LeBron, Cavs battling flu

  • Print

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP)—LeBron James(notes) didn’t get any sympathy from his teammates when he came back to work after spending two days sick in bed.

They ran the other way.

“You come back around and everyone is like, ‘Ugh, you got the cooties,”’ James said Thursday. “They don’t want to be around you.”

James and two Cleveland teammates have tested positive for Influenza A, and are being treated as if they have the H1N1 virus by the Cavaliers, who are being proactive in dealing with a flu bug that already has sickened six players.

H1N1, also known as swine flu, is a strain of Influenza A, and though the Cavaliers have not gotten back H1N1 test results on James, Darnell Jackson(notes) or Coby Karl(notes), the team is treating all its players and the traveling party to Texas with medication to fight the virus.

Team physician Dr. Alfred Cianflocco met with the team at Cleveland Clinic Courts to discuss preventive measures on how to stop the flu from spreading.

“We feel very comfortable and confident that what we are doing is an appropriate course of action,” Cavs spokesman Tad Carper said. “The key for us is to approach things proactively and from a presumptive standpoint.”

James, Jackson and Karl were tested for H1N1 at the Cleveland Clinic. Carper did not know when the results will be known. All three players missed Wednesday’s exhibition against Washington but are traveling with the Cavs for preseason games in San Antonio on Friday and Dallas on Saturday. James believes he will be able to play in one of the games.

Forward J.J. Hickson(notes) and guard Andre Barrett(notes) are not making the Texas trip.

Jackson said the flu hit him hard. He had a high fever and slept 22 straight hours.

“I can’t remember ever being that sick,” he said.

James was still congested as he talked about having to spend the past two days lying in bed. He said he drank over a gallon of water each day.

“I think I’m over it now,” he said.

James believes he may have gotten the flu from the shot he and his teammates got recently to fight the virus. He said his two young sons have not shown any symptoms of being sick.

The flu bug has been a minor disruption for Cleveland’s training camp, which is winding down as the club prepares for its Oct. 27 season opener against Boston.

“If it’s going to happen, now is the best time,” James said. “I don’t wish anyone to be sick. I wish great health for everyone. But if this is the time the flu bug is going to hit our team, I’m glad it’s happening now.”

Cavs guard Delonte West(notes), who has spent time away from the club this month while dealing with personal and legal issues, traveled with the team to Texas. West is being treated for bipolar disorder and has pending misdemeanor weapons charges after he was arrested in Maryland carrying three loaded guns.

If you have a healthy immune system, you CAN''T get the flu from a flu vaccine! I get soooooo tired of hearing that!

Heather, dont waste your time on someone who don't have NO SENSE AT ALL. Anyway all this Media Coverage about H1N1 is getting everyone in a uproar. Media needs to stay out of Hospitals and let the Ones recover from this Virus. To All the fans who are on here. You need to worry about Yourselves and wash your hands. Stay clean, get your Flu Shots and don't forget to Clean,Spray your Key Boards on your Computers. Don't be worried about your Favorite Player. That NBA will take care of them. Prayer is the Best Medicine.

I know it is silly to respond to some of these ignorant posts, but for the record, I was born and raised in Cleveland i can say it is a great city. Rich with culture, music (the cleveland orchestra is one of the best in the world. The Cleveland Clinic is one of the world's best hospitals for heart care among others. We love our sports and live and die with our teams here. We are very passionate and quite loyal. The city has its good and bad areas as most cities do, but to truly know the City of Cleveland is to love the city. And to Common Sense, i was wondering when you were going to submit a post that contains even a shred of common sense within. So lets go Cavs!! get well soon Lebron and Co. .... Peace :)

Hope the Cavs get better. They are going to make the season interesting.

Wow the media really controls the public knowledge on a flut shot. If James got a flu shot for H1N1 he likely will not get H1N1 but he could easily get any other influenza strain. If he got a basic flu shot he could easily get the H1N1 virus. There are so many different strains of the influenze virus that the flu shot really only protects you from the worst strain from the previous year, as that is the one you are most likely to get. Remember influenza is a virus not a disease so influenza continually mutates into different strains in an attempt to attack the human immune system. The vaccine is only ever useful against a specific influenza strain not the "flu". So some of you are right "yes you can't get the flu from the shot" but....

The flu vaccine can actually weaken the immune system and make you more predisposed to an illness.

The flu vaccine, whether in the shot or nasal form, in my opinion should be avoided. Not only are they loaded with toxic chemicals including mercury and aluminum, and increase your chances to get Alzheimer's many people come down with the flu shortly after receiving the shot. This is because it actually weakens the immune system, making the person more predisposed to an illness. Being athletes and always being in close proximity to people they generally have a weaker immune system from travelling to constantly exercising.

We all know shaq will implode after 1 month of the season and when the temperature in Cleveland is 0 degrees. There, a post relevant to the article. Peace.

Hey, Mr. Common Sense: I didn't realize that some of these comments were so stupid as to necessitate being removed from the thread. Pardon my ignorance. Again, this has NOTHING to do with the strength of an argument.

As for the rest of your post, I'm not a Cavaliers fan, just someone who reads the news. However, this is the first time anyone has called me something like "ghetto rat." I'm more of a ballerina girl. Thanks for the description, though; I feel flattered that you find me so "cool."
