Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Via ClutchFans, here's video of last night's shoving match. As you'll see, Suns forward Matt Barnes starts it up by popping Rockets guard Rafer Alston in the grill, and all the big names — Tracy McGrady, Steve Nash, Yao Ming, Shaquille O'Neal — get involved from there.

After coaches and officials separated the gang, the referees huddled and decided to eject Alston and Barnes with double technicals. McGrady, Nash and O’Neal all drew technical fouls. Here's what they're saying out in the ether about the mess ...

Dime: "Replace the key participants with some other players around the League, or replace the two teams altogether, and last night’s Rockets/Suns 'brawl' could have been much, much worse. [...] We heard Ron Artest was gonna get involved, but the chip David Stern had implanted in 2004 activated and temporarily paralyzed him. (The same thing happened when Stephen Jackson was watching the fight on TV and started to jump up off the couch.) Put the blame on Barnes for this one."

FanHouse: "Matt Barnes talked about what happened and why he got things started by making sure he fought extra-hard through that screen. 'I tried to get through a screen, and I guess I was too rough for him, so he tried to retaliate,' Barnes said. 'It was just a bunch of pushing, I didn't think anyone should have gotten thrown out because there were no punches thrown. But the refs did what they thought was necessary.' When asked if that might have been retaliation for a hard screen the Rockets gave to Steve Nash, Barnes didn't say anything that would contradict that assertion. 'Yeah, they hit us with a couple of hard screens, so ... they're not going to screen me hard, so I ran through a screen, and he didn't like it,' Barnes said."

ClutchFans: "Steve Nash came flying in towards Rafer, and Tracy McGrady stopped him then threw him like a rag doll to the floor. Shaquille O'Neal entered the picture to play 'peacemaker' (cough) by McGrady, Yao and Rafer from behind. I love too how Suns coach Terry Porter isn't seen running over until Nash falls down. You can imagine what's going through his head ... 'Barnes? Meh. Wait, Nash?! Get in there!'"

With Leather: "A lot of people are crediting the coaches and refs for keeping this under control, but I’d like to think that the soothing influence of Ron Artest had something to do with it as well."

Bright Side of the Sun: "I understand Barnes and Alston getting the boot. I also understand Nash and Shaq receiving the technicals. What I don't understand is, after throwing Nash to the floor, how T-Mac escaped with merely a technical foul. He seemed to be doing the most shoving of anyone on the floor. Maybe it's just me, or did anyone else think T-Mac should have gotten the boot as well?"

Dream Shake: "Word of the Day: goon."

Yes... as was noted in reviews of his SF Pro-Am league play last summer, Barnes is a punk. When his shot isn't falling, which is basically all the time, that's his entire game.
What was that ref looking at when Barnes drilled Rafer though (who responded in a fairly mellow fashion for a former Fresno St. Bulldog)? Whole thing coulda been averted by a whistle had the ref not been looking at ta-tas in the stands.

Mac the boot? He tries to restrain Rafer along Yao and then Nash comes crashing in, what should he do? Let Nash get on Rafer's throat? No, push him aside so he doesn't heat it up again. That Nash dropped like flip flops on the beach was just a matter of size and weight difference. And of Mac being a little upset about Nash coming in when Rafer is already being brought to peace by two teammates. Give Nash the boot and Shaq for aggravating the whole scene again with his pushing. There you go. Just my 2 cents not worth a penny.

And by the way, if you look closely enough, you'll see that Nash's being pulled backwards by the ref. So he drops because he's being push-pulled and can't control that (now, how???) not because Mac shoves him to the ground intentionally.

Yeah Nash deserves no sympathy, and I'm a big fan. They're crying about TMac's pick on him today, which was nothing. Almost looked like Nash was kinda flopping the way he reacted to that. And then he comes running in to the beef and makes it worse... I don't think TMac was out of line at all.
Nash occasionally seems a little too eager to mix it up. We know you got heart dude but c'mon...

This would've been over if Nash didn't rush into the middle. Both Yao and T-Mac were pull Alston back. I swear though, I think some teams are going to try and mix it up with Houston just to try and get Artest to bite. I can almost guarantee this will happen come playoff time.

I hate how ESPN, and now everyone, have made this about TMac's screen on Nash the play before. The guys calling the game didn't even MENTION it at all, instead they mentioned what really truly sparked it, Barnes' forearm shot and the ref not calling it.
And Nash flopped on TMac's shove. Notice how no one went flailing around like Manu when Shaq shoved them, they simply fell down.

LMAO!!!!! @ Ty......waiting to see Jermaine O'Neal fly in from the side of the camera with a sliding punch..HAHAHA!
Steve Nash is punk and it looked like more than anything he ran into them to act all tough and bounced off them with his little weak body. Then the A$$HOLE know as Shaq (dont even get me started on him, cuz wha kinda player tells his coach and organization that he is only targeting 60 games and the rest u can forget about) he comes in and jus starts pushing anything wearing a rockets jersey.
oh and Barnes is a punk with no game

That was right after he'd already thrown McGrady and Yao down to the ground... hahaha.

i think in these situations they should pull out the octogon at halftime and settle it.
It would be a great half time show.
I'm sure it's tough being a Houston fan, i couldnt imagine what it would be like to actually play for them!!
    THUGS.

But that gave aaron brooks more playing time. I'm into it.
