Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Order is restored in international ball! (Sort of.) Here's what they're saying out in the ether about the United States 118-107 win over Spain in the gold-medal game on Sunday ...

Upside And Motor: "No one really knows at this point whether K will be back, or if it will be Pringles or McMillan stepping up to the plate in 2012. The team will likely look a lot different then (although could you really exclude LeBron, Wade, Howard, Williams, Paul, Bosh, or Anthony? They were all key cogs during this Olympic run, and can only get better in the foreseeable future. But regardless of who laces up and who paces the sidelines, there's no winning here. Not on this stage, not for this country, and not in this sport. How do you win in a world where there shouldn't be another option? If you win by just 15, it's not enough, and if you lose it's unforgivable, for certain. So if you're a fan of the "Redeem Team" moniker have no fear — it's only a matter of time before "REDEEM TEAM II" makes an appearance after the next inevitable defeat. And yet again you'll have a chance to relive our failures before the ship is hopefully righted."

Britt Robson, The Rake: "Comparisons to Michael Jordan have become hackneyed, not to mention unfair, for NBA players over the past decade — it is like anointing a singer-songwriter the next Dylan or a reggae artist the next Marley. But there is one trait Kobe possesses that involuntarily brings up memories of MJ — an almost maniacal need to be the straw that stirs the drink when the game is on the line. There are other sublime clutch shooters — Manu Ginobili comes to mind. But Ginobili — or Robert Horry, or even LeBron James — won't engage in a bloodthirsty fight to seize the right to be either hero or goat. (Yes, I know there have been times when Kobe has "disappeared" in big games. But even then, it seemed as if he was ostentatiously proving a point about his value to the team by withdrawing his aggression. Thankfully those days seem to be over.)

FreeDarko: "Congrats, D-Wade, you are officially on my unmitigated list of unmitigated love. I know, you were always deft and hell-raising, but in these Games you played like you wanted to scare people on the way to getting results, and occasionally bask in the terrific afterglow of your own menace. You were pissed that the NBA had forgotten you, pissed about the USA's need to prove itself, and no longer shackled by domestic partnership. I don't want to say that your 2006 ring didn't have a sense of purpose to it, but there's a huge difference between numb teleology and delighting in each step of the journey."

SLC Dunk: "According to my count, that's six gold medals for players while with the Jazz (2 each for Stockton and Malone and now 1 for Deron and Boozer). I believe that's the most for any NBA team. Granted, Boozer didn't see as much time as the other three, but a gold is still a gold."

Chris Bosh, The FanHouse: "It's finally over! And we did IT! Man! I've been dreaming about this since I first saw The Dream Team earn their medals back in 1992. I was only 8 years old, but I thought it was so cool and I wanted to be just like them. I always watched the Olympics as a little kid and it amazes me that I'm at this point where I am now. This has been the biggest accomplishment of my career so far. It's such a great feeling because we worked so hard for all of these years and it's paid off for us. We started this thing in 2006 with dreams of a Gold Medal in Beijing and now we're to that point. Time flies so fast and I'm definitely going to take in this moment. It seems like it was yesterday when we were at the World Championships getting a Bronze medal. Now we have something better and we can put that behind us."

Dime: "Why Spain lost: Defense. Team USA left the door wide open with some terrible defense in the first half that got only slightly better in the second half, and if Spain had been able to just get a few more stops, they could have been wearing the gold medals. We knew Spain, like every team, would have trouble keeping guys like Wade and Chris Paul and Kobe out of the lane, but leaving U.S. shooters wide open for some big threes in the fourth quarter was the ultimate downfall."

Nothin But BBall: "Dwayne Wade and Kobe, both NBA champions had their most amazing games of the Olympics. Kobe had been quiet throughout the game because of foul trouble ... until the 4th quarter. He had his hand in 15 straight points right after a timeout from Coach K. Wade just couldn’t be stopped. 27 points on layups, dunks, and ... jumpers? At one point, Wade was 7-7 from the field and didn’t seem like he would ever miss. Without these 2 stars, the gold most likely would have gone to Spain. For those who couldn’t stay awake to watch the game, search every inch of the internet and watch every highlight you can on YouTube."

As you can imagine, the Internets are very alive this morning. More USA gold 'net reaction on the way ...

Dear cousins in the USA. I have a question. Why is that the USA is the only country that has an Olympics medal table based on total medals, not gold medals won (the official Olympic method)? We all know that the USA is a great sporting nation, but came second in this year’s Olympics. It is small errors in judgment like this that do nothing to change the negative perception of the USA that many people have in Europe or other parts of the world. It would have been wiser to follow the official process like everyone else. If you want to go down this route, perhaps consider calculations based on GDP or population, in this case the USA, China and indeed Great Britain, would be near the bottom of the table. You did not win the Olympics, based on official figures, China did. But it is OK, and I still think New York is wonderful!

