Less than 24 hours after Portland warned NBA teams not to touch Darius Miles or risk possible legal action, the Grizzlies called their bluff and signed DM to a 10-day contract. If he plays in two games, the remaining $18 million of his previous contract with Portland goes back on the Blazers' salary cap. Eek. Here's what they're saying out in the ether about it all ...
The Sporting Blog: "Apparently I grossly underestimated just how grudging respect for KP had been, how much he was seen as equal parts brilliant and smug. This Miles stuff was the last straw, the culmination of several seasons worth of ambivalence toward Pritchard. For any other general manager, it would have been awkward. In this case, it was not only embarrassing — it was just the misstep others had been waiting for."
Blazer's Edge: "It is very, very, very unlikely the Blazers will end up suing the Grizzlies or any one else over Darius. This was a unanimous conclusion among everyone I talked to (10+ people). That was my understanding going into the arena tonight based on conversations I've had and nothing tonight led me to believe that there was a good chance things will change. Of course, anything is possible; but if you want to simply call that email an epic fail and move on with your life, I think you should feel very confident in doing so. Unless the Blazers have access to a "smoking gun" (some evidence that the Grizzlies' sole intention in playing Miles is to screw with the Blazers) this legal chapter is done. And it should be: the team is better off focusing on presenting their appeal to the league. Given the circumstances, it seems like an appeal might have a reasonable chance of succeeding."
Sports On My Mind: "[Team President] Larry Miller has learned that the NBA is not the NFL, where, win or lose big, owners still can garner enormous profits through means other than winning and filling their stadiums. In the NBA with its guaranteed player contracts, putting an exciting product on the floor, winning games, and filling the arena is a must. And though league commissioner David Stern has turned more conservative, backing off his 'player’s first' stance of the halcyon days of the NBA, the paradigm shift in league-wide attitude and philosophy toward players in image based and not inextricably tied to the flow of money through the sport."
Beyond The Beat: "As someone who covers the league, I couldn’t but help think about Portland’s position in all of this the past few days — well, at least since Friday. How hard will it be now for Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard to work the phones — knowing what has transpired regarding Darius Miles (that’s the last time you will hear Miles’ name mentioned, I swear) — and not feel that will play a factor into how other front offices respond? He won’t be communicating via e-mail. This much we know."
The Rip City Project (comments): "... a priceless comment on ESPN regarding the so-called Darius situation: 'To follow the Taco Bell allegory, it would be like ordering a taco and the guy sayin its a $1.29. So you pay for it and eat it, then the manager comes up and says, "Oops, my employee was wrong, its $3.29," and expecting you to pay it, and if you can't, he makes you work in the kitchen until you can give him $5.29 for trying to circumvent Taco Bell's pay before you eat policy. Maybe that allegory works, I'm pretty drunk.'"
The FanHouse: "The biggest impact (other than the potential for Portland's summer cap space to be halved) might be renewed national excitement for the Grizzlies. Bloggers, fans and non-Blazer partisans have almost universally cheered the Memphis move, with Hardwood Paroxysm's headline bringing the best summation. The Grizz are 11-26, but someone needs to get Friday's home game against Utah on national TV. Kevin Pritchard will be able to hear the cheers when Miles comes in all the way in Oregon."
SLAM Online: "It’s kinda funny: People used to dislike the Blazers because they had a bunch of players who got in trouble all the time. Now people dislike the Blazers not because of their actual players, but because of the people in the front office who went out and got the nice players. Go figure."

It's rather obvious Miles will not be a useful part of any team this season, and whether or not they picked him to intentionally ruin a team won't ever be proven but when you play him for 2 games (probably after learning that the 6 preseason games actually counted towards the total) since apparently NOBODY knew they did until a week ago, then release him to avoid having to pay him for a season, yet you DO still want him for another 10 day contract? Ooooooooookay? Why? You're not making any noise in the NBA this year...Is Miles on a 10 day going to turn your team around? Since you aren't going to play him until you're losing by 20 for 2 minutes so he can jog up and down the court, I'm sure thats a reasonable reason to sign a player.
Really? There's nobody out there who can ACTUALLY crack this line-up?
Just like last years bogus Gasol for Gasol deal, Memphis is out again to F with the league

