Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Just a quick congratulations to "future NBA champion" — you heard it here first — Julius Hodge for landing himself a much-deserved training camp spot with the New Jersey Nets. Hodge, via his HoopsHype blog, reports:

The third point guard spot is the one I'm definitely looking to fill. The two guys ahead of me in the depth chart, Devin Harris and Keyon Dooling, have been like big brothers for me here lately. You learn a lot from them just from watching, but also playing against them is a good thing. [...]

This training camp is going to be a little different for me. With the Nuggets, I was the young, excited and impressionable new guy. Now I'm more mature and more prepared. And although I know this time around I know I have nothing guaranteed, I'm not nervous. I'm hungry. And when you're hungry, what do you do? You eat. That's my mindset. That's what you learn growing up in the NYC playgrounds.

Hodge's "contract" is obviously non-guaranteed, but there is no doubt in my mind that he'll lock up the Nets' third point guard during training camp. He's just too good not to, especially with that Paul Bunyan-sized spirit.

(Thanks to BDL reader Colin for the heads up.)

Skeets... Why such a hard on for this guy (besides him being a blogger) In the past he had some good upside, but he was a total bust for Denver and one that still stings given the Nuggets' long standing need for a long shooter. Clarify if you may, cause I know you love him and his bullet hole, just can't understand why

Dillon -- Hodge saw, what, 60, 70 minutes in Denver? You can't judge anyone on that limited about of burn. (Anywhere else he saw minutes -- NC, NBDL, Australia -- he dominated the comp.) I mean, sure, that jumper is a little suspect, but he more than makes up for it with his passion for the game. Watch him, he's fearless. I know it sounds really, really odd, but I've always seen a little D-Wade in him. I'm positive he'll find his way into the rotation of a successful NBA team.

I was lucky enough to get to watch Julius play for my team in the last Australian NBL season. Before he arrived (about 2/3 of the way through the season) they were a rabble, but he more or less put the team on his back and inspired them on a run that almost took them into the playoffs, during which there were wins over some of the best teams in the league, as well as a narrow loss to the eventual champions.
The amount of passion he showed for a team that he only joined mid season was amazing to see, and I am glad that I had an opportunity to watch the man play here.
It would be great to see him succeed in making it back into the NBA.

Yeah, Hodge. One of the most inspiring stories in contemporary professional basketball. He deserves any success he attains.

I hope Julius Hodge will be signed up by the Nets for the next season.
He fully deserves it. The position where he can do best is point guard, though, because of his size,
he has been used mostly at the 2 or 3 spots. Besides his passion for the game and winner mind-set, he
brings leadership, great floor vision and passing skills, plus an above average (for a guard) rebounding ability.
    Good luck, Jules!
