Ball Don't Lie - NBA

It was a bit of a surprise, but T.J. Ford returned to the Raptors line-up in Miami last night. Ford came off the bench to play 17 minutes against the Heat's scrubs, posting four points, four assists, two steals and just one turnover. Not a bad line for the little guy's first real crack at game speed in almost two months since suffering a stinger in his neck.

And while I'm sure members of the Raptors' organization are happy as Clamato Juice to have Ford back healthy, his return does present Coach Sam Mitchell with an interesting dilemma: Who starts at point guard again -- Jose Calderon or T.J. Ford?

It's no secret that Calderon has been tearing up the Eastern Conference since taking over for Ford. With solid starter minutes, Calderon has averaged 14 points (on 53% shooting) and 10 dimes. Add to that a ridiculous league-leading 5.56 assist-to-turnover ratio, and the Spaniard even had some NBA pundits claiming he should make the All-Star Game. He's been incredible.

But does Calderon's play mean Ford shouldn't be awarded his starting point spot back? I say no.

First off, a player should ever lose their job because of injury. That doesn't seem right. From all reports, Ford has worked his tail off in his attempt to comeback. You think he was visualizing the bench every time he ran lines or lifted a dumbbell? No way. The starting spot was Ford's before the fluke accident; it should be his when he returns. To take it away from him would be emotionally deflating.

In addition, Calderon has proven he can succeed in both the starter and back-up roles, so you have to believe his play would remain steady. He has a lot of experience preparing for a game off the bench; T.J., not so much.

But what do you think? Does a healthy Ford deserve his starting spot back? Could moving Calderon back to the bench hurt the Raptors' recent success? And hey, what about Darrick Martin? Let's hear it.

I don't think a starter should lose a job out because of the ignorance of his coach.
Jose should have been starting all along.

Calderon put up very comparable numbers (especially in light of his minutes) when he was coming off the bench. I say start Ford and move Calderon back to the bench. Players shouldn't lose their jobs due to injury and it's smart to keep productive players in positions they're comfortable with.

Calderon has always been a better PG. Ford is an amazing scorer though; play Ford at SG at times or have him play PG off the bench.

Skeets, I'm hatching on to your agruement in this one. Before Ford had the neck stinger which sidelined him for nearly two months, he had been the "second man" of the team. Between him and Chris Bosh, the numbers were soaring and were two remarkable to players to see play together. As of right now, Calderon definitely deserves the starting role, considering the numbers he has been putting up this year but in the long run, I wouldn't be surprised to see T.J. take a huge bite out of Calderon's playing time. In the teams best interest, I think they should stick them both in the starting line up, which will get Bosh more open looks due to the demanding defence the two guards recieve.

Ford and Calderon make a dynamic one two punch. Calderons fast, Fords faster. I think Calderon wont mind coming of the bench. Give ford his starting job back!

Jerry Sloan says Jason Hart (8.34 PER, sub-Duhon) won't lose his backup job to Ronnie Price because of injury, so obviously Skeets is right.

Calderon should stay as the starter... TJ is good but it also minimizes injury to him if he comes off the bench.

its not that ford lost his job due to injury, its that given the opportunity Calderon has proven he is a steady All-start caliber PG without a bad spine. I feel for TJ, but you can't invest in damaged goods. As valuable as those good may be.

Forget about that Lou Gehrig fellow...give Wally Pipp his spot back. I guess Tom Brady should have been benched when Drew Bledsoe came back, too Oh, wait, that would have been stupid. C'mon people! If Calderon is significantly better than Ford, then he should be the starter. The only thing in sports that matters is the TEAM. If the coach thinks Calderon makes the team better, then he should start. End of subject. the "injury" issue is irrelevant. Who cares why Calderon got his chance? If he has proven he is best, then it is his job.
Oh, by the way, he has. I wish my poor Atlanta Hawks had him

Ford is a team player. He understands he needs to win back the job. Someone else seized the opportunity while he was gone, so must he in order to win it back.

Saying that a player should not lose their starting job due to injury is ridiculous. If a bench player comes out and produces, also works his tail off and brings success he should be able to keep his starting job. As for Ford not being familiar with coming off the bench... big deal, a lot of players have to go through that. Just like in Sacto, Bibby, K-Mart had to earn their starting spots back. That is how it should be... based on productivity and success over being scared about hurting a player's (in this case, TJ Ford) feelings

I think Ford should get his starting job back until he proves he no longer is the better point guard in Toronto. It should almost be the same kind of situation as Manu in San Antonio. Play them both equally, but start Ford.

As much as I think Ford deserves to be on the starting line-up. I really wouldn't want to mess up the chemistry Raptors' having with Calderon. Jose is now a proven poing guard, and Ford's inability to keep health is really a concern for me. Raptor should probably look into trading Ford for a mid. level shooting guard, as Raptors would mind

Why should Calderon lose his starting job, when he was putting up bette numbers than Ford before his injury? And why let Ford stumble through his first few weeks of ball? Keep Calderon in the starting spot and let Ford play around 15-20 minutes until he gets back to normal. His return game proved the guy still has rust he needs to shake off.

I think if a starter goes down and his replacement plays better than he did, then the job should go to the guy who plays the position better. i would continue to start calderon until he proves he cant play anymore. its life. injuries happen and the person next in line needs to seize the moment like jose did. look at the supposed great tom brady. if drew bledsoe didnt go down tom brady wouldve never had his chance to shine and win 3 super bowls while also blowing an undefeated season this year! go giants!

Easy ... Calderon stays in lineup... he is the next Steve Nash. 40% on 3's, 50% FG%, and 90% on FT's. If anything start Ford as SG.

Tough call...I don't think you can change anything right now, especially the way they are playing right now. If the Raps start to play worse, then maybe a change is in order.
I am a huge Ford fan and believe he is the future, however, right now Jose is the man who should be playing starter minutes.
In the grand scheme of things, who cares who starts...they want to finish the game and that will depend on who is playing better that game, as we saw before the injury.
Its a nice problem to have, that's for sure.
