Why is Utah spending so much money?

The Utah Jazz, even without coming to terms with restricted free agent Paul Millsap(notes), are going to pay about $73 million in salaries next season. And yet, this hasn't stopped them from working to retain Paul Millsap.

We know why. Millsap's a terrific player, a borderline All-Star last season, and he provided a good slap in the face to those who doubted per-minute statistics last season when his presence in the Jazz lineup (with or without Deron Williams(notes); sometimes with a hobbled Deron Williams) allowed Utah to win with Carlos Boozer(notes) on the bench. He's 24, he can board, and he can score. And as much as the Oklahoma City Thunder might throw at him, Utah seems set to match the terms for the restricted free agent.

But bringing him back at a fair price (say, starting at $9 million a year) knocks the Jazz payroll all the way up to $82 million, and that's just for 12 players. The team is well over the luxury tax, a threshold deceased former owner Larry Miller vowed never to pay last season.

The team's going to pay it, though. For now. And the question isn't, "is this team a winner, for that money?" We know it isn't. We think it has the talent to make it out of the West, if healthy, but it's not a guaranteed winner.

The questions should go along the lines of, who wants Carlos Boozer for a few months? And who'd like to take a chance on Mehmet Okur(notes)? And remember when Andrei Kirilenko(notes) wasn't scared of contact and/or his coach? That could come back any day now. Do you want to trade for him?

Utah figures to be huge dealers as the summer moves along, and into the 2009-10 season. Boozer wasn't exactly made superfluous by Millsap's play -- he does score in a way that Millsap can't match even with Paul's propensity for active finishes off the screen and roll - but he now boasts a massive expiring contract that could be worth a sniff.

A dangerous proposition, for any team. They could only pull in Boozer for a spell, only to see him jet to another team in 2010. Money is the motivating force for Carlos, but that doesn't mean he'll stick with a team that owns his Bird Rights - i.e., the Jazz, or whoever trades for him. Boozer and his family want the right setting. Utah, because it pays him the most money, is currently the right setting. He's a flexible guy.

Okur is different. His contract is smaller, but his game isn't as malleable. He has to be part of a team that plays sound defense, and he's probably best suited to play power forward on a squad with a defensive presence in the middle, making up for all the power forwards that can blow by him. Better than being blown past by a center, in my estimation.

He's not as easy to place. Portland would seem a proper fit, with all that cap space, but they already have an Okur-type (that's not a slam, Blazer fans) in LaMarcus Aldridge(notes). Detroit's used its salary cap space up. Oklahoma City likely isn't into adding a 30-year old. Maybe New Orleans would be willing to clear potential space for the shooter, which could net the Jazz Tyson Chandler(notes). Options, kind of.

And money. Lots of money. You can't help but applaud this team, even if they end up missing the tax, finding some way under it by dumping Boozer or Okur or AK (or any combination of the three) on other teams for a mere trade exception. Don't forget that the team also owns the rights to New York's 2010 first round draft pick, thanks to the fact that Isiah Thomas assumed that the world was to end sometime after November of 2005.

Other teams? Start dialing. You could get a hungry, talented big bent on earning a large payday, for a song.

Nobody is afraid of Utah out West. Drop into a zone and relax.

P.S. re: the Aldridge-Okur comparison: it's not a huge, huge stretch, but don't tell me Okur can run the floor, hit the offensive glass, or provide helpside D like LaMarcus can. True, LaMarcus relies on his jumper too much and needs to be tougher inside, but on athleticism alone, it's not the best comparison.

Jazz? Have they invested in a "How to win on the road for dummies" yet? No? Forget it then.

I hope Thunder DO get Millsap. They are a pretty good team, destine to be a force in the coming years.

What I'm saying is that all the good things Okur would bring to Portland, LMA already has him licked. Save for three-point shooting.

The Jazz are only spending so much money because they have been forced into it. They surely didn't set up their contracts thinking, "We love all of these players so much that we fully expect to pay huge luxury tax penalties in exchange for a first-round playoff exit." Boozer's surprise opt-in, Millsap's sudden prominence and unexpected market value, the Korver trade, difficulties in signing Okur to an extension -- all these factors created the perfect storm, salary-wise. It wasn't intentional, it couldn't have been foreseen, but now the Jazz have to deal with it.
The real question now, since the Jazz will almost certainly be luxury-tax payers regardless, is to decide whether securing Millsap as a future franchise cornerstone is worth taking a massive hit in tax for one season.
This question wouldn't have arisen had Boozer opted out as he said he was going to. Strange that he is likely doing more long-term harm to the Jazz by staying with them than he could possibly have done as an on-court opponent.