This is actually rather simple. The Grizzlies released him because they would have had to guarantee his contract for the rest of the season had they not waived him. By releasing him, they left themselves the option of signing Miles to consecutive ten-day contracts to give themselves more time to determine if they will need to sign another big man if Darko Milicic does not return soon. The Clippers did the same with Fred Jones. This is a pretty common occurrence prior to contracts becoming guaranteed.
"Just like last years bogus Gasol for Gasol deal, Memphis is out again to F with the league"
Can someone tell me which better deal was out there for Gasol last year? Kirilenko? Marion and Marcus Banks? So many followers of sports think that trades are only about talent for talent at the moment of the trade. The Lakers offered exactly what the Grizzlies wanted, cap space, draft picks, and young talent. Marc Gasol is averaging 11.4 and 6.9 as a rookie. Darrell Arthur is averaging 5.3 and 4.3 as a rookie. They turned Crittendon into a draft pick. They got 10 million dollars in expiring contracts.
If you think Miles is such a bum, try taking your anger out on the Blazers for signing him to that deal to begin with. Directing your rage at the Grizzlies for having a bench player whose best days are behind him makes about as much sense as rambling about the Sixers having Donyell Marshall.

Perhaps you think it's a good idea to willingly overpay for a product you can easily get for less money. No wonder you're siding with the Blazers.

The doctors from the NBA, the NBA PA and the Blazers said he should not play, not that he could not. 60 minutes in six preseason games, and 12 minutes of garbage time in two regular season games, do not necessarily prove that he is fully rehabilitated. I've heard Danny Ainge and Chris Wallace say he was fine. I'm waiting to hear that from a doctor.
I wonder: if all the doctors were right and Darius ends up turning himself into a cripple, are people going to be riding Wallace, Ainge, Dan Gilbert and everyone else for putting Darius on the floor? Just asking, Skeets. I'll be waiting

The analogy is a football who's suffered a number of concussions and is told that if he gets another one or two, he'll be a vegetable. If said player tried to give it a go, of course he'd look like he could still play, but that's a dangerous game.
I'm a Portland fan, and while I don't really care for the way the Blazers are going about this, I do think people are being rather quick to judge, thinking that KP is out to ruin Darius Miles.

But this does kinda rule from the perspective of now we can hate on Portland. They were pretty much airtight before this.
Unfortunately this blows from the perspective of my wardrobe... my Tim Hardaway jersey? In the closet (he he). Baron Davis Warriors throwback? Around here someplace, not on a hanger. And now my Arvydas jersey... think I'll have to bite the bullet and still rock that one.

You don't know what you're talking about. DM came to P-Town, kicked some azz, smoked some dope, harrassed some strippers, got a BIG contract and felt he was done, started under performing, got hurt, made a half azzed attempt to return, cried, whined, and faked his way into getting an INDEPENDENT doctor to say he had a career ending injury. How is that "HIS JOB"?
BTW The Blazer only said if they find out that a team signed DM for the purpose of screwing the Blazers they would seek legal retribution.

They couldn't finish the contract years? What are you talking about? you're a bigger d-a than the last guy. Who's the first person you ask if you think somebody can't play, multiple choice: 1) The player 2)The organization 3)The league 4) An independent doctor 5)Your mama. The obvious answer is (1). If the player says he can't play you can't make him. It's a well know fact that DM didn't want to play in Portland anymore, he said so much in multiple interviews. I just wish "THE CURSE" (DM) were picked up by a good team like Utah or Denver to better the Blazers chances of winning the division. Good luck with that Memphis.

Is it just me or does Miles have more of a case against the Blazers for threathening teams that might be interested in the lazy bum's services than Portland has against Memphis or whatever team would have signed him?
This has nothing to do with Miles whose career, immaturity and flaws are well chronicled.
I wouldnt want that poison around my team even if it costs 1$ to sign him.
This has everything to do about how Portlands screwed up.
I read two things in a Memphis paper which I found funny: Griz brass was particularly impressed with how Miles used his length and basketball IQ when defending Minnesotas Al Jefferson.
Basketball IQ? Darius Miles? Really?
Well, its IS the Grizzlies after all so we shouldnt be too surprised. " We were hearing a lot of rumblings and rumors that there were teams out there planning to sign Darius Miles specifically and maliciously to hurt our organization."
Since Portland team president Larry Miller seems to read a lot of online gossip and comments on blogs before he decides which move he will make, maybe we could start a rumour about Larry's brain being as small as his penis. After this idiotic stunt, people wouldnt be surprised that both are true.
Besides, cant wait for him to issue a memo or email loudly proclaiming that these online rumors are utterly false, the water was cold and there was lots of shrinkage.
Big up to Steve #7 for his explanation of the Gasol/Gasol trade.
The ignorant comment he countered is unfortunately the kind of stuff you hear way too much of online.