Pip...We keep track of total medals because we value the success of athletes on a variety of levels, not simply first-last. Silver and bronze medalists are still worthy of recognition and speak to the broad, overall skill of American Olympians.

Team USA played great. Shot much better in the last games, and they had too. Defense was very good, when it had to be. Great wins, great games, great final! Congrats, job wel done!

It's a two-way street Pip. Yes, one could say, well overall golds are more important. One could also say that method overlooks the fact that a country wasn't even good enough to finish third in other events.
My thing is, the Olympics didn't end up being about medal count. It was about a select few things: Phelps, Bolt, Basketball, the guy who threw his medal (and ended up having justification for doing so,) "legally aged" Chinese gymnasts, and poor Craig Sager's NBC-mandated wardrobe. Also about China burying its human-rights violations under a shiny coat of paint and money and most of the world's important voices just standing by and applauding it.

    (the official Olympic method)
There is no 'official' rank of country medal counts. US media has always ranked by total medal count.

Manu said that for any team to beat USA they would have to play the game of their lives, well Spain did and lost. Several guys had career games and still it was not enough. The game was always in danger of turning into a 30-point beat down but the shots would not stay down at the wrong moments. The Spanish team got away with some hacking that would have gotten you 5 to 10 for assault stateside but that is neither here nor there, we won.

Spain not play the game of their lives, Spain won the world championship final by 30. Sorry, this is a fact: Spain are close enough to US to give them a game. And if the FIBA travelling rule didn't be killed by the referees... well, let's see in two years.

It's not an excuse, i'm not saying that Spain could won the game only with fair referees. But the truth is there are a rule that it doesn´t aply on US games. A very important rule.

Kobe looked way more excited to win the gold metal than he did any of his three NBA titles.
I think he might be back in 2012, if he's healthy.

We will never see a team as great as the DREAM TEAM the rest are unfocused and weak and embarassed the US and to call this team REDEEM TEAM is a poor attempt at erasing the black eye we gave ourselves.

As for your comment about the medal count. According to your method of tabulating who the winner is in the Olympics only Gold medals count, 2nd and third place mean nothing. I beg to differ; in fact all the medals mean something, some a little more more than others. I think the best way to determine which country came out on top is to award 3 points for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze. This method will yield a more accurate assessment of who the "winner" is because it takes into account all of the medals. In this method, China would be on top with 223 points, and the USA would be a very close 2nd with 220 points.

Using the number of medals to judge how successful you are at the Games does not make a lot of sense to me. For example, winning a soccer or basketball or volleyball medal is worth a thousand times of winning medals in sports like diving, synchronized swimming, ... My suggestion is that they should multiply the medal in team sports with the number of players in the team. For example, winning soccer would give you 11 medals, basketball 5, volleyball 6, .... What do you guys think?

Hey Pip dont hate the players hate the Games. The US runs the Summer Olympics and always will how many of China's golds were legit. 10 yr old gymnastics girls winning Gold shouldn't count. And any medal count you see on the internet is total medals not golds guy, otherwise there would be no point in giving out silver and bronze. So, if your trying to take a shot at the US nice try we own all major sports in the World besides soccer and people in the states could care less about soccer. Keep trying to hate on the US people all it does is motivate our athletes ex. MICHAEL PHELPS no other athlete will ever do what he did THANK U Ian Thorpe for motivating him even more 7wrs 8golds 1or. Better luck in 4 years PIP sorry if were too good for your country when it comes to SPORTS.

If they added gold medals per team there is no country that comes close to competing with the UNITED STATES what so ever. We win almost every major team sport there is or at least medal. US basketball will not lose for a long time I truly believe that, and KOBE BRON DWADE MELO CP3 DWILL DHOWARD will all be back in 2012 I gurantee it and we will win GOLD again as long as KOBE is putting on a USA jersey just look at how he took over the 4th without him USA loses that game. Thank God for the greatest player in the world showing up!!!

Because we value every medal? Really?
My thinking is this: In most sports, the difference between 1st and 3rd is small. Therefore, in my own personal opinion, I care more about the total medals than total golds because the differences are small.

Spain shot incredible but 9 times out of 10 would have lost this game by 30 or more just as they did in the earlier rounds. To all of you haters out there who said USA doesn't have a chance with only 3 big guys and that their terrible 3PG and free throws would lead to their downfall, I hope you watched that last game. Spain hit every garbage shot they put up and the US still pulled away in the end. No team in the world will beat a team that has Lebron, Kobe, and Wade. I hope all of you non USA supporters who were talking all that trash were silenced by Kobe. Gold baby!
