Former rivals Bird, Magic now co-authors

  • Print

Larry Bird doesn’t understand what all the fuss was about. So what if LeBron James(notes) didn’t shake hands with the Orlando Magic after his Cleveland Cavaliers lost in the Eastern Conference finals?

“When basketball is over you live the rest of your life, and you’ll have plenty of time for that,” Bird said of players being friends with their opponents.

His greatest rival—and now one of his greatest friends—agreed.

“We never shook each others’ hands,” Magic Johnson said.

The two Hall of Famers—their names forever linked—have now written a book together. “When the Game Was Ours,” written with Jackie MacMullan, is due out Wednesday.

They said they were tired of other players, coaches and reporters writing about what the two were supposedly thinking during their many showdowns.

“What better way to do it than to do it together?” Johnson said Monday on a conference call with Bird. “We’ve been through so many great moments—most of the time against each other—special moments, and just being friends as well.

“I think it’s a unique situation that two guys who were all about winning and all about playing the game the right way—who had a chance to change the game at the time and take the game to another level—are able to write a book together.”

They said they talk only a few times a year, but when they do, they could talk for hours.

The two first bonded while shooting a Converse commercial together in Bird’s hometown of French Lick, Ind. They learned how much they had in common—two Midwestern kids from strong families of modest means.

Not that the encounter softened their rivalry.

“I disliked the guy,” Johnson said. “I hated the guy—because I knew he could beat me.”

do you know what it is to paraphrase someone?

How much clearer does it have to be?...one of your Boston legends thinks it doesn't matter and a Laker legend agrees....
I have no idea how high school sports operate where you live, but in Ohio it isn't a suggestion...you do it or you sit the next game...in ALL team sports...
And just what was with your holier than thou Ray Allen with the elbow to Varejao's nutz last year....I'm sure his momma was proud of that

You need to stop acting like you know everything and just talk about basketball...you have far to much hate in you toward someone who doesn't even know you exist to be even the least bit rational

cavslandrocks... The first sentence of this article was written by Rachel Cohen of the associated press. The legends weren't commenting on Lebron in general so don't jump to conclusions and get all giddy. In high school, even after losing, your taught to shake hands or at least fist bump the opposition out of respect. Lebron, the bigger than life athlete that he thinks he is, was too sour to shake hands. Trust me I've had some bitter loses back in my days in high school, but still had the courtesy to shake the opponents hand. Its something thats taught in all levels of sport. Still what Lebron did was not excusable, and then after the fact he proceeded to wear an "LBJ MVP" shirt. He is very egotistical, that he himself thinks is larger than life. Thats why I would never have any child see him as a role model. If there is any NBA player I would want as a role model it would be Ray Allen or Chauncey Billups. Allen, who doesn't drink mind you, houses his mother in Boston with him. He has never had any off court issues and is one of the hardest workers in the sport. Billups, who was turned down by many teams in the draft, has been shipped around from team to team because they didn't think he was good enough. He has proceeded to work hard and earn himself a championship ring and the label as one of the most clutch players in the league.

finally!! a couple of legends weigh in on the non story that never ends....why am I not surprised at how they feel about it?
and Shazamm..these guys are NOT role models unless YOU as a parent encourage your kids to treat them as such...YOU are the one who is supposed to teach YOUR children values

Charles C. You know nothing about basketball talent. They were two of the greatest ever by anyones measure that knows anything about the game. By the way, they were right about Thomas, he is scum. Why do you think he was thrown out of NY?

Sour grapes. Be a man and face the fact that your opposition was better than you on that given day. Even boxers that beat the hell out of each other, greet each other after the fight.

that's what i call collaboration in the highest order. it's a good story to tell how 2 fierce sports rivals will collaborate to write a book about their lives as players, competitors and secret of their success. sharing their thoughts to the public in their own words is something that you feel good about the two of them. magic and bird are true sportsman that elevated the game of basketball to where it is now.

Obviously the issue with Lebron got blown up by media, but that doesn't mean it wasn't an issue. He's a role model in a sport with many child fans and he should know that good sportsmanship is important for them.

what do you know that magic and bird would write a book together because neither on of them can write one on their own. they have to make sure they get all their lies together and to make sure they both diss thomas. i for one don't believe johnson has hiv because if the meds is helping him why ain't the meds helping other people with hiv. bird has destroyed the pacers with his stupidity and thinking he is smart enough to build a winner which has happened since he fired thomas as coach. he traded away their best player in o neal and all they got now is granger i am sure he will leave when the time is near.

Most clear thinking people realize that the whole situation with Lebron was overblown by the media. Of course all the Lebron haters seized upon it, but it was much ado about nothing, and most Pro athletes agree.
