Why … Jim Boylan is ruining everything

The news isn't surprising, but that doesn't make it any less enervating: Chicago Bulls interim coach Jim Boylan is rumored to be thinking about benching starters Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefalosha (or Kirk Hinrich) for former Cavaliers Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes.

This comes off the heels of a wickedly telling six whole days and four entire games (three with Gooden and Hughes coming off the bench) in the wake of a deal that sent former Bulls starters Ben Wallace and Joe Smith to Cleveland. Boylan has long been the interim's interim, packing up wins in Scott Skiles absence on the back of the usual December resurgence the Bulls typically provide, along with an easier schedule. No Jim O'Briens or Jeff Van Gundys here, just a nice, safe passage to either an 8th seed or 12th pick in the Draft.

Interim status shouldn't excuse the 14-17 job Boylan has done as Bulls coach, not when the team he is coaching was expected to be among the favorites in an Eastern Conference that is more craptastic than ever. Boylan has come across as Scott Skiles-lite, just as afraid to take chances on playing youngsters but not as prone to making a rash and immature post-game comment, or substituting five players at a time.

It's a wonderful combination: all of the fears and insecurities of the previous administration, patched with none of the accountability.

But things seemed to be looking up this time last week. First off, I picked up this bad boy on 180-gram vinyl. Then, the Bulls sent Wallace and Smith to the Cavs in an addition-by-subtraction deal, ostensibly freeing up time for Joakim Noah (who had out-played Wallace, per-minute, all season) and Thomas (who hadn't out-played Smith, but had shown the capability of doing so if given extended minutes). For once, and for the first time in a long while, it appeared as if the Chicago Bulls front office was getting it. The coaching staff, with no stiffs left to start, had no choice but to run the kids.

Though Noah continues to work through the rookie wall, Thomas has been brilliant: averaging 12.8 points on 55 percent shooting, eight rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 blocks, and a steal since the deal. If those numbers seem modest, consider that they came in only 27 minutes per game, and that those minutes were only limited by the presence of Gooden, whose explosive (if not efficient) offensive (if not defensive) start has the coaching staff thinking about switching forwards.

This makes no sense. Gooden has been great, but his play has come while on the court with Thomas in tandem. Now, dumping a starting-quality 7-footer for a 6-8 forward in Gooden makes little sense, but if Boylan had any hair on his chin, he'd start the forwards together (letting Gooden, who is a horrible help defender, guard post-up guys while Thomas roams for blocks and rebounds).

If he had any hair anywhere else, he'd continue with the lineup that most Bulls fans want to watch for the next seven years of their lives. This one:

C: Joakim Noah (23)
PF: Tyrus Thomas (21)
SF: Luol Deng (22)
SG: Thabo Sefolosha (23)
PG: Kirk Hinrich (27)

Look at those ages. Why not go with this group, let it learn together, retain the core, and see what happens when the best players on this team are - I don't know - closer to their primes instead of closer to their first legal ability to buy a pack of Pell-Mells?

Why shuttle it now for an admittedly talented (13 points on 40 percent shooting, ten rebounds, 29 minutes per game with Chicago) forward on his fourth team in six years, and an admittedly talented hybrid guard (perfect for a Bulls team that wants to run) who is the team's greybeard at 29?

What's the issue with playing these guys off the bench? Gooden's a free agent after next year, so what happens when he jets off for a bigger payday? Do you go back to a seething Thomas? What's wrong with establishing a youthful core? Why can't these teams pay attention to ages? I am NOT going to pay a lot for this muffler!

I'm not telling Boylan to relegate Hughes and Gooden to the end of the bench. Far from it. I'm not even suggesting he play them less minutes than the players they'd be replacing. In fact, I'd prefer Hughes sees more time than Thabo overall (though not as a rule), and the potential for Gooden to do the same should his defensive come around. Stop laughing.

What I am asking him to do is try and establish some sort of chemistry within the young rotation that has to be Chicago's core from here on out. It's no chore to get vets like Hughes and Gooden to shoot a lot and score a lot. What is a chore - and separates the great coaches from the also-rans - is putting the youngsters out there, and then making on-the-fly decisions as to who has it some nights, who doesn't, and who should be on the court when things count.

With the starting five listed above, plus the pair of Cavs, plus hold-overs like Ben Gordon (still this team's leading scorer), Andres Nocioni, and rookie Aaron Gray, the Bulls boast a ten-man rotation that a great and ballsy coach could turn into something special. A coach looking for easy answers and the chance to save his own hide goes with what he already knows. A coach who aspires to greatness has the confidence to take chances on what might be.

Sadly, after a week of "what might be," the Bulls are back to easy answers, and that unfortunate embrace of the predictable, pleasant, and ultimately mediocre. Awesome.

I thought they were giving the youth a tryout this year, since they aren't going anywhere....why start those two bums....seems like they were taking well to coming off the bench anyway!

