This is Detroit's haul?

I like and respect the games of Ben Gordon(notes) and Charlie Villanueva(notes). I think both players – while shot-happy, mercurial, and crummy on defense – have been unfairly maligned throughout their careers.

What I just can't imagine, knowing throughout 2008-09 that the Pistons would have heaps of salary-cap space to work with this summer, that this is how fans of the team assumed things would work out.

Carlos Boozer's(notes) staying in Utah, I understand that option is off the table. By midseason, last year, it became more and more likely that Boozer wouldn't want to walk away from guaranteed money in 2009-10. Not in this climate, not with his 2008-09 play. And beyond that, the free-agent pickings are somewhat slim.

But Gordon and CV? This soon? Woj is reporting that both will be in Detroit today, and likely to sign with the Pistons. And that their new contracts will take up most of Detroit's $20 million in cap space.

So, that's your team. Those are your Pistons. That's the payoff of the rebuilding process. Yikes.

We know why Villanueva is available. The Bucks didn't want to extend a qualifying offer to their once-restricted free-agent forward, and for good reason. The team is trying to figure its future out, and adding new salary for a very good-but-not-great player while confusion reigns is never a good idea. Even if all of CV's offers fell by the wayside and he had to sign for the QO, nah. Just not worth it, even if his play and contributions are worth much more than the QO.

Gordon? The Bulls prepared to do this for years. Team owner Jerry Reinsdorf is easily the cheapest in the NBA, taking in quite a bit of profit while refusing to pay the luxury tax, or retain players that he's not entirely comfortable with.

You've been able to see the writing on the wall for years with this move. It's why the team makes all sorts of moves to approach the tax (like spending guaranteed money on two draft picks who aren't even likely to be in next year's rotation) just to leave itself the excuse to not pay Gordon, a huge scoring threat for a team that sometimes struggles to top 80 points in a game.

Chicago will toss out John Salmons'(notes) name, of course, because most of their fans won't remember that Salmons will turn 30 later this year, and will be about to enter the down side of his career. The Bulls always leave you a carrot, always refusing to smartly spend money in the proper areas while distracting you with the luck of the Derrick Rose(notes) lottery selection, or a seven game series loss to a team missing its best player.

And Detroit? I just thought they could do better. I understand that you have to wrap up talent and assets (because talent is an asset) early in the free-agent game, before someone comes along with a newer, bluer, offer. And I understand that, supposedly, you don't want to rake the players who you're trusting to turn your team around over the coals, letting them twist for too long while you explore other options.

But ... no.

Explore other options. Almost $20 million in cap space means you can trade for great players, give up nothing but draft picks or also-rans, and absorb the salary hit under the cap. It means you have flexibility. It means you can do better than Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. Again, I like both players, and am sorry to come across like I'm denigrating them, but you have to look around longer.

And if you do explore, and there's nothing to find? Hurt feelings have a tendency to float away once you hand nearly $20 million over to two players. By next season, they'll forget that you agreed to terms on Aug. 19, instead of July 1.

For now, though, this is it for the Pistons. They'll try to trade Rip Hamilton, but the only team that would take on an above-average player (at this stage, this is what Hamilton is) with a superstar contract would be a team making a massive mistake. And do you want a team that makes massive mistakes' players?

Rodney Stuckey(notes), Gordon, Hamilton, CV, Tayshaun Prince(notes), Jason Maxiell(notes), Aaron Afflalo. Maybe Austin Daye(notes). That's a rotation worth singing about? The Pistons figure to have a small amount of cap space next summer, even if Hamilton stays on board and with the new contracts, but not nearly enough to try and seduce Chris Bosh(notes), Dwyane Wade(notes), or LeBron James(notes).

The only hope is that the team can finagle a deal with Bosh using its remaining cap space. But that would also mean giving up an asset, and most indications are that Bosh wants to go where James goes (or, likely, stays) anyway.

It seems like a fun team. Gordon and CV are certainly far cheerier than Allen Iverson(notes) and Rasheed Wallace(notes). I'm just not sure it's a knockout team. And I'm not sure that rotation is worth spending nearly $60 million on, which is what the Pistons would be doing next year if Ben and Charlie come on board.

digg delicious

If they keep Rip, it would be bad like A.I. and Rip. Rip is the main scorer. Ben - all he does is shoot. No defense. Just shoot, shoot, shoot. Plus he is not a consistent shooter. Just a guy that gets hot. And with Rip there, you are again risking another fallout between two selfish players - this time Rip and Ben. Charlie is good but he is no traditional big man who will get you enough rebounds and he lack blocking skills Bad, bad trading. Get Paul Millsap and a better point guard.

