Ball Don't Lie - NBA

NBA science tells us there must be at least 0.3 seconds left on the game clock for a team to successfully get off a jump shot. (Yes, the Trent Tucker rule.) If there's less time on the clock, you can only score on a tip or alley-oop. (Unless, of course, you're playing in Atlanta. HIYO!)

Well, guess what? Jason Kapono laughs in the face of science! Observe:

Impressive. But the LA Times is right: until someone beats .2 seconds, there is no real need to change the rulebook. Then again, is there any harm in changing the clock to measure in hundredths of a second instead of tenths? I don't think so. Make it happen, Stern.

Skeets, here's the problem. There's still an official scorekeeper who has to start the clock. Human visual reaction time varies between .25 and .4 seconds (that's including the time it takes to move your finger and press whatever button). So once we get past ~.3 seconds, the variability in RT is enough to cover up whatever increased precision there is in the clock. If they found a way to put a sensor in the ball that could be turned on when the ball is inbounded and then signal when it is touched, that might allow for what you suggest.

Jerry Miculek makes the best arguement for eliminating the ruling all together.
Jerry holds several Intenational records for speed shooting with a revolver.
He placed 6 shots in 3 targets in 1 second. Yes, they use an auto timer to start and stop the clocks. He also emptied a revolver twice, reloading between empties in 2.99 seconds.
Officials ruling on their "opinions" are useless.
