte Go Cavs!!

He's supposed to be a professional. If he misses the 1st practice, that's unprofessional behavior and he should be canned. It's not the coach's responsibility to care about his mental state. If he doesn't go to work, get rid of him.

blake B hit the nail on the head. They do not look like a championship caliber team. All that crap that goes on outside the gym will have a negitive effect on them. And by the way, isnt this his last year? He does have a condo in NYC... In other words, Lakers win back to back titles.

First off #61 comment by 'Che Fred is totally race driven & ignorant. Most of the players in the NBA are college graduates & make more money than you will ever see in your pathetic, miserable life. You are so jealous that you can never be on these players level of success that you will do just about do anything to fuel your rascist driven rage. The rich & the poor all have problems dealing with life, but you have to come to chat rooms & post rascist comments like a true coward. You speak of all the things that you wish you could do, like travel & not worry about finances. But your hatred causes you to speak negatively about youths trying to leave the ghetto behind, why does that bother you so much? Is it that you want them to stay where they where & not improve in life? Your life will always be mediocre until you learn to love the way that Jesus loves us all!

This is an ominous sign to the start of the season.
Shaq is not a difference maker. The collection of journeymen they've surrounded LeBron with are not good enough to make it to the promised land. Their coach is still Mike Brown and it's still the city of Cleveland. Is there any reason for LeBron to stay?

    Back on topic...
Hopefully Delonte is doing ok, if he needs to leave the team to get better he should. Who knows what is going on in his head, if basketball is helping or hurting him at this point. If he needs to step away from the game then you can't really blame him.
