Ball Don't Lie - NBA

All season, Agent Zero had been the indestructible item for these Wizards.

Gilbert Arenas never stopped scoring, never stopped talking, never stopped believing he'd have the final shot, the final word on Washington's season.

Without warning, Arenas has gone down for the season with a tear in his right knee -- within just 72 hours of Caron Butler breaking his shooting hand.

Arenas is a big believer in karma, and it will haunt him the way that Charlotte forward Gerald Wallace fell on his leg Wednesday night at the Verizon Center after Arenas had been benched at the start for a late arrival to a morning shootaround. He was expected to have surgery on Thursday.

In a whisper, the Wizards' season has been reduced to rubble. They're 39-35, slotted as the sixth seed in the East, and you have to wonder if, without its two All-Stars, Washington will win more than a couple of games the rest of the way. The Raptors are waiting in the playoffs, a once-intriguing series that suddenly has the makings of a sweep.

Such a shame. The Wizards had been the toast of Washington D.C. this season, a run that inspired an NBA renaissance in one of the league's longest suffering and relentlessly loyal markets. They had gone into a late-season swoon, but there was still some belief, some hope, that the Wizards could get past some frontcourt injuries and make a run in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Just a season ago, the Wizards took the Cavaliers to six games in a first-round series. They had hopes of advancing this postseason, what with the way that this franchise was developing under coach Eddie Jordan. Now, it's all fallen apart. Now, it promises to be a long summer of "What ifs?"

Most of all, Arenas, who averaged 28.5 points, had been a blast this season.

He went on that wild scoring spree in December, dropping 60 points on the Lakers and then 54 on the Suns and bringing the league some silliness, some perspective, to a sport where too many stars take themselves far too seriously. He hosted a million-dollar 25th birthday party for himself in downtown D.C., made bold proclamations on his blog and took a dare from Shaq at the All-Star game to do one of those acrobatic dunks off a trampoline during a timeout.

Here it is, April, and Agent Zero has signed off far too soon.

These playoffs promise far fewer laughs now, far less fun.

Doesn't matter. Agent Zero and Washington would have been eliminated first round by the Raptors. You may have missed out on Gilbert talking for 4 games, and going home with nothing.

Arenas is great to watch but I really question that comment about DC being a loyal market. In the 2005 playoffs between the Heat and the Wiz, I had extra tickets for games 3 and 4 in DC which the scalpers didn't even ask me a price for. The arena wasn't even full for either game. DC fans are pathetic when it comes to basketball. Hopefully my Heat take the 3 seed so I can watch Miami whip the Wiz's sorry butts.

Scalpers gave tickets for free? That's a bunch of crap.

Dear Gilbert Arenas aka East Coast Assassin aka Agent Zero aka Hibachi aka Gilly (My roommate and I call him that)
This guy was phenomenal this season. He proved to many second round draft picks of how you can be a leader in the NBA. Another perfect example is Michael Redd (also a second round pick), he is also proving himself to be a leader in the Bucks.
Hibachi continued to talk the talk, but he always kept his word (maybe not versus Portland, but for Washington as an overall NBA franchise). Most of our NBA fans are in love with the verteran all-stars, such as Lebron James, Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant. However, we should respect Gilbert. Yes, he trash talks outside of the basketball, but have you seen ANY wizards game? He plays every game like its his last, just like Kevin Garnett. When its time to ball, hibachi will become the leader for his teams.
I saw the replay for his injury with gerald wallace landing on his knee. It is very unfortunate because this was the season where Gilbert would have shined in the playoffs. Without Caron and Gilbert, I think Jamison will have to become the temporary vocal leader to help Wizards atleast get through the first round of playoffs.
But hey, don't give up on Gilbert because he has a big heart for basketball. You never know, he might come back in a month with him working hard at rehab.

I guess I need to clarify - the scalpers did not want to purchase my tickets at all (they literally waved me away) cause it wasn't worth their time to try and sell upper level tickets. If it wasn't "celebrity" lower level seats, they knew there was no market for them. The pre-game crowds outside the arena were pathetically small. I should have given the tickets to some homeless guys and let them show some hometown pride.

It would have been interesting to see what the Wizard's could have done if they went into the playoffs healthy, but with the crew they have now, they will be lucky to win more than a game in the playoffs (maybe two the rest of the regular season). I'm just glad that Gilbert has made it cool to be a Wizard's fan again for the past three years. I have followed the Wiz for nearly thirty years and I, like many Wizard's fans, endured season after season of pathetic basketball until Gilbert came to town. Good luck with your recovery Gil. Get well soon.

"just some pathetic loser who's lucky that his heat are in first place because of caron's INJURIES"
Are you serious? And the Wizzies were in first place because of the Heat's injuries, and ONLY because of that. If Shaq and Wade hadn't missed almost half of this season's games, how far do you think the Wizzies would be behind Miami in the standings? Get real dude. If Shaq and Wade had been together the whole season, you could count on your Wizzies to be about 10 games back right now, regardless of Caron's injury. Oh, and one more thing: HEAT = defending NBA Champion (that means WINNER, not pathetic loser)

What a heart-breaker. I'm going to majorly miss him until I see him back out on the basketball court, not only as a Wizards fan but as a person who takes a great deal of amusement from his antics.
It just won't be a fun without ya, Gil.

Arenas is a great player, and he has proven himself this season. I guess he shoud have some rest because even if he was to play, they would not have made it deep in the playoffs, anyway.
Yes, as an individual athlet, he could be fun to watch.

Thanks & congratulations to the Black President for an emphatic season. The Buzzer Beaters, high-scoring games especially against the Lakers & the Suns, small pranks, throwin jersey out in to the crowd, waving his hands to tell ppl that the hibachi grill is hot, i just love it all. Very unfortunate injury. Get well soon Mr. Clutch. You may not know, If Antawn Jamison & the rest of the team could step up their game and pull it off to beat the challenging Raptors, you might expect agent zero on floors after that. He is a hardcore basketball fan himself, he plays with passion, so he might not like to see the sad wizards fans lookin out every wiz games without the real hero(arenas). Hope he gets well soon & give us all a treat in the second round provided if hibachi-less wizards could make it to the second round.

the meaning of the comment about the scalpers not even wanting extra tickets was pretty clear the first time. The guy making the nasty comment totally missed the point and probably didn't deserve the reposting you afforded him. I commend you. All in all, being a Warrior fan and watching Gilbert break out so beautifully for the Wizards was a little bittersweet, but nice to see. Watching him as a college player when Arizona came to town, it was apparent that at least the players knew who should have the ball in his hands at crunch time. It was always Gilbert Arenas.

Oh this is awesome! When I heard Arenas was gone for the season I was just waiting for the first Wiz fan to start talking trash about how well they would've done in the race for the SE conference crown if not for these untimely injuries. Forgetting of course what Miami has had to endure for the whole season. The only good things about the Wiz are Gilbert (awesome, real heart and funny) and Caron (ex-HEAT player who I wish we still had). Everything else about the team stinks. Eddie George can't seem to maintain discipline over this team. (I can just hear it - Please, please play defense guys.) And way to insult your own WNBA team in your attempt to insult me. That's real DC pride there. I know DC has plenty of hard core fans but guess what. Overall, you don't have enough fans to fill up the arena during playoffs. (I suppose being down 0-2 to Miami that year was a decent excuse to skip out.) Let's see how many people show up to games and the playoffs now that Caron and Arenas are out. Use all that energy to get Wiz fans to games instead of trying to rag on me. probably won't be enough but worth a shot I guess. Miami-Phoenix in the finals. bet on it.
