Ilgauskas hints retirement could come soon

  • Print

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP)—Once March arrives, Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes) knows his legs will throb and his feet will ache.

The West Coast trips, the games on consecutive nights and the grind of a long NBA season that—if all goes well—will include two months of playoffs has Ilgauskas wondering if perhaps this season will be his last.

“I think I still have at least a few good years of basketball left in me, it’s whether I would like to do it,” the Cleveland Cavaliers center said on Friday. “It gets hard every year mentally and physically. We’ve been playing long seasons the last few years. It all stacks up.”

Ilgauskas, 34, is entering the final year of his contract after spending his entire 11-year career with the Cavaliers.

While Cleveland is primed for another deep run into the postseason, huge questions loom beyond this year.

Shaquille O’Neal(notes) is in the final year of his contract and LeBron James(notes) could opt for free agency, particularly if the Cavaliers again fall short of an NBA championship. Should James leave, O’Neal would likely follow him out the door.

Ilgauskas wouldn’t say how much James’ decision will affect his, but he acknowledged he is not interested in another rebuilding project—the Cavaliers missed the playoffs in seven of his first eight years in the league.

“But this team is far away from rebuilding,” he said.

Ilgauskas enters the season handling a pair of new roles, father and bench player. He and his wife, Jennifer, adopted a pair of brothers from an orphanage in Ilgauskas’ hometown in Lithuania. Around that time, the Cavaliers acquired O’Neal in a trade with the Phoenix Suns, relegating Ilgauskas to the bench for the first time in his career.

The move could benefit both aging centers. O’Neal, 37, is entering his 18th season.

Neither has ever had such a capable complement. The two have combined for 14 All-Star games, nearly 38,000 points and more than 14,000 rebounds during the regular season.

“I don’t look at it as taking Z’s spot,” O’Neal said. “I look at it as us working together. Me and him on the same team, we are the best centers in the NBA.”

Ilgauskas’ name surfaced this week in trade rumors, something he dismisses since he has been traded “75, no, 77 times since I’ve been here,” he joked. “I would like obviously to stay here, but this is a business. If it comes or not, I’ll deal with it. I’ve expressed my desire always to stay with this team, especially now when we have a chance to win.”

Coach Mike Brown said again on Friday he plans to pick his spots to play Ilgauskas and O’Neal together, hopefully creating matchup nightmares for defenses trying to defend a pair of 7-footers. It could leave the Cavaliers slow on defense, though, and defense is what Brown has emphasized since taking over four years ago.

“It’ll be deadly because they won’t be able to double both of us,” O’Neal said. “We’ll have two big guys on the boards and Z is a great shooter. He can spread the floor out. If his guy is worrying about what I’m doing, I’ll kick it to him and he’s going to shoot. If he misses, I’ll get the rebound. It’ll be fun at times.”

Given his frame and his game, Brown believes Ilgauskas could hang around for at least five more years.

“Z could play as long as he wants. I think 7-footers, especially guys that have skill, can play forever,” Brown said. “There have been a lot of 7-footers who have played into their late 30s and even early 40s. You can’t coach size or teach size. They’re going to be big whether they move slow or slower.”

Ilgauskas hasn’t officially decided on his future, but he’s mulling his options.

“The grind gets tougher and tougher each year,” he said. “A younger guy is able to recover and bounce back faster. Once you get older, it’s not happening for you.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do. I guess I’ll see how this season goes and how I feel at the end. I’ll decide at the end of the year if I feel like playing and what the opportunities are … I’d love to finish here.”

#41, Alexander...I know you won't see this comment but what's your malfunction son? That guy was just saying that Z is an upstanding citizen and has a good track record. It's like saying "the best son on the world..." Idiot? You're a jacka$$ dude. Stockton was a flopper just like Malone and Sloan coaches them these dirty tactics. They might all be good folks but give me a break IDIOT, they are no better than Z. Reggie...well, he's class. Might not have been THE guy that could carry them to a ring, but wth, the guy played his heart out until he couldn't hack it and had some damn good seasons in his career. But so has Z. He's been solid and steady. Just what you want in a center if you can't have Hakeem or Kareem. Z is Hakeem's Otis Thorpe...solid, stead, shows up every night and you don't hear about him beating his wife, feuding with other stars or bad mouthing teammates and coaches. He could be an a$$hat in real life but for all intents and purposes he seems like a model giant citizen.

being a laker fan, I was glad to see shaq go for one reason and one reason only, shaq was out for himself before the team, he purposely waited to have his toe operation untill a few weeks before training camp so he would miss the beginning of the regualr season, he wanted to have the summer off.! After 1999-2000, his conditioning was terrible and you could see it with his injurires.
Right around all-star break, he would start training and we would have him fresh for the title run
good luck lebron, after the initial hype the real shaq will show, slow, no offensive moves to speak of other than backing down, mediocre rebounding for his size, and lousey one on one D, Garrnet and Howard will have field days. Other than that good luck Cleveland!

alright already, raise up off of BIG ZEE. he will do what he thinks is good for the club and himself. yes ZEE might be slow but he does still have scoring skills, and can still be a key piece in a lot of things the Cavaliers will be doing. so roll on big ZEE roll on.

I'd be happier for Z getting a ring, than anyone else on the team should it happen. Z has been a warrior for the Cavaliers and truly is one of the top Cavalier players in the franchise history... not only stat wise, but the leadership he's brought over the years and what he does in the community off the court. Z may not have always been the most talented Cavs player on the court, but he defines what an NBA player SHOULD be to his team. I will be sad to see him retire, but truly hope he goes out a Cavalier.

i love some of the comments about "Z". I've never seen many complimentary posts than this article. Sure you have some haters (drama queens) out there but as far a "Z" goes, he's a total class act. Doesn't care about the headlines, and his loyalty to the team is far better than most any player.

Whoever said "get ready for a free throw party", did you see Z's free throw percentatge last year? Better look it up.

Lebroid should learn from " z " ,, to be humble , loyal and not too ambitious
without dunking in basketball , i say " z " is on the top 5 centers in the nba
if not injured before ,, he might be the best .
i saw you in person z - man . i am just 10 feet away from you . you look so humble
and very professional . i did not see any arrogance in you .

No matter what anyone on here says about LBJ and Shaq, I hope you can all respect Z. The man has passed up more money from other teams to stay faithful to the Cavs. He's also continuously been a class act on the court and off, shown by the fact that he just adopted 2 kids. So lets put the trash talk away or at least keep in your back pocket for a forum about Shaq (although I would say don't use it for Shaq either, this guy profits on attention whether its good or bad, lets not let him by just ignoring him).

    It don't matter.
This is the Spurs year anyway.
I hope Shaq, Z and LBJ all skip out after San Antonio embarrasses em all.
The only way I'd root for the Cavs would be if they were facing the Lakers in the finals. And that ain't likely.