Let's not blame Boylan too much when he could be sporting a starting frontline of Chandler, Aldridge, and Deng. And if I'm not mistaken, the Larry Hughes contract is going to make it even harder for Chicago to re-sign all of their free agents, which means they could end up losing one of the guys they refused to trade for Kobe, as well as Gooden who may leave anyway. Let's imagine that, the team we have now, minus Gooden and Gordon, plus whoever they can sign for the veteran's exception. Wow! Next year's looking even worse.

After watching the past game against Indiana, the Bull's are undisciplined. Who's at fault, Boylan. The Bull's should have run-away with that game, maybe not commit 5 fouls in the first 3 minutes of the 3rd quarter. I find it funny that's how the Bull's come out of halftime, hacking away. Boylan needs to get them better prepared at halftime and stop trying to coach so much with his subing. It's killing them!

I definitely would like to watch thabo over Larry Hughes, and while Noah's shot makes me want to puke, and wonder how someone with that terrible of a shot could get in the NBA and i'm here sitting behind a computer....., He's still fun to watch. Thomas is great too, much more entertaining than Gooden.

if hughes is going to get more minutes in the short term than thabo anyway, doesn't hurt to start him. It is a HUGE mistake to start Gooden over Tyrus. But, even if it happens, you have to figure that Boylan is on borrowed time anyway. Hopefully the next coach gets it right. Too bad Pax fired skiles when he did.

All I know is that as a Bulls fan, either they make some moves this offseason (i.e. get rid of Gordon and Noah) or I'm done as a Bulls fan. Explain to me what is so great about him, he's an undersized Center with no offensive game and what's worse he is uncoachable as his benching earlier this year by his teamates shows. And as for Gordon, shoot-first, no-defense guards are dime-a-dozen.

D, the Bulls are trying to make the playoffs. They're not rebuilding again and again so they can't afford to start players with zero experience. Plus, Gooden and Hughes are better than Wallace and Thabo. They deserve to start in the League.

This is the best yahoo blog I have ever read, and I appreciate finally having someone who understands the Bulls and their toils. Tyrus and Thabo MUST remain starters for the rest of the season barring injury or intolerable play (which they have shown zero signs of doing). Hughes is no long term fix as he is equally wreckless and inconsistent as Ben Gordon, so those two guys can battle for our sixth man spot and the other can be packaged in a deal with some of our other pieces to bring in somebody talented. Gooden has been solid, but Tyrus deserves a chance to develop and tune his outstanding ability. I am so glad someone finally called out Boylan. This guy has been terrible, just look at the lineups he puts on the floor in the fourth quarter. Please Boylan, play the young guys, and go back to being an assistant next year.

This article is such an over-reaction. It doesn't matter who is the "starter" as they will both be getting the same minutes basically. I certainly hope that is the starting lineup we will be seeing for the next 7 years. That would be a long 7 years.

whats with everyone hating hughes, he can succeed in this system as a slashing guard and found it difficult to play next to lebron seeing as how he is a slasher as well, thabo however must start like stated and has been playing well and is exactly what the bulls need a tall SG... as for GORDON y is he still here....
GORDON IS AWFUL!! HE DOESNT DESERVE TO BE IN AN NBA UNIFORM, ANYBODY ON THIS TEAM COULD CHUNK UP RIDICULOUS SHOTS AND SCORE LIKE HE DOES!!! GET RID OF HIM ASAP PLS!!! OTHER THAN WALLACE HE IS WHO I WANTED TO C GO...

Does anyone remember the game two years ago when the Bulls were down by only 5 to the Sonics and Skiles decided to put Duhon on Rashard Lewis for the last 4 minutes? Lewis, with an 8 inch height advantage, proceeded to score seven points to win the game. This is with Luol Deng sitting on the bench watching. My point is, Skiles was no better of a coach than Boylan, especially in terms of developing young players. Boylan is sitting in a position where he wants to impress the management, and the management is so delusional they actually think they're going to win with this roster. Either he plays the veterans, goes for the wins, and maybe keeps some kind of job in Chicago; or he does the right thing, plays the young guys, Chicago tanks and gets a lottery pick, and Boylan ends up looking for a new job.

Man forget that, keep tyrus in and let gooden give us a spark of the bench, i love that starting line-up, maybe even put gooden at center and let a energy man like noah come off the bench. keep gordan 6th man, that's where he's best at. Plz plz plzzz let kirk run the point, he is really developing, and allow thabo, deng, n tryrus to score, don't forget about Noc either, he'll get u 17

That is actually the best lineup they could use. If they don't do something this year which they probally won't, I see the Bulls giving up a ton of talent like before. They have given away an all star team once-- Elton Brand, Ron Artest, Brad Miller, Tyson Chandler. I've been a Bulls fan for 20 years and every year I keep hoping they can come back, it doesn't look like it again.

Gordon will probably be traded next year Bulls can match any offer for him. As for Gooden he is signed for one more year and could be packaged with Gordon, first round pick and one of Bulls young guys in a trade. This is big offseason for Pax.