Sounds like an average lineup good for about... 4th seed in the east at best. If they played in the West, this probably wouldn't even be a playoff team.
Looks like Joe Dumars is getting exposed. Your luck has run out Joe, you actually have to make good decisions now.

i think ppl are looking at this all wrong. while i agree rip isnt worth the contract he has and is overrated, i still have a feeling he has solid trade value, maybe even enough to get someone like boozer from utah in a trade (allowing them to resign milsap and strenghtening their only hole which is sg). but even bigger than that charlie villanueva is a 24 year old big man who can fill it up from long range. ben gordon is also young and showed against the c's how he can carry an offense for long periods of time. the key with both of these guys are they are among the top shooters in the league, and orlando showed that now shooting is paramount. the fact is detroit was never gonna sign one of the big free agents next year. so now now they have decided to go for a younger more atheltic team with shooters and guys who can penetrate (stuckey and bynum). true they look like a disaster defensively but look at the playoffs would you consider any of those teams lockdown defensive teams? with the new rules those days where the spurs and pistons ruled are over for now. definately not contenders yet but at the same time could be on the right path...

Would the Bulls be "smartly" spending money in locking up a 6-2 two guard who can't (or won't) play defense? Really? As a Bulls fan, I'll be happy to see BG go. He provided lots of excitement, but that's about it. Time to move on.

Here I am, disagreeing with Dwyer about Kidd, minutes later disagreeing with Ziller about CV, and again minutes later agreeing with Dwyer about CV. It's hopeless. Is there no consistency in the world anymore?

absolutely!!!! for a normal gm id completely understand this...hell im not even a pistons fan but i absolutely love n respect the team dumars has put together over the years. but this makes no sense. they lose their defensive identity with these guys. they lose their toughness. plus wouldnt u much rather just wait til next yr n try n sign one of the big names? i mean if they get rid of rip theyll have enough money to sign both bosh n lbj, n honestly stuckey n prince would compliment them perfectly. n if they dont get them fine their will be a buncha teams willing to trade u players when they dont have to take salaries in return. i say sign marvin williams for a lil more than mid level, n then wait on a stud or two. a supporting cast of tayshaun stuckey n williams is pretty strong, especially defensively. all you will need are the superstars to fit in n take them to the finals for many yrs to come

The Pistons will never be able to lure LeBron or Wade and Joe D knows it so he's settling for some decent players to appease fans and bring them to the gate again before they turn on the team. "But...we went out and got two of the best free agents"-Joe D, a year from now

Joe Dumars is ruining the franchise. The current owner needs to set the priorities straight.
Detroit = DEFENSE and definitely not bad contracts.
I think if Villanueva comes for 7 million per year (that's good) Forget about Gordon. We'll live with Rip Hamilton (otherwise we've got another controversy of who to start).
Sign the likes of Gortat, Turkoglu (9 million per year),

Can someone explain to me why the Pistons can't still acquire Boozer for a second round pick? Were they planning on paying him less than $12.5M to start? Wouldn't they be better off renting him for a season before committing long term?
I just don't know why Boozer to Detroit is now completely impossible.

just once I'd like to read a post by KD that doesn't mention Rip Hamilton's contract.
I don't get the point of signing Gordon... they need big men.
Also, the Pistons have never had a lineup 'worth singing about', they've always seemed to get the job done with castoffs from other teams. Why should this year be any different?

as 15 and 16 said, the pistons have done a lot with people that have chips on their shoulders. I think Joe D is doing what he's always done: find players that not just have talent, but are willing to make the commitment to maximizing it.
ben wallace, tayshaun, rasheed billups and rip all have had knocks on their games before the pistons. Ben Gordon and charlie have had inconsistent seasons and have struggled in many systems, but they're winners and train to compete as hard as they can (go Uconn huskies?). they were both lottery picks, so the talent is definitely there.
I'm not worried about the players as mush as I am about a coach for the pistons. For this team, you need someone who is willing to teach and really light a fire under the palyers. Michael Curry and Flip were bad selections in this respect. Larry Brown burned out after a couple of seasons, but he was great in terms of how he taught basketball and instituted his system.
I desperately want a coach that Joe D will commit to for more than 2 years. Avery Johnson seems like the best option now. I don't want Doug Collins, he's paranoid.

None of the players we've signed in the Joe D era have been known for their defensive skills. Yet somehow they adapted. Joe won't sign them if they don't fit into his team!!!

i know we have to spend some money now, and i agree these ar not the better options, and they also are not bad ball players. WE will be a better team, go to play offs and die on first round or with luck on second round. Just a question here, why we didnt sign the kid Jarret Jack from Pacers as a PG and try ti sign the millsap guy and tray to add a good hardn-nose Center o PF, we need better defense man.
Go Pistons! Charlie sacate el dedo y baja 10 rebotes aunque sea loko, suerte.

    - getting these two doesnt mean thats its for joe d. he still has his eyes on bosh. rip/tayshaun for bosh is a great deal for TO. they might bite...

You can knock Joe all you want for the Iverson trade...he screwed up, and he knows he screwed that up. But outside of that and Darko he hasn't really made a mistake yet with players. As has been said above, the Pistons have been known for taking the players with talent that no-one else wants and turned that into a great lineup. Stuckey and Maxiel are both coming on extrememly strong, and will be great this year. Tayshaun can pick it up with Rasheed gone, and between Rip, Gordon & CV should be a great scoring SG/F positions. The only thing that worries me is the lack of a Center position besides Maxiel, but if McDyess stayes and stays healthy that would help. I still trust Joe D. and think that this could very well work out nicely.
