During a press conference yesterday, Oklahoma City chairman Clay
Bennett revealed his franchise will be called Thunder and unveiled the
team's not-so-secret logo and colors. Here's what they're saying out in
the ether about the new look ...
The OKC NBA Sports Blog: "This is terrible. This logo has nothing to do with Thunder. Quite frankly, I'm Thunder-shocked. The blue is the same color as the state flag. Like I was telling Zorgon earlier, it's not bad for an uncreative, unoriginal, generic, unNba logo. Oh well, it isn't the logo that makes the team, its what happens on the court that matters. Who am I kidding, this is the worst thing that's happened in Oklahoma since Dairy Queen pulled out of the state."
Brand New: "If the name doesn't make you shake in your seat out of electrifying excitement neither will the logo, not even with lukewarm blurb about it: "With a nickname denoting energy and power, a classic-look logo, and the colors of an Oklahoma sunset […]". Perhaps the most misguided, dispassionate and lackluster professional sports logo produced in recent time. There is nothing unique, memorable or thunderous about it and the cornucopia of elements thrown in there never make a cohesive whole. Quite dispiriting to see a blank-slate opportunity missed so harshly."
Rip City Project: "... the logo is so blah it's unbelievable. So let me get this straight, you named the team Thunder but have absolutely no thunderbolts in the logo? Nothing even resembling a lightning strike or some sort of electric force. Instead it's Thunder in big font with that wack OKC logo under it. I'm sorry but that OKC logo looks like a fast food restaurant logo more with each time I look at it. For some reason it reminds me of Denny's but I know that's just my imagination running wild. Disappointing to say the least."
Upside & Motor: "No visual on the unis just yet, but we should all be very, very worried. If ALL THAT WORK was put into designing such a simple yet terrible logo, one can only imagine how outrageously awful these uniforms are going to be. Plus, orange? Really? The Bobcats have been rocking an electric orange that looks terrible (especially compared to the not-so-seizure-inducing blue digs ... although did anyone see that terrible checkered pattern experiment?), and that's the farthest thing from a glowing endorsement of the color."
FanHouse: "Bright side to the blinding palette: Kevin Durant has played in orange before. Sure, that was burnt orange and this is more like ... overripe tangelo/roasted butternut squash gazpacho orange. (I believe "Craig Sager's favorite knit kerchief orange" is the official name for the hue.)"
Basketbawful: "There were rumors that they would go all the way with the minor-league shtick and add the "cats" suffix to the name, like the "Lafayette Swamp Cats" or the "New Hampshire Fisher Cats". That would give us the "Oklahoma City Thundercats", which is both ridiculous and awesome. But if they can name a hockey team after an Emilio Estevez movie, is a popular 80s cartoon featuring anthropomorphic kung-fu felines that far out of the question?"
Supersonicsoul: "I suppose one could make a comment regarding the quality of the logo, but, honestly, anything I say regarding this is just going to come off as sour grapes, regardless of the merit of my opinion. So with that in mind, permit me to make one positive comment about the logo ... it is very easy to draw, and, if life has not changed too drastically since I was in grade school, there will be many Pee-Chees adorned with this logo in the great Oklahoma City area this fall. For all the 8-year-old boys, who, like me, spent the greater part of fifth grade drawing various professional sports logos on their schoolwork, today is a good day. So it's got that going for it, anyway."
Dime: "How's this for cruelty: As soon as the OKC press conference was over and NBA TV went back to its original program, the very first image to show up on screen was from KeyArena, showing the highlights from a Sonics/Kings game this past season (the one where Kevin Martin hit a game-winner). Immediately after that, the next shot was of Ray Allen playing for Boston. That was just wrong on so many levels …"
But what do you think? Vote away.

What in God's name is a thunderbolt? Last time I checked sounds aren't visible.

1. It's LEFT, not LEAVED.....
2. Seattle fans have every right to feel jilted. The Key was a smaller building than most in the NBA, hence 13,000 is not a bad number at all. It's certainly going to be better than what the Thunder will average once the new toy loses it's shine..Memphis, New Orleans, and Charlotte(again) could attest for that.....
3. Stern will be the downfall of the NBA...Why expand to foreign markets if you can't even keep the 14th largest market in the country?

As for Seattle's market, they may be the 14th biggest money market...but they cant touch Oklahoma's SPORT MARKET. We were in the top 10 in attendance with the Hornets (which werent a playoff team like they are now), our minor league teams are always amongst the top in the country in attendance, and every Saturday we have almost 90,000 poeple in the stands at an OU football game while just down the road at OSU there's another 60,000 fans. We would proably have a higher attendance in a professional soccer league than Seatlle has in the NBA. Get over it.