I don't think that anyone should be afraid of Utah but at the very least they are relevant in the west. Also, they are very very difficult to beat at home.

What's with all the love for Millsap? He's a good player, great rebounder, adequate scorer...but $9M a year? Seriously? Isn't that one of those contracts that we look back on in 4 seasons and say "What the hell were they thinking?" Sure, he can contribute to a winning team as a rebounding/energy guy off the bench, but I don't see the guy as a starting power forward for championship caliber team. His height alone (6'7") is a huge defensive liability against the elite power forwards (Garnett, Gasol, Duncan, Scola, Lewis, Aldridge, West). He plays hard, has a long wingspan, and is a good defender, but in a 7 game series, the guys I just mentioned would KILL him.

I'd like Okur on the Suns. Space the floor for PHX Memo!
The Suns could give back Ben Wallace's corpse that will happily be bought out for pennies on the dollar.
Whaddya say Utah? Okur and filler for Ben Wallace...tick tock tick tock

eh not so much. jazz needs some1 to stop kobe and a better center. if they do trade for tyson chandler i see a better match up vs gasol. i really think jazz should go for marion and get rid of Ak. marion will be cheaper and provide more offense and 3 shooting. hes a good defender too.

Keep Millsap and Okur, and dump CB and AK on anybody who will take them. Rebuild around D-Will and solid roleplayers like Brewer, Millsap, CJ Miles, and Okur.
It should all be so simple...

I believe the Jazz kicked the crap out of Portland, Houston, & The Lakers last season without Boozer & Williams, in 1 game and without Boozer & Milsap in another.
Kobe-me shot 12-33 in a LOSS 2 the Jazz. Who is the Kobe-me jocksniffer that said Utah has noone to Guard Kobe-me? No team needs a player that can guard Kobe-me, he shoots less than 40% in 1/3 of his games irregardless. Kobe-me shot 38.5% in the 3 finals games in Orlando. Who was guarding him?
Did anyone notice that the Jazz were on a roll last season before Boozer came back fulltime, and then finished the season by loseing 7 of 9 to drop to the 8th seed? Utah needs to trade Boozer & Williams for journeymen/team players. Stockton & Malone they are NOT!

Unbiased fan - are you drunk? I get the Boozer comment but Williams? You really think he isn't a team player? Look at those assist numbers again and how many times he passes up jumpers for the better shot. Not to mention his effort on the D.

Joe M im pretty sure Milsap had 19 straight double-doubles as a starter! And Scola? SCOLA? Is an elite power forward? And Aldridge? What are you talking about? Look at Milsaps numbers and compare them to his minutes... He may be 6' 7" But he plays like a 6' 10" beast!

Utah will be lucky to make the playoffs next year regardless of signing back all these guys. Did everyone forget how close Denver was to the Finals, and that would have been an easy series against Orlando. Denver and Portland are too strong for Utah to compete. Jazz - your window has closed.

LOL at #19. The Utah window has closed. They are one of the youngest teams you douche. They got hit hard last year with injuries and never clicked. 99% of "basketball fans" don't even pay attention to Utah for, well they are from Utah, the "Mormon state". People who actually watch them know they are one of the deepest and most talented teams. Any given night they can actually slaughter Denver (like they did this year) and they surely can beat Portland. If Utah can put away chemistry problems and stay healthy, a guaranteed dark horse in the West that no team will want to play. They got the best point guard in basketball, cp3 is too overrated compared to D Will.

Brandon - I'm not talking about numbers. Certainly, from a "per minute" standpoint, Millsap puts up great numbers and can probably "out-number" a few of the guys on that list. He can certainly outrebound most of them. What I'm talking about is MATCHUPS. What are the playoffs all about? MATCHUPS. If Utah thinks it can compete with the Lakers and Spurs (and Blazers and Rockets and Mavs and Hornets) with Millsap as their starting power forward they are sorely mistaken. He is a mismatch waiting to happen. And yes, Luis Scola is an elite power forward. I watched every Rocket playoff game and regardless of what his "numbers" say, the guy is a pitbull and an impossible matchup. He's too big for small forwards to guard and too quick for power forwards to guard. Millsap will go out and get you 13 and 8, but he isn't going to be a "problem in need of solving" for any competing team.
