Knee infection sidelines Celtics' Pierce
Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce(notes) is expected to be out at least two weeks after having a minor procedure on his right knee on Wednesday.
Pierce underwent a 20-minute arthroscopic irrigation to drain and clean his knee because of an infection. Pierce was diagnosed with the infection after Tuesday’s victory over the Indiana Pacers, during which he missed his first 10 shots and seven free throws.
Celtics president Danny Ainge told Yahoo! Sports there was no structural damage to Pierce’s knee.
“You’re always concerned when someone is hurt,” Ainge said. “But hopefully, they took care of it and it’s all done. …We expect Paul to be fine.
“It anybody’s guess when he will return. I don’t know. Maybe sooner rather than later.”
Boston activated forward Bill Walker(notes) from its Development League affiliate. Ainge said he was uncertain who would start in place of Pierce. The Celtics are also without forward Glen Davis(notes), who is expected to return soon, and guard Marquis Daniels(notes) because of injuries.
Ainge seemed more optimistic about Kevin Garnett(notes). Garnett didn’t play against the Pacers because of a right thigh bruise, but is a game-time decision for the Celtics’ Christmas Day meeting with the Orlando Magic. Ainge said Garnett, whose 2008-09 season was cut short by a knee injury, was upset about not being cleared to play against Indiana and is itching to return.
