Ball Don't Lie - NBA

In case you missed it — ahem, NFL officials — here's an AP photo (and video, while it still lasts) of Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes doing an imitation of LeBron James' "chalk throw" after haulin' in Sunday's ridiculous game-winning touchdown.

According to some astute BDL readers, ESPN was completely confused by the touchdown celebration. Cris Carter said Holmes was putting hot sauce on a rabbit. (And then tossing it in the air? Huh?) Another talking head went with ketchup as his condiment of choice. (In honor of Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, you see.)

Nope and nope. NBA freaks know Holmes was just showing love to LeBron's chalk routine.

As Rob Mahoney at HP succinctly puts it: "Chalkman is the new Jumpman." There is no doubt.

I love how the announcers were totally silent at the time. They clearly had no idea what was going on.

Listening to the ESPN panel afterwards they had no clue what he did. I told the people I was watching it with at the time it was LeBron. Chris Carter said it was hot sauce on a rabbit??? I think it was Keyshawn who said it was ketchup from Heinz field??? Those guys are clueless.

On a different subject, I just feel this needs to be changed. I'm sick of seeing teams commit penalties when theyre already backed up to their own one yard line and then a ten yard penalty ends up being basically a redo? Can this not be changed to either loss of down or how about EXTEND THE FIRST DOWN marker? Am I the only one who thinks, among the thousands of terrible inconsistencies in NFL's rules/regulations, this one is so obvious? So if youre on the 11 yard line and commit a 10yard penalty, you sink back to your 1 and have to go 20 yards for a first down, but if youre on the 10 yard line and commit a 10 yard penalty you only back up 5 have to go 15? Whats the point of the penalty if its not punished to the full extent?

First off, the chalk throw is Garnett's move. Lebron stole it.
As for the Superbowl I was rooting for the Cardinals. Warner and Fitz deserved to win, with their record-breaking 4th-quarter performance. Their defense really let them down on the last TD. I mean, you know you need to cover Holmes in the back of the end zone, right? You don't need a bunch of players in the middle of the end zone if that's not where he's going. They ended up with 3 players playing underneath him, and the corner was pretty much wide-open. It looked closer on tv than it really was, but that was a fairly easy pass to make, Ben just had to get it over the heads of those 3 defenders. Terrible coverage.

I agree with #5. You could even go one step further. If a team is on their own 9-yard line and they commit a 10-yard penalty, how about calling it a safety and making them kickoff? Then the players might start to think twice about committing all these stupid penalties.

KG took if from Jordan.. Jordan was the first to ever make it famous. they use to show him clappin that stuff all the time.. then KG started to do it. I dont believe he ever threw it up in the air.. I know he just clapped in the face of the announcers all the time... Lebron took it to another level and made it a event. Doesnt matter if its a home game or away they will show when lebron throws the chalk.. you cant get mad cuz LBJ made it sweet and is making money off of it..

You guys don't have a clue! Neither Jordan or KG did the chalk throw anywhere near the way LeBron does it! Like CB said, don't hate the man cause he found a way to market it! Cause if KG or Mike was creative enough, they would have marketed it too! To say that he took it from those guys is sophmoric at best! Get a life!

Actually #5, if there was a ten yard penalty on the 11, the ball would go to the 5.5 yard line, not the one. The rule is that the penalty cannot take the ball more than half the distance to the goal line.

Kudos to #9 for giving props to Jordan for trailblazing the announcer chalk clapping. I'm sure Red Kerr and Jim Durham used to love it back in the day.

Garnett has patented the 'slam your head into the post' move before games. Granted, I wish more Steelers would copy said move (after removing their helmet, of course, and repeating until they fall unconscious), but I will settle for LBJ chalk throw impressions.

everyone says homage to lebron....im sorry but ive been watching basketball long enough to know that MJ did it before him, more subtle, but before lebron, and KG of course does it, and i like KGs a lot better....everyone is just giving lebron credit for everything....but he isnt the first to do it...man call it a homage to KG he has a ring, and a path to the hall of fame already cemented for him!!!!!!!!!

I was rooting for the Cards....But that was one heck of a catch!
The refs didn't cost the Cards the game....Their blitzing did!
Big Ben is a big guy and tough to get down....But he's no Michael Vick (elusive).
The Cards just couldn't sack him....They were right there, but just couldn't get
their hands on him. That's what cost them the game.
As far as the Lebron-Jordan-Garnett chalk thing goes......They're all different.
they just incorporate chalk. Dr. J was the first one to dunk right? does that mean we're going to not give credit to the rest of the NBA players out there who revolutionized the art of dunking? NOPE.
I like Garnetts ritual....I loved MJ's....LeBrons is awesome too. That's all it matters. its Entertainment folks!

Yeah I was really "owned", because someone incorrectly disagreed with me. Yeah that was some real "ownage". Any real NBA fan will tell you the same thing, Lebron stole the chalk thing from KG. He does it a little differently, big deal.
J King: No, I don't want anyone standing out of bounds. But yes, I do want someone covering the very corner of the end zone. Your argument makes no sense. If they were so worried about Hines Ward, then why were there 3 guys trying to cover Holmes? Look at the video. The problem is that all 3 guys played underneath coverage, which is stupid because it left them all standing in the same spot. Get a clue, people.
